Pros & Cons

Pros
- Looks absolutely stunning in the metal, much better proportioned than its rivals. The lighting sequence when you approach and walk away is both fascinatingly cool as well as advance technology
- Plenty of grunt from the turbocharged V6 engine and the stability from quattro all-wheel drive
- Fully digitalized interior with touch screen control

Cons
- Constrained after-sales support, even if you reside in the Klang Valley as the brand only effective has four large 3S centres (two in Klang Valley, one each in Penang and Johor)
- While it has two large screens as interface, the dashboard design is slanted towards function over form, thus not as visually appealing as Mercedes-Benz CLS 450
- The 48-volt mild-hybrid system focuses on fuel-saving through a lengthened idling start-stop phase rather than boosting acceleration through electric torque assist

Overview
Audi A7 Sportback – Overview
Audi Malaysia, now under the supervision of the brand’s office located in Singapore, has introduced a range of new models in Malaysia. Apart from the Q models, the beautiful, emotionally-driven Sportback models have also arrived.
Although an incredibly niche sub-segment, the Audi A7 has competition from the Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 and the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI Quattro is priced from RM641,900.
Exterior
Audi A7 Sportback – Exterior
The Audi A7 Sportback is positioned between the A6 and A8 limousine, for C-suite executives who want a sporty looking yet practical (and comfortable) four-door sedan with the silhouette of a coupe. The Mercedes-Benz CLS started this sub-segment with the 2005 CLS-class.
A key design element that all vehicles in this segment have are the frameless windows. The Audi A7 Sportback adds more sporty styling with its short decklid that also hides a speed-activated spoiler. With that, the large tailgate makes this a five-door coupe that the designers boldly mentioned of practicality like a station wagon.
Length | 4,969 mm |
Width | 1,908 mm |
Height | 1,422 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,926 mm |
One key technology that Audi emphasized a lot is lighting technology. The Audi A7 Sportback comes fitted with HD Matrix LED headlamps with dynamic indicators front and rear. The tail lamps will perform a futuristic coming-home and leaving-home function light animation that makes leaving and arriving a fascinating experience.
The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI Quattro in Malaysia is equipped with the S Line exterior package with sportier-looking bumpers, side skirts and 20-inch wheels in matt titanium finish, wrapped with 255/40R20 tyres.
A panoramic glass sunroof makes the Audi A7 even sleeker thanks to the two-tone look from the glass roof.
Soft-closing doors are standard in the Audi A7 Sportback with the tailgate equipped with a handsfree opening function.
Interior
Audi A7 Sportback – Interior
Inside, the Audi A7 Sportback is fitted with Audi’s latest concept of digitalization. There is the usual Audi Virtual Cockpit in HD resolution measuring 12.3 inches ahead of the driver, a head-up display as well as MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch response.
Valcona leather covers the seating material, while the dashboard and door panels are fitted with aluminium inlays. Customisable ambient lighting provides soft lighting at the doors, footwell as well as the centre console.
Audi says the boot of the A7 Sportback has 535 litres of storage, with a wide opening for easy placement of two golf bags.
Features

A four-zone automatic air-conditioning system also keeps individuals comfortable, with the rear occupants having glaring sunlight cut-out thanks to sunshades as well as heat-reducing insulated glass.
Operating buttons are in black glass-look with haptic feedback and extended aluminium look.
As expected in this segment of vehicles, the seats are fully power-adjustable with lumbar support and memory function extended to the steering column position too.
Safety
The Audi A7 Sportback comes with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) under the Audi Pre-Sense Front branding and lane departure warning. Cruise control is only limited to the traditional non-adaptive type of operation.
The rear cross-traffic alert meanwhile provides an additional door exit warning system, which warns the occupants if they are opening the door into traffic. As for parking assistance, the Audi A7 Sportback is equipped with 360-degree parking cameras and all-around sensors.
Infotainment
The Audi A7 Sportback comes with a dual-display setup dubbed the MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch response. The upper screen measures 10.1 inches, while the lower screen is 8.6 inches, both displays can be operated via touch and haptic feedback, like our smartphones.
Audiophiles will be pleasantly entertained via the 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 3D sound.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connection is also standard in the Audi A7 Sportback.
Powertrain
Audi A7 Sportback – Powertrain
Engine
The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI Quattro is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine developing 340 PS @ 5,000-6,400 rpm and 500 Nm @ 1,370-4,500 rpm. There is also a 48-volt mild hybrid system (MHEV) attached to the powertrain.
A belt alternator generator (BAS) connected to the crankshaft can recuperate up to 12 kW of power, with the energy stored in a compact lithium-ion battery.
The Audi A7 Sportback can coast with the engine off over a wide speed range and then restart smoothly via the BAS. All the operation is transparent and invisible to the driver and occupants.
Transmission
A seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission is paired to the 340 PS V6 engine. Quattro ultra sends power to the four wheels but only when the computer dictates. Shift paddles are found on the steering wheel, accompanied by an exquisitely crafted shift lever.
Chassis
Similar to other Audi models, the front and rear suspension consist of the five-link arrangement with many of the suspension arms and components made of lightweight aluminium. The suspension profile is electronically adjustable via the Audi Drive Select feature, adjusting to road conditions automatically.
Drivetrain
The Audi A7 Sportback is fitted with Audi’s latest Quattro “ultra technology”. The drivetrain is highly efficient, as it only activates the rear wheel drive when needed with multi-plate clutches. This means the Audi A7 Sportback is primarily a front-wheel drive car especially in Efficiency and Comfort driving modes. Audi says there are no differences in terms of traction and handling compared to permanent systems.
Driving Performance
Audi A7 Sportback – Driving Performance
The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0TFSI Quattro with 340 PS and 500 Nm of torque can accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h.
Drivers can customize the steering, transmission and engine response as well as suspension setting in the Audi Drive Select mode. An Individual profile also allows personalized preference of each parameter, allowing for comfort suspension with high response powertrain that is ideal for our less-than-perfect road conditions.
Other driving modes are Dynamic and Auto, with the former similar to a Sport mode and Auto being in between sport and comfort modes.
The mild-hybrid is designed to recuperate energy to extend the idling start-stop (powering systems such as steering and transmission oil pump), rather than deploy an “electrical motor boost” seen in the Mercedes-Benz operation.
Ride Comfort
Audi A7 Sportback – Ride Comfort
Targeted as a sporty coupe, the ride is definitely on the firm setting. However, electronically controlled suspension damping, the ride automatically smoothes out. Ride comfort is impressive given the large 20-inch wheel size with 40-series tyres.
Wind noise is also minimal, as Audi spent plenty of time in the wind tunnel to minimize all sorts of noises. The sealing concept for the doors and the rear hatch is sophisticated.
Conclusion
Audi A7 Sportback – Conclusion
The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0TFSI Quattro is well spec given its sporty nature. It has all the proper firepower and looks to compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS 450. However, the Audi brand in Malaysia is not as strong as it used to be due to various factors.
