Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Reviews

Overview

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Overview

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is the first four-seater in the Italian marque to be fitted with Ferrari’s twin turbocharged V8 engine, the same power unit featured also on the Ferrari Portofino and the Ferrari Roma. Officially introduced in 2016, just a year after the naturally aspirated V12 powered four-wheel-drive Ferrari GTC4Lusso, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is the rear-wheel-drive only version of the 3-door grand tourer. Like the Ferrari FF which it replaces, it is sporting a shooting-brake layout with coupΓ© body style up front and an estate style rear end at the back.

Though equipped with four less cylinders, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is in fact more torquey than the V12 variant, albeit with less horsepower. And while it is missing out on Ferrari’s proprietary four-wheel-drive-system, the four-wheel-steering system from the V12 variant is retained, with the added advantage of less weight. Like its predecessor, the GTC4Lusso T is a 4-seater grand tourer with 2 proper rear seats, evident by its nearly 5-metre-long body.

The Bentley Continental GT and the Maserati GranTurismo are perhaps the closest natural rival to the Ferrari, but neither offer the same versatility and practicality as the Ferrari does, one thing that you might not hear very often. With a price tag of RM1.09 million at launch (excluding duties and options), it is priced similarly to the Ferrari’s own mid-engine 488 GTB.

Exterior

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Design

Like the Ferrari FF, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T showcases Ferrari’s take on the unique shooting-brake coupΓ© body style, reinterpreting the concept with a streamlined, tapered shape that gives it an almost fastback-like silhouette. It is virtually identical on the exterior compared to its V12 powered twin.

Sporting a similarly chiseled front-end as the Ferrari Portofino, the GTC4Lusso T wider horizontal front grille accentuates the width of the car. Thin vertical slats outboard of the headlights channel air through the front wheel wells, channeling pressure out from the wheel spokes and reducing drag.

Long sculpted bonnet and pronounced front wheel arches gives the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T its classic coupΓ©-like proportion and a commanding road presence. The aerodynamic air vents along the sides of the front fenders are reminiscent of the gills of a bull shark.

Perhaps the biggest difference compared to the Ferrari FF is at the rear, which incorporate a more sharply creased body panels and a twin circular taillight design. The lines along the flanks are more clearly defined and the rear roof also dips lower in back.

The roof-mounted rear spoiler and the triple-fence diffuser work with other aerodynamic components, like the aforementioned front fender air vents and the integrated grille air intakes to improve airflow and aerodynamic performance.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Dimension

The Ferrari GTCA4Lusso T is identical in terms of its external dimension compared to the naturally aspirated version. It measures 15 mm longer, 27 mm wider and 4 mm taller than the Ferrari FF. At nearly 5 metres long, it is easily the longest series production Ferrari on sale today.

Interior

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Interior

Inside, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T features a unique dual cockpit architecture, seen also on the Ferrari Portofino but with few subtle differences. Your passenger essentially acts as your co-pilot. Equipped with the optional 8.8-inch multifunction touchscreen, the front passenger is able to perform an array of function which includes setting up the navigation system.

It is a familiar Ferrari cabin but with particular attention given to the onboard luxury and creature comfort. The driver-oriented dashboard design features highly modernized infotainment system which includes a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen display. Fine Italian leather covers almost every surface that is not carbon fibre or brushed metal.

Behind the button-laden Formula One-style steering wheel and the over-sized column mounted paddle shifters is a classic Ferrari yellow-faced central tachometer that redlines at 7,500 RPM, flanked by a pair of configurable multi-info digital screens.

Ferrari has managed to carve out more legroom compared to the Ferrari FF at the back despite sharing an identical wheelbase. Two normal sized adults fit in comfortably at the rear seats with a decent view out. The seatbacks fold to expand the cargo hold of 450 litres, which is accessible via the wide and practical hatchback opening.

Features

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Features

The Formula One-style multifunction steering wheel is adorned with all manner of controls, including turn signals control on the spokes, the cherry-red ignition button, wiper switch, and the iconic manettino switch. Optional LED shift indicator at the top of the rim illuminate as you approach redline.

A centrally mounted 10.25-inch full HD capacitive touchscreen and two five-inch TFT VGA displays in the instrument cluster are standard items. Apple CarPlay functionality on the other hand is available as an option. The optional 8.8-inch secondary touchscreen display offer a co-pilot experience which not only displays the car’s performance statistics and status but can also be used to interact with the onboard system.

Technical highlight includes E-Diff, F1-Trac, SCM and ESC that has been specifically calibrated to boost responsiveness. The 4RM-S rear-wheel steering system, which is integrated with Side Slip Control (SSC3), makes for more rapid response to steering wheel inputs when introduced to a corner. Highly sophisticated magnetorheological dampers greatly improve handling as well as ride quality.

Driving Performance

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Driving Performance

Engine

Powering the rear wheels is Ferrari’s award-winning 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that churns out 610 PS at 7,500 RPM and peak torque of 760 Nm from 3,000 RPM. 0-100 km/h is dealt with in 3.5 seconds, before reaching a top speed of a mind bending 320 km/h. In a four-seater no less.

Codenamed the F154, the V8 engine is derived from the same engine family that was named the 2016 International Engine of the Year. The compact yet highly efficient power unit produces the highest specific power output of the category at 158 PS/L. In comparison, the 6.3 litre naturally aspirated V12 variant produces 689 PS at 8,000 rpm and 697 Nm at 5,750 rpm.

Clever engine control software known as the Variable Boost Management (VBM) modulates torque delivery to suit the selected gear, delivering linear yet punchy performance with immediate throttle response and virtually zero turbo lag. Thanks to variable torque curves between 3rd and 7th gear, longitudinal acceleration is consistent through the ratios.

Transmission

The engine is mated to the same Ferrari’s 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission found on the Ferrari Portofino. The linear characteristic of the power delivery from the engine has allowed Ferrari to adopt longer gear ratios to the benefit of fuel consumption. In fact, it is 30 percent more efficient than the V12 model.

Integration of F1-Trac and electronic differential (E-Diff) optimizes traction and torque delivery to the outside and inside rear wheels depending on the five manettino switch position (Ice, Wet, comfort, sport, ESC Off).

Ride Comfort

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Ride Comfort

The highly sophisticated magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) has been uprated with dual-coil technology, which helps reduce roll while improving absorption of road imperfections. The result is a more dynamic, responsive car that also delivers superior comfort.

Fuel Consumption

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption is rated at 12.9 L/100 Km on a combined cycle.

Conclusion

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Conclusion

There is nothing else on the road quite like the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T. No other carmaker has come close to making a car that can be considered as its direct rival. It is effortlessly competent and yet surprisingly accommodating on the inside. But one can’t help but think that the Ferrari GTC4Lusso is the answer to a question that no one really ask. Nevertheless, it is still a very special car, one that delivers driving experience like no other 4-seater.
