    2021 Hyundai Veloster Overview

    Hyundai Veloster Overview

The Hyundai Veloster is the South Korean automaker’s attempt at a sporty coupé, featuring a unique asymmetrical door configuration, with one door on the driver side and two on the passenger side. It made its Malaysian debut back in 2012 with the facelifted model subsequently introduced three years later with an updated 1.6 L turbocharged powertrain.

The facelifted first-generation Hyundai Veloster is available in two trim levels- Turbo and the Turbo Sport variants. Price starts from RM 148,119 when new and are imported directly from South Korea.

Sitting in an incredibly niche subsegment, like-for-like, there aren’t many natural rivals that compete against the Hyundai Veloster. Although bearing a striking resemblance to the sporty Renault Megane RS Coupé, the Hyundai Veloster is more comparable to rivals like the Kia Cerato Koup and perhaps the slightly more premium Volkswagen Scirocco.

    Must Read

    1. Unique Styling- Not your typical Hyundai. With a sporty and aggressive exterior combined with a unique coupé layout featuring asymmetry door configuration, you will no doubt stand out in the crowd.
    2. Large Boot Space- Surprisingly large boot space of 440 litre is enough to put the supposedly more practical Volkswagen Golf hatchback to shame.
    3. Performance- The 1.6 litre turbocharged engine is a welcoming addition to the lineup, replacing the outgoing underpowered naturaly aspirated engine that simply does not live up to the sporty exterior of the car.
    1. Ride and Handling- Torsion beam rear suspension system is partly to blame for the less than desirable ride quality on board. The car lacks sophistication that most of its European or in fact Japanese rivals have when it comes to dealing with corners and road imperfections.
    2. Practicality- The rear passenger headroom is hugely compromised due to the slopping roof line. Rear passenger’s head is effectively right underneath the rear hatch and there is in fact a warning label reminding people of possible contact when closing.
    3. ADAS- Total lack of proactive safety systems like Blind Spot Monitoring or Lane Departure Warning at this price point is not typical of South Korean car which usually comes loaded with more features compared to its rivals.
