    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Overview

The Lamborghini Aventador is the icon of the Italian supercar brand. An icon of excess and extravagance. Aggressive styling with a ferocious sounding 6.5-litre V12 engine mixed with a substantial price tag.
The Lamborghini Aventador range that debuted in 2011 will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, with the company celebrating its 10,000th unit built in September 2020.
In this segment of ultra-luxurious vehicles, final prices are never fixed as there is a high degree of personalisation involved, as well as the place of registration (duty-free zones such as Langkawi). As such, the price is on application or P.O.A. Nonetheless, the basic starting price of the Lamborghini Aventador S started at RM1,500,000 before duties, taxes and optional equipment.
There are two main variants of the Aventador- the S or track-focused SVJ that are then offered in either coupe or roadster body styles. Other limited-production models include the SV and the anniversary editions.
Traditional competitors meanwhile are the Ferrari 812 Superfast and the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera.
Compared to the entry-level Lamborghini Urus, the Aventador is close to double in pricing and four times rarer, as the company only builds just over a thousand units every year.

  • Exterior

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Exterior

The styling of the Aventador is an extreme evolution of the 1 million Euro Reventon. Many of the sharp, technical edges from fighter jets applied to these pairs are now common styling themes that are also seen in the Lamborghini Urus SUV.
Similar to the flagship V12 Lamborghini models of the past, the doors on the Aventador open upwards, exposing a new carbon-fibre central monocoque, with the roof, occupant cell and tub as one single component.

The front and rear frames are made with aluminium and then bolted directly to the monocoque, providing excellent rigidity and ultra-lightweight. The multi-plane see-through engine cover is an optional item, so are the carbon-fibre panels and braces in the engine bay.

For the track-special SVJ model (Superveloce Jota), aerodynamic efficiency and performance are the key upgrades. It features active aerodynamic flaps and wings called Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA).
The ALA controls various intake and outlets to strategically channel air over the body of the Aventador for an increase of 70% more downforce over the SV variant. A large rear wing and diffuser further contribute to the increased rear downforce levels in the SVJ variant.
Wheel sizes are 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear, with the rear tyres measuring 100 mm wider than the front items at 355/25 sections. The SVJ variant features lightweight wheels and specially developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.
To identify the Aventador LP-400 and newer S variants, the centrally mounted exhaust tips on the former is a one-piece outlet while the latter changed to a three-outlet design. It is easy to spot the SVJ thanks to the giant rear wing, aggressive side skirts, multi-element front bumper and a high-mounted dual-outlet exhaust muffler.

  • Interior

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Interior

The doors of the Lamborghini Aventador open upwards, a function only found in flagship Lamborghini models to this day. Inside the carbon fibre tub are just two seats and the dashboard.
There isn't much space as well as features in the interior. The instrument display is fully digital and the graphics change according to the selected driving mode. An infotainment screen is placed below the central air conditioning vent, followed by the control switches.
The jet fighter theme from the exterior also flowed into the interior, with the engine start-stop switch protected by a red cover as seen in jets.
Plenty of personalisation is available for the interior with a broad range of colours and materials that covers every square inch of the Aventador.

  • Features

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Features

When it comes to features in a Lamborghini Aventador, it is limited to the centre console, where, as mentioned earlier, a red flap covers the start/stop switch similar to a jet fighter. The drive mode selector reflects the model’s decade-old interior, with the switches and displays coming from Audi models of the late 2000s.
Selecting the Strada, Sport or Corsa modes is with a rather primitive directional arrow switch. The Ego mode, or personal/self, introduced from the 2016 Aventador S model allows the driver to configure the powertrain, suspension and steering characteristics to his or her own liking.
As the Lamborghini Aventador is extremely low, the driver can engage lift-mode from the dashboard, with the front axle increasing 40 mm in height to clear speed humps and traverse rough roads without touching the underbody.
    Safety
Reverse sensors and parking camera are optional items in the Lamborghini Aventador. The vehicle also comes equipped with six airbags including front knee airbags.
    Infotainment
The Lamborghini Aventador is fitted with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. Owners can specify a telemetry system that enhances the screen to display various information while driving on a circuit.
The standard audio system plays audio through four speakers. A premium audio option with power amplifier is also available.

  • Powertrain

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Powertrain

    Engine

The engine takes all the attention in the Lamborghini Aventador. Twelve cylinders arranged in a V-formation with a combined displacement of 6.5 litres. When it debuted, the engine delivered 700 PS at 8,250 rpm and 690 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The Aventador S arrived with a raft of changes and saw the power output increased to 740 PS while the peak torque remained. The engine also spins to 8,500 rpm.
Lamborghini kept a lot in reserve for the planned SVJ variant. The 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine now spins to 8,700 rpm, with maximum outputs of 770 PS and 720 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful series-production Lamborghini V12 engine to date.
While on paper it is the similar output as a Ferrari 488 Pista, experiencing the engine raise in revolutions is a very different sensation. The V12 engine provides such an occasion behind, literally singing unrestricted to 8,500 rpm.

    Transmission

The Lamborghini Aventador has a seven-speed single-clutch automated transmission featuring the Lamborghini ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) mechanism. Lamborghini specifically wanted an emotional shifting experience plus the benefit of a lighter weight compared to dual-clutch layouts.
The ISR system independently disengages and engages the current and next gear with independent rods rather than the same, hence the name. This means the transition of two gears can run in parallel, aiding to fast shift times.
However, for many, it is still too much drama, with shift-shock at low speeds that require gentle lifting of the throttle to smoothen the gear shifting.
No changes were made to the gear ratios of the SVJ unit to take advantage of the higher horsepower and torque values.

    Chassis

Thanks to use of lightweight materials, the Lamborghini Aventador S has a kerb weight of 1,575 kg, with the track-focused SVJ 50 kg lighter.
The suspension system features pushrod arrangement that is inspired by top tier motorsports categories such as Formula 1 and Le Mans Prototype (LMP1) racing. In this layout, the coil spring and shock absorber unit are mounted inboard, on the chassis monocoque in a near-horizontal position.
This allows much better movement of the double-wishbone arms as well as the packaging of the shock absorber unit, translating to race-car like steering precision and grip levels.
The addition of rear-wheel steering came with the introduction of the Aventador S, rotating as much as three degrees in either direction according to the speed. Coupled with the variable-ratio front steering rack, the Lamborghini corners with incredible precision, and its profile can be altered in the Ego drive mode.
Significant changes were made to the dynamic stability control unit moving from the Aventador LP700-4 to the Aventador S, making it handle a lot better and sharper.
In the Aventador SVJ where the key is increasing mechanical grip, the suspension, steering and 4WD settings have been altered accordingly with the additional aerodynamic downforce.

    Drivetrain

Power from the V12 engine is split to the front and rear in a standard 40-60 torque bias. The Haldex Gen 5 system adjusts the torque to the front wheels according to the drive mode. Strada sets it at a comfortable 40-60 split, while Sport pushes up to 90% to the rear.
Corsa mode is more suitable for the race track, where suspension is stiffened up and the traction control does not intervene as much and the 4WD system sets to a 20-80 front-to-rear torque split.

  • Driving Performance

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Driving Performance

The Lamborghini Aventador SV coupe lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 44.97 seconds (20.6 km measurement), a record back in 2018. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in late 2020 has however knocked just 1.354 seconds off the lap time to claim the current record holder for series production vehicle.
With 770 PS and 720 Nm of torque in the Aventador SVJ, it can complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 2.8 seconds, hitting 200 km/h in 8.6 seconds. The top speed is reported to be 350 km/h. This is complemented by a braking performance of stopping from 100 km/h to 0 in 30 metres.
With active aerodynamics, harder suspension setting as well as stickier tyres, the Aventador SVJ carries much more speed in the corners, something only committed and talented drivers should be allowed to access, as the grip limits are much higher than ever.

  • Ride Comfort

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Ride Comfort

Visibility out of the low and expansive windscreen is something out of the ordinary. However, with so many higher SUVs and generally larger vehicles on the roads these days, driving the Aventador in the city can be quite stressful, due to the limited visibility ahead and behind.
The suspension when set to Strada mode is just acceptable, given the chassis has to handle so much power and after all, this is not a car for daily commute. The Lamborghini Urus SUV is the daily commute for the owner of a garage full of raging bulls and prancing horses.

  • Fuel Consumption

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Fuel Economy

The large naturally aspirated V12 engine returns an official fuel consumption figure of 16.9 litres per 100 km (7.8 km/L).

  • Conclusion

    LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR – Conclusion

The Lamborghini Aventador is at its last legs of extreme driving and driver involvement. Lamborghini has announced that their new generation products will feature electrification and fully electric can be seen as soon as 2030.
The Lamborghini Aventador shouts about everything and anything, so it is definitely not for the introvert and dislikes random waves, thumb-ups and photo requests. The Aventador also significantly changed the brand in making great driving machines, with the Aventador S handling magnificently and the SVJ setting a record at the Green Hell.
Thanks to the aggressive and distinctive styling, it is still the icon of excess, attraction and that is the reason you show off with a Lamborghini.
