Mazda dealers in Japan are now accepting pre-orders for the rotary-powered range-extended Mazda MX-30 Rotary EV. Unlike the battery-only MX-30 EV that we have here, this new MX-30 Rotary EV adds a small, lightweight 830cc rotary engine for use as a back-up generator. It’s technically a series-type plug-in hybrid, with a 17.8 kWh battery (~half of the MX-30 EV’s 35.5 kWh). • After 11 years, Mazda restarts production of rotary engines, for Mazda MX-30 R-EV

Eleven years after the Mazda RX-8 was discontinued in June 2012, the company has re-started production of rotary engines. Of course, this is 2023 and thirsty rotary engines have no place in today’s strictly regulation automotive industry. Clearly Mazda’s latest rotary engine can’t be anything like the two-rotor Renesis 13B 1.3-litre engine used in the RX-8. Instead, Mazda’s latest rotary engine is a single rotor 830cc that makes just 76 PS. It’s not much but it’s good enough because the tiny eng

  • Mazda's new rotary engine to debut this week but don't expect the MX-30 REEV to brap brap around

Beggars can’t be choosers but the vagrants camped outside Hiroshima waiting for Mazda to throw us a rotary-shaped bone have finally gotten a bite of something as news emerged about the debatable Mazda MX-30 receiving a rotary engine as a range extended electric vehicle (REEV). Told you not to be choosy.
