    Mazda MX-30 – Overview

Though this is not the first time Mazda has flirted with full electric vehicles, the Mazda MX-30 is the first actual production EV from the carmaker. For such a significant car, the marque has wisely chosen to make an EV in the crossover segment.

However, Mazda has decided to stay away from any nomenclature that will connect the Mazda MX-30 to its electric underpinnings. There’s no ‘e’ anywhere in its name, and even the MX brings performance to mind, unlike the other SUVs and crossovers in their stable with the CX moniker.

The Mazda MX-30 has the same dimensions as the more-familiar Mazda CX-30 and in fact the EV is built on the same SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture found under the Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-30. Reinforcements have been performed on the cells and the floor too to increase stiffness, due to the added weight of the cells.

Aside from its electrified drivetrain, one of the other interesting bits about the Mazda MX-30 is its freestyle doors with the rear doors hinged at the rear, which brings the Mazda RX-8 immediately to mind. A future plug-in hybrid of the electric crossover will feature a rotary engine to extend range, but no exact date has been given on this variant.

According to a report by AmInvestment bank, the Mazda MX-30 is due to arrive in Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2021. There’s also a chance the EV will be part of Mazda’s CKD line-up in Malaysia, which will then bring its price point to a reasonable level.

  • Exterior

    Mazda MX-30 – Exterior

As mentionend, size-wise there is nothing between the Mazda CX-30 and the Mazda MX-30. The electric crossover has the roofline of coupe, and while the rear of the car is familiar, the front of the EV is not. In place of the large, gaping grille of Mazda’s SUVs, the Mazda CX-30 has a narrower grille across the top, with a strangely prominent middle section.

The lower bumper is finished in a dark gray, and it wraps around the entirety of the car in Mazda’s normal fashion.
The normal range of colours are available to the Mazda MX-30, and the roof has been finished in a glossy black hue, while the A and C-pillars are lightly contrasted lightly in grey colour.

  • Interior

    Mazda MX-30 – Interior

If the exterior of the car – with the black accents and such – does not proclaim its green credentials, the interior of the Mazda MX-30 certainly does so. The centre console is trimmed with cork, which is a cheeky nod to the fact that the marque started out making cork 100 years ago.

The material can be harvested without damaging the tree, so the plant is not harm in the production. Door trim uses fibres from recycled plastic bottles, and cork can be found at the door handles too. Interior room is adequate, although not remarkable and taller occupants will complain when seated at the rear.

However, its voluminous boot, at 341 litres under the cover, does compensate for the lack a little bit and will take in pushchairs and buggies. Seating position is high for the front occupants, as is should in a crossover, and the small platform rising from the centre in a sea of cork is an interesting bit of design inside here.

A chunky shift lever sits on the platform, and instruments here are pleasingly simple. It’s really easy to over-design the inputs into haptic-everything in a futuristic green car like the Mazda MX-30, but the engineers have thankfully decided to keep it simple here.

Buttons that need to be physical are actually so, but strangely the screen for infotainment does not register touch. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are compatible, but utilising a rotary dial to interface with it feels wrong somehow. However, the screen that controls climate is a touchscreen, which is altogether a little befuddling to be honest.

Perhaps the reason for the lack of touch-capability for the infotainment screen is due to its distance from the front occupants. Be that as it may, this spce is still an excellent example of Mazda’s interior design as it is easy to understand and oozes class.

  • Features

    Mazda MX-30 – Features

Are freestyle doors a feature? If so, then chalk it up. Models in most markets will receive a powered sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, as well as the aforementioned dual screens. The floating screen in the dash handles infotainment via rotary dials, while the one below handles climate via touch.

We would have much preferred them in reverse. The infotainment system was first seen in the new Mazda 3, and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.A full suite of safety equipment is pretty much expected in new cars today, but the Mazda MX-30 also comes with the latest ADAS from the marque.

Mazda calls the collection i-Activsense, and systems standard in the collection is automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Powertrain

    Mazda MX-30 – Powertrain

The electric motor is capable of 143 PS (105 kw) and 265 Nm of torque, and all of that goes only to the front wheels. Battery is rated at 30 kWh, and with a 6.6 kW AC charger in the Type 2 charge port, it takes 5 1/2 hours to give the give the EV a 170 km mileage. With a 37 kW DC charger in the fastcharge CCS port, 39 minutes will give 109 km. Finally, maximum range is rated at 170 km. Consumption is rated at 176 Wh/km, which equates to 2.0 l/100km.

  • Driving Performance

    Mazda MX-30 – Driving Performance

The century sprint is unimpressive at 9.7 seconds, but in the world of EVs, the Mazda MX-30 is one of the sweeter cars to drive. It’s not the usual sparkle of the Mazda CX-5 or the Mazda 3, but even so Mazda’s only full electric offering is a leader in this category in the world of EVs.

The steering is precise and feels natural in the familiar manner of a Mazda, with just the right amount of feedback getting to the driver. This keeps the driver involved, and the helpful torque vectoring system keeps the crossover planted during most situations. It also helps that the bank of batteries is small, and though this impairs its range, the kerb weight benefits and the electric crossover is relatively light at 1,645 kg.

  • Ride Comfort

    Mazda MX-30 – Ride Comfort

The Mazda MX-30 was designed to with drivability in mind – hence the MX in its name – and so the ride is on the firm side. Aside from this, five levels of regerative braking can be selected via paddle shifters and at its strongest setting, speed is shaved off quite aggressively. This allows for what regular EV drivers call ‘one pedal driving mode’, and is intuitive to get used to.

  • Fuel Consumption

    Mazda MX-30 – Fuel Economy

Perhaps it’s time to get a new category for EVs…. Be that as it may, the Mazda MX-30 has a maximum rated range of 170 km, and will consume 176 Wh/km.

  • Conclusion

    Mazda MX-30 – Conclusion

Range-anxiety is a real issue for electric vehicle drivers, and an estimated range of 170 km will definitely raise nervous eyebrows frequetly. Mazda’s research shows that the ‘average’ EV owner does not need more than that, but similarly priced rivals like the Nissan Leaf has a range of 311 km on its 40 kWh pack.

Is the classy interior, good drive and interesting design of the Mazda MX-30, enough to make up for the range deficit? We don’t think so, and a CKD Mazda MX-30 will have to have a very, very good price point to be at all competitive in this segment
