Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Reviews

Overview

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Overview

Not many cars on sale today can claim a history of over 50 years. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is in its fifth generation now, if you only count from the time when the ‘E’ suffix was attached to the back of the saloon. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe first appeared as part of the fourth generation E-Class line-up, and was based heavily on the four-door saloon.

It is only in its current form, the C238 E-Class Coupe, that the two-door coupe is distinctly its own vehicle and fully differentiated from its stablemate. This current coupe has very recently undergone a major update in 2020, and in Malaysia this update only leaves a single variant, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe.

Exterior

The most obvious part of the update can be found outside the car. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe has a redesigned radiator grille, now surrounded with black instead of chrome trim. The black trim is replicated on the fins at the lower apron. There is a line of silver too at the lower apron, which matches the sparkly bits of the grille, and the trim at the rear of the car.

Speaking of which, the rear now features slightly redesigned taillights as well, with square graphics being used now. The facelifted Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe now rides on 19-inch alloys instead of the 20-inch ones from the pre-facelift E 300 AMG Line Coupe. 9 standard exterior colours are available, and there are 2 additional optional hues as well. Also new to the facelifted coupe are the Multibeam LED headlights with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plue.

Interior

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Interior

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe has received its fair share of updates as well. The steering wheels is of a new design and is wrapped in Nappa leather with glossy black side spokes. Just like the updated Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, the analogue clock has been removed in the coupe as well.

Black is the colour of choice inside. The black piano and carbon-fibre inserts from the pre-facelift model has been replaced with open-pore black ash wood trim. The seats are wrapped in black leather, along with the dashboard and parts of the doors.

The biggest change in here are the dual 12.3-inch MBUX infotainment system which replaces the COMAND Online unit. The new system is compatible with both major handphone operating systems. Other features in the coupe is a 3-zone LED ambient lighting system with 64 colours, Burmester sound system, sliding panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, and an electric rear sunblind.

Features

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Features

In the safety department, the Driving Assistance package is now standard and brings semi-autonomous driving into the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe. This pack has Active Distance Assist Distronic (which is an adaptive cruise control system), Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Pre-Safe Plus. The steering wheel also has a hand-off detection system.

There are 5 driving modes from which to choose: Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The driving modes will passively adjust damping on the Agility Control Suspension. The addition of Agility Control Suspension makes the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe sit 15 mm lower than its saloon sibling.

Powertrain

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Powertrain

There are a total of 4 engine options for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, but only one is available for Malaysian buyers. The 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes a maximum 262 PS between 5,500 and 6,100 rpm, while torque is rated at 370 Nm from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm. Everything is sent to the rear wheels via the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. The Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe will complete the century sprint in 6.4 seconds, and is limited to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Driving Performance

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Driving Performance

When driving the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe the way it was engineered i.e. unhurriedly, the coupe exhibits an incredibly refined and supple ride, even in Sport+ mode. The gearbox is mushy when needed, and adequately fast when necessary, but the engine lacks a little urgency when a quick overtake is needed. Even with that said, this is not a major downside, and the incredibly refined ride and slightly languorous attitude of the powertrain brings back fond memories of old coupes by the German carmaker.

Ride Comfort

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Ride Comfort

Here is where the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe truly shines. The superb interior is a great place to be, the ride is incredible, and the new C238 E-Class Coupe even has 74 mm more legroom for rear passengers as well.

Fuel Consumption

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Fuel Economy

Fuel consumption and emissions for the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe are rated at 7.0 l/100km and 161 g/km.

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe – Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the best selling model from Stuttgart, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe does not let such a historied badge down. The coupe is quintessentially Mercedes-Benz too – luxurious, spacious, stylish and filled with tech. The exclusion of a full-blooded AMG model is a good choice, and the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe available in our local market is the best one that makes sense to our buyers here.

The fuel consumption of new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe in Malaysia is 7.1 litres per 100 km,andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe E300 AMG Line is 7.1 litres per 100 km.
