2022 Mercedes-Benz E200 Review in Malaysia, Should You Top Up RM50k for the AMG Line?

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2024 has 670 images and photos, includes 378 interior images & photos, 230 exterior images & photos, 62 images of Mercedes-Benz E-Class engine and others. Check out at the front view, rear view, side and top view of new Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2024 here.

Overview

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Overview

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has finally launched the facelifted 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, now narrowed down to just two variants with a regular combustion engine. The Plug-in hybrid model is ‘not available yet’ and could return given improvements in the incentives for auto assemblers.

For the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class facelift range, two variants are on offer – E200 Avantgarde and E300 AMG Line, priced at RM 326,943 and RM 375,432 respectively, and locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang. This price range puts it in direct competition with the usual suspects BMW 5 Series, Lexus ES, Volvo S90 and Jaguar XF.

Exterior

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Exterior

The facelifted 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class changed the outlook of the front and rear of the original vehicle launched in 2017. Upfront, there are new, slimmer designed LED headlights, with a redesigned grille while the rear gets two-piece horizontal styled tail lamps and a reworked bumper design. The bonnet has allegedly been reprofiled too.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 gets the Avantgarde styling pack with a rather fussy grille design that tries to combine the traditional twin-horizontal bar with ‘panamericana’ vertical slats, 18-inch wheels (same 245/45R18 tyre sizes at all corners) and a simple front bumper design with full-width mesh pattern and thick chrome trim. Headlamps meanwhile are the LED High Performance units.

As for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300, it wears the AMG Line exterior pack with sportier front and rear bumpers, side skirt extensions, the older diamond pin grille pattern and adds Multibeam LED headlights, and larger 19-inch AMG alloy wheels with staggered tyre sizing, with the front tyres in 245/40R19 size and rear tyres measuring 275/35R19. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 AMG Line also adds a panoramic sliding sunroof.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Interior

Dashboard

The dashboard of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class can be said to be the ‘granddaddy’ of dual large-screen layout that is all in the rage now. Back in 2016, the thought of a one-continuous black fully digital panel called Widescreen Cockpit is unheard of and was quite a party piece in the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Now, the latest many products are offering it and given some character by curving it.

In this 2021 facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class range, both variants of the E200 and E300 continue to have the Widescreen Cockpit (two 12.3-inch screens) with the latest MBUX software powering them. Being the AMG Line in the E300, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class gets the dashboard and upper sections of the door panels lined with Artico material (simulated leather) and contrasting double stitching.

The central trim is meanwhile full open-pore black ash wood trim. The classic and understated wood trim also lines the door panels. The steering wheel gets upgraded to a high-tech looking AMG sports steering wheel wrapped with Nappa leather. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 Avantgarde meanwhile has an updated three-spoke steering wheel and silver aluminium trim.

The analogue clock that was once a key piece of mechanism in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been removed, even in the E300 AMG Line. The central commander dial at the lower console has been discontinued with the fitment of the latest generation MBUX system, replaced with a large and simplified touchpad.

Instrument cluster

The driver’s instrument cluster is the fully digital display measuring 12.3 inches. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class instrument display is highly customizable, with three different themes, various driving information and other content. Changing and scrolling through the myriad of information is done via the capacitive touch-sensitive controllers on the steering wheel. It is very intuitive after a few minutes behind the wheel.

Space and practicality

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers lots of headroom and legroom inside courtesy of its large dimensions as well as being purpose-built for being a limousine. The large storage space with two cupholders and room for smartphones see no changes, but the E300 AMG Line gets its wireless smartphone charger placed in there. The armrest in the rear seat also has a shallow storage compartment and two cupholders. Added practicality in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the split-folding rear seats. Boot space is rated at 540 litres.

Features

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Features

Safety features

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class continues to offer 7 airbags inclusive of a driver’s knee airbag. In terms of advanced safety systems, both variants get Mercedes-Benz proprietary Pre-safe system, Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist (AEB) and Active Parking Assist with Parktronic. The E300 AMG Line adds Active Distance Assist (Adaptive Cruise Control), Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and a 360-degree Surround Camera system.

The new Mercedes me connected service is also standard fitted. This makes the Mercedes-Benz E-Class connected to a dedicated service provider and some key features can be accessed from the smartphone app. A dedicated SOS button is located at the overhead switch panel.

Comfort features

Apart from the MBUX and Widescreen Cockpit, there are not many similarities between the Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 Avantgarde and E300 AMG Line. Rear sunshades on the door and windscreen, power-adjustable front seats with memory function and 64-colour ambient lighting are the key similarities between the two variants.

Two USB charging ports (Type C) are located inside the centre armrest for the front occupants, while the rear passengers access another two similar charging ports plus a 12-volt outlet under the rear air-conditioning duct.

The Mercedes-Benz E300 AMG Line gets a three-zone automatic air-conditioning system, two-piece panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and nicer looking door panels thanks to Artico wrapping and black ash wood trim. Artico simulated leather is used on the seat upholstery of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 Avantgarde.

Infotainment

Both variants of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class feature the MBUX Widescreen cockpit and 12.3-inch infotainment display. Control input can be done via touching the screen, the new large touchpad or capacitive touch-sensitive pad on the steering wheel as well as the famous “Hey Mercedes” voice command.

The audio system in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is used to separate the E200 Avantgarde and E300 AMG Line. The latter gets the Burmester 13-speaker, 590-Watt surround sound system maintaining the intricately designed metallic speaker grilles.

Powertrain

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Powertrain

Engine

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In the E200 Avantgarde, outputs are 197 PS/320 Nm. Meanwhile, the engine displacing the same 2.0 litres in the E300 AMG Line makes 258 PS/370 Nm. There is no electric assistance/hybrid to the engines.

Transmission

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Chassis

Both variants of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes with the Agility Control passive-adaptive damping that submissively adjusts to the road conditions. There is no manual control of the damping firmness.

Drivetrain

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. There is no option of a 4Matic all-wheel drive with a four-cylinder engine Mercedes-Benz E-Class in Malaysia.

Driving Performance

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Driving Performance

Engine performance

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 with 197 PS/320 Nm completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds, while the more powerful E300 AMG Line with 258 PS/370 Nm stops the stopwatch at 6.2 seconds. The top speed is 240 km/h for the lower engine output, while the E300 is limited to 250 km/h.

Transmission performance

The transmission has nine ratios, with the first to second shifts being unnoticeable. The shifts of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 9-Gtronic transmission are smooth and well-calibrated to the intention of the driver of either on a highway cruise or needing extra power for acceleration such as overtaking. However, there are certain conditions when the powertrain simply does not feel as punchy and responsive, something the BMW model seem to have the upper hand.

Steering and handling

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class while comfortable, is not as responsive and agile as the BMW 5 Series. When driven back-to-back, the Mercedes feels less responsive, but driven insolation, it is more dynamic compared to the outgoing generations. The Dynamic Select function allows for a choice of driving modes from comfort to sport and even a setup for Individual configuration of the steering, engine and transmission response.

Ride Comfort

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Ride Comfort

Soundproofing

The soundproofing of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a notch lower than the BMW 5 Series. We felt that there seem to be more powertrain noises being transmitting into the cabin.

Passenger comfort

In the aspect of passenger comfort, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have a supple riding comfort, unlike the BMW 5 Series. Occupants tend to feel more harshness on uneven roads and the seats also feel less comfortable.

Fuel Consumption

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is rated between 6.5 to 6.9 litres per 100 km (14.4 to 15.4 km/L).

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – Conclusion

Choosing the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is said to be the safe choice and we do not disagree. It is comfortable most of the time and driven as intended, it still carries and delivers many of the Mercedes-Benz values of comfort and refinement.
The facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class also address many complaints that the car simply looked too uninspiring and lack character.

The new rear design certainly provides a clear separation and identity. Although only two variants, the facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class targets very specific groups of buyers as well as budget allocation. It remains to be seen when will Mercedes-Benz Malaysia reintroduce the E300e plug-in hybrid with the full AMG package.

The fuel consumption of new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class in Malaysia is 9.9 litres per 100 km,andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 AMG Line is 9.9 litres per 100 km.
