Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe Reviews

Overview

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Overview

The all-new second generation W167 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé (based on the fourth generation Mercedes-Benz GLE) is Mercedes-Benz’s second attempt at challenging the ‘founding father’ of the niche coupé SUV segment, the BMW X6. Essentially a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé on stilts, the new model is now larger than ever and continues to flaunt its highly desirable coupé silhouette with a dramatically slopping roofline and a fastback rear profile. The front has also been thoroughly revised, establishing itself as the more upmarket and more luxury option over the smaller Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé.

Launched alongside the flagship Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV, the latest niche from Stuttgart is made available in the sole GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line trim in Malaysia. A stand-alone mid-range Mercedes-AMG variant, the GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé is also available with an uprated M256 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six engine from the GLE 450 Coupé, augmented by a 48-volt mild hybrid EQ Boost system. The car is locally assembled in Malaysia with a price tag of RM 475,501 (OTR without insurance and 0 % sales tax).

Exterior

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Design

According to Mercedes, the all-new Coupé has been styled to be less fussy than its predecessor. Mercedes’ ‘sensuous elegant’ approach to the exterior design is evident by the smooth yet muscular body contours, accentuated by subtle and clean body lines. The dramatically slopping roofline exemplify its coupé form while the broad shoulder haunches give the car an imposing stance.

The revised front fascia with the AMG Line exterior package showcases Mercedes’ prominent single-louvred diamond grille, punctuated by a massive three-pointed star. Flanking the grille is the newly designed and more angular Multibeam LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, housed within a wing-shaped front bumper with large faux air intakes and silver-coloured front skid plate.

Along the side, you will find the aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs and squared-off wheel arches with a standard 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels that go with it. Chrome elements are tastefully applied across the exterior around the front apron, window frames as well as the rear apron. At the rear, the sleek LED lamps design no doubt draws its inspiration from the E-Class sedan, distinctively different from the broader unit with three-dimensional lighting signatures seen on other Mercedes-Benz SUVs. AMG Line exterior also adds diffuser-like element at the rear, flanked by a pair of chrome plated exhaust exits.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Dimension

While the Coupe’s wheelbase is 20mm longer than its predecessor, which no doubt improves interior space, but it is still 60mm shorter in the wheelbase than the standard Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV, which goes to show Mercedes-Benz’s commitment in making the Coupé a sporty car with hot-hatch-like reflexes on the road. 77mm is trimmed off the roof from the standard SUV model for that coupé-like effect.

Interior

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Interior

Stepping inside and your attention is immediately drawn to the expansive dual 12.3-inch widescreen display, mounted onto an octagonal vented panel on the dashboard with one side serving as the driver’s instrument display while the other for the MBUX infotainment system. The squared-out quad air vents finished in satin chrome mimics the 3D graphics graphic in the taillamp.

Like the flagship Mercedes-Benz GLS, the centre console is elevated with a pair of robust SUV-type grab handles. Anthracite open-pore oak trim elements, man-made Artico leather upholstered dashboard and door beltline, Nappa leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and the AMG floor mats comes as standard with the AMG Line interior. Also fitted are the panoramic sliding sunroof, double sunblind, and electric sunblinds for the rear doors.

Despite the slopping roofline, adults will fit just fine at the back with decent amount of head room and plenty of kneeroom to get comfortable. The coupé design’s inherently narrow window height and shallow rear windscreen limits natural lighting into the cabin and limits all round visibility. Opening the fastback liftgate at the rear reveals a rather impressive 655 litres of cargo space, 25 litre more than the supposedly more practical standard SUV.

Driving Performance

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Driving Performance

Engine

Power comes courtesy of the M256 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six engine, augmented by a 48-volt mild hybrid system consisting of a starter-alternator, which provides a further 22 PS and 250 Nm over short periods via an EQ Boost function. This powertrain setup with Dynamic Select is also applied on the flagship Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV. It develops 367 PS from 5,500 RPM and 500 Nm of torque from 1,600 RPM. The combined performance results in a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Transmission

Drive is sent to all four wheels via a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission through Mercedes-Benz’ proprietary 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 100% of torque to each axle, maximizing traction for improved safety and agility

Ride Comfort

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Ride Comfort

The car comes fitted with the Airmatic Package as standard. The adaptive damping system paired with the sophisticated air suspension is able to adjust automatically to the driving conditions, speed and load. However, due to the sportier chassis setup, the ride is leaning towards the firm side and easily upset by road imperfections. That said, it is an outstanding highway cruiser once you have got the car up to speed, allowing the air suspension to do what it does best.

Fuel Consumption

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Fuel Consumption

Mercedes claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.2 L/100 km and emits as little as 205 g/km of CO2.

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé Conclusion

Nothing screams ‘look at me!’ more than a large coupé SUV dressed with an enormous front grille and an in-your-face Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star badge, that undoubtedly haunts the rear view mirror of many on the highway. There is no denying that the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé is not perfect, with its less than satisfactory ride comfort and form over function exterior design, but one thing that it is not lacking is its unrivaled sense of occasion and on-road presence. Alongside the BMW X6, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé has established itself to be one of the best sporty Coupé SUV you can buy today.
