Powertrain

Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class – Powertrain

Engine

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is offered in two engine choices- a V8 and the quintessence V12, both turbocharged and super refined. The S 560 comes with a 4.0-litre V8 that has outputs of 469 PS/700 Nm. Meanwhile, the V12 engine displacing the 6.0 litres in the S 650 makes 630 PS/1,000 Nm. There is no electric assistance/hybrid to the engines.

Transmission

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission for the V8 engine, while seven speeds are all that is needed for the big V12 engine.

Chassis

The best suspension system are reserved for the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class. Apart from the fully adaptive Magic Body Control air suspension system that adjust to the undulation of the road surface, a specially designed camera called Road Scan Technology ‘sees’ and scans the surface ahead, adjusting the air pressures accordingly for an even better ride comfort. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class rides on 20-inch wheels.

Drivetrain

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9- or 7-speed automatic transmission. There is no option of a 4Matic all-wheel drive in the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class.

Driving Performance

Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class – Driving Performance

Engine performance

The V8 engine that usually serve duties in Mercedes-Benz AMG 63-series models is heavily revised to deliver smooth, quiet and refined performance. Occupants can barely hear the engine raising up its speed, as all noise is muffled to just a hum in front.

The large super limousine Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class S 560 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, while the big V12 with even smoother power delivery and in-gear acceleration does it in 4.7 seconds.
Transmission performance

Being a Maybach model, all noises and vibrations are heavily masked. As such, one does not even know what the transmission is doing unless its full throttle acceleration for long periods of time to attain the highest acceleration.
Even then, the transmission in the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is just a muffled sound. Little is felt by the occupants.

Steering and handling

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is a large super limousine. Steering and handling are adequate but ride comfort takes precedence. The air suspension nonetheless does a great job in limiting bodyroll while taking U-turns at higher than normal speeds.

Ride Comfort

Soundproofing

The soundproofing of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is expected of a super limousine of this stature. Quietness, refinement and isolation are keywords in the cabin. However, we felt that the Rolls-Royce Ghost still does a better task of isolating the mechanicals away from the occupants. The noises are relatively more audible in the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class.

Passenger comfort

In the aspect of passenger comfort, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class offers a very supple ride thanks to the adaptive air suspension with front scanning technology. Occupants are certainly well taken care in the super limousine.

Fuel Consumption

Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class S 560 is rated at 10.1 litres per 100 km (9.9 km/L).

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class – Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is the epitome of Mercedes-Benz ownership. Being made to compete with the best automobiles such as Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class offers tremendous value as the riding comfort and refinement is very close to these British marques, but at a lower price. However, with both the front and rear designs of the Maybach looking like a regular S-Class, prospects might find they need something more expressive.

The fuel consumption of new 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class in Malaysia is 11.7 litres per 100 km,andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2022 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class S 580 4Matic is 11.7 litres per 100 km.
