Nissan Terra – Overview

History

The Nissan Terra is a mid-size SUV produced by Nissan. This car is based on the Navara D23 pickup truck. The car was first introduced in China in April 2018 and was unveiled at the Auto China auto show in Beijing that same month. In China, this car is marketed by Dongfeng Nissan. 

Currently the Terra is positioned in size between the X-Trail/Rogue compact crossover and the Patrol/Fleet large-size SUV and competes with the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Ford Everest, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Isuzu MU-X. This car replaces the Paladin in China. On 28 May 2018, Terra was launched in the Philippines. This car gets the option of a 2.5 liter diesel engine. Compared to the Chinese version, it is 15 mm (0.6 inches) wider, 3 mm (0.1 inches) longer and 7 seats (versus 5). This car is offered in five trim options.

New generation

The Nissan Terra 2021 is the automaker’s latest take on a full-sized SUV that packs upon seating capacity of up to seven occupants inside. The car that has a magnificent road presence is a king when it comes to the space inside its smartly designed cabin. 

Further, Nissan’s V-Motion structure design provides the Terra with a sport and aggressive finish that is accompanied by LED daytime running lights. In terms of its powertrain, the Terra is powered by a single 2.5L diesel engine, available throughout the lineup. The powertrain configuration is able to churn up a total of up to 187 hp of power, besides giving out 450 Nm of peak torque.

Price

The Terra is priced between ₱1.719 Million and ₱2.409 Million.

Front design

Nissan designed the Terra based on the Navara and you could spot many similarities between the two models. However, the Terra has its own personal flares to make it an independent model. The Terra shows off its muscular, ruggedness with a robust V-motion grill with a honeycomb center and a “smiley face” bumper design. 

Headlight

The headlight is a mesmerizing design by using sharp edges combined with a boomerang style daytime running lights. The same can be said for the rear lights. Not only does it attract your attention, it makes the car look very edgy and sporty. new pair of headlights that are in quad-LEDs , and a new front bumper that also houses LED fog lamps on higher trims. Color options for the new Nissan Terra include Nebula Metallic Red, Forged Metallic Copper, Lunar Metallic Gray, Galaxy Black, Brilliant Silver, and Aspen Pearl White. 

Side and tyre configuration

Nissan gave the Terra an extended spoiler and a rear bumper diffuser to complete the sporty persona. In the Thailand market, the Terra is available in 18-inch alloy rims with 225/60 tyres. According to Nissan, the ground clearance of 225 mm is the best-in-class. 

Rear design 

The rear view of the Nissan Terra still looks sturdy with dimensions that are quite wide. Although the character of an SUV is identical to dashing, a luxurious impression can also be obtained. Like the chrome pattern on the grille with the V-Motion as a characteristic of Nissan products. Meanwhile, if you compare the design of the taillights, they are still large, unlike rivals who have taillights with a narrowed impression.

Central Console 

Its interior has been vastly improved all thanks to its new dashboard that looks better and is treated with finer materials when compared to the outgoing model. Durability and longevity are undoubtedly highlights in this regard, coupled with a generous amount of tech features. Thanks to several advanced features embedded in the front dashboard. One of the things that can be seen is the 2DIN entertainment system with a functional touch screen that is quite spacious.

Seats & trim 

If you want to sit on any bench, the Nissan Terra provides a spacious cabin space. Each passenger can see a wide view thanks to the second and third row seats that are designed to increase. the cabin space on this premium SUV made by Nissan is designed freely so that it can fit 7 passengers at once. On the one hand, passenger comfort is also guaranteed.

Space and Practicality

You no longer need to get off your wheel to fold the second row seats. Now it's even easier with the push of a button. The second row of seats is easily folded, making it easier for passengers to enter and sit in the back seat. With a sliding arrangement of 60/40 in the second row and 50/50 in the rear seat, the Nissan Terra provides flexibility for you to load goods. The second and third row seats are easy to shift, so every passenger can feel extra comfort.

Luggage

Selain itu, untuk kapasitas bagasi yang diberikan juga sangat minim, terlebih lagi jika kursi pada baris ketiga ini In addition, the luggage capacity provided is also very minimal, especially if the seats in the third row are installed. So users cannot carry a lot of luggage that can be placed in the trunk, or if users want to carry a lot of luggage, the third row seats must be folded. Then the luggage space will be very spacious.

Intelligent configuration 

The Nissan Terra comes with an array of intelligent features that includes keyless entry and engine start push-button. In the center of the instrument cluster, there is a five-inch multi-info screen that lets you switch between tire pressure, 4-wheel power distribution and fuel economy. Another seven-inch touchscreen serves as the infotainment unit.

Safety features 

The Terra also carries over an improved version of the brand’s Nissan Intelligent Mobility system. This grants it access to an around-view monitor, forward collision warning, intelligent emergency braking, lane departure warning, driver alertness, blind spotting warning, hill start, and hill descent control for all variants of the SUV with the exception of the EL model. A tire pressure monitoring system is also present with the Nissan Terra but for its VL variants only.

Comfort Features

The Terra features a dual-zone auto air-con with climate control for the front. Meanwhile, there is a 360 degrees air-con that ensures even air distribution and cools the interior quickly with 2 vents on the ceiling for both second and third row. There are also air-con vents on the center console for the second-row passengers.

As for parking convenience, the Nissan Intelligent Mobility package is here. First, is the Around View Monitor (AVM) where Nissan put a digital rear-view mirror, a first for the segment inside the Terra and links it with to four cameras installed around the car to provide a 360 degree bird’s eye view. Then, the Moving Object Detection (MOD), detects moving objects through sensors in the front and back and lastly, a reverse camera completes the package.

Infotainment Features

The Nissan Terra now features either a 9-inch infotainment system for its VL models and an 8-inch infotainment system for its VE and EL models that grants it access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is important to note that wireless Apple CarPlay is also available for the VL variants. A BOSE premium 8-speaker sound system is also available with the SUV for its top-of-the-line VL 4x4 AT variant. The rest of the model gets a 6-speaker sound system with two tweeters instead. The middle row of the SUV also retains its passenger amenities as the VL variants get an 11-inch flip-down monitor that now comes with an HDMI input.

Engine

Powering the Nissan SUV is its YD25 inline 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that comes with a turbocharger. It still produces 187 hp and 450 Nm of torque which is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual. The top of the line model can be had with a 4x4 system that features part-time 4WD, with 2H/4L/4H with a transfer select switch.

Transmission 

Nissan Terra are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic transmission. However, unlike other countries, Thailand only gets the automatic transmission and power is directed to either the rear wheel or 4 wheels. There is a manual mode where drivers can manually shift gears via the shift lever.

Riding & Handling

With fully independent suspension all around, a punchy diesel engine, ample road feedback from the wheel, the Terra makes a good case for driving dynamics in the world of midsize SUVs. The vehicle can come equipped with a 4x4 system that allows it to go offroad with ease if need be. Heavy steering is the tradeoff for more feel, and body roll is expected. Hard acceleration and braking were handled well by the Terra, and the surge in power that most diesel engines are known for is less perceptible, allowing for a smoother speedup.

Fuel Economy

As for fuel economy, the Nissan Terra engine can do an average of 7 km/l in the city and around 14 km/l on the highway. Not bad considering the vehicle’s size, weight and the power it puts out.

Nissan Terra - Conclusion 

Despite its origin from a pick-up truck, the Nissan Terra is anything but crude. It remains the Navara’s off-road abilities but also gain comforts that would suit the city roads. It has all the needed safety features and extra Intelligence that surpasses its competitor. Overall, it is not only practical but also, comfort and powerful. It is unfortunate that Malaysia did not receive the Nissan Terra and maybe in the future, Nissan will bring it here.
