Nissan X-Gear Reviews

Overview

Nissan Livina – Overview

The all-new Nissan Livina was launched in 2019 in Indonesia, and it is based on the Mitsubishi Xpander as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. The previous MPV received the X-Gear treatment early in its life cycle, which is mostly cosmetic upgrades that include black fenders, side body garnish, sportier bumpers and roof rails. The second generation Nissan Livina, bearing the designation ND1W, has not been given the same X-Gear treatment yet, and no news has been given on it yet.

The new Livina is available in a single body style only, unlike the old one. It is a 5-door with crossover-like proportions that can seat 7. Moving it is a 1.5-litre engine witn no turbocharger, that can be paired to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. There are four trim levels available right now in Indonesia: E, EL, VE, and VL. There’s also a special ‘Sporty’ edition, limited to 100 units with additional red and black accents, as well as a few extra features.

Exterior

Nissan Livina – Exterior

The new Nissan Livina is an all-new car that is basically a Mitsubishi Xpander with a different skin. The looks have evolved quite dramatically from a low-slung estate to a crossover, which is a very welcome change. Up front is the familiar Nissan V-motion grille and daytime running lights, while visual drama is added with silver trims all around on the front bumper, sides, and diffuser-like inserts at the rear.

There are obvious relations to the X-Trail at the back here. The blacked out pillars create a nice floating roof effect from the side as well. The final iteration of the old Livina with X-Gear treatment has refreshed front bumpers, black fenders all around, black body cladding around the wheel arches and sides, and finally a set of roof rails that are functional.

It was made available in 2013, and vehicle design has moved on drastically in the past decade so don’t expect the same treatment to the new Livina. Even so, there’s a lot of silver around this new ND1W Livina, so maybe it is due for some black accents. In the first generation, the Livina only seats 5 with its two rows, while the Grand Livina, with a longer rear overhang, has 3 rows of seats. The new Livina already has 3 rows of seats for 7 people, and so it’s unlikely to have a Grand Livina variant.

Interior

Nissan Livina – Interior

Depending on trim, interior seats will come in black and beige fabric, and black leather, while The steering wheel, which is tilt and telescopic capable, is finished in urethane on all variants except the highest which is finished in leather. The highest variants will also get wood finishes on the instrument panel. When the last row is not needed, it can be folded down for a fully flat floor.

Features

Nissan Livina – Features

There are 4 variants for sale in Indonesia, and the line up, from lowest to highest, is E MT, EL MT, EL AT, VE AT, and VL AT. At peak trim, the Nissan Livina will feature a 7-inch touchscreen head unit that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a colour MID with eco indicator, reverse camera, keyless entry with push start, and a 12V socket for each row. All models will receive dual airbags, ABS with EBD, while the VE and VL gets additional equipment like Brake Assist, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and the reverse camera mentioned above.

Powertrain

Nissan Livina – Powertrain

Moving the crossover is a 1.5-litre engine with 104 PS and 141 Nm of torque, which arrives at 4,000 rpm. This humble powerplant can be paired to a 4-speed automatic, and a 5-speed manual. Only the lower E and EL variant gets the manual box, however. A 4-speed auto is cheap and reliable, but it really should not exist anymore in the world today.

Driving Performance

Nissan Livina – Driving Performance

Performance it not the goal here. Moving people at a budget is, and so body roll and a soft suspension setup is to be expected. The 4-speed auto is noticeably ragged, particularly at high engine speeds, but revs are needed for the NA engine to perform, so this is a no-win situation.

Ride Comfort

Nissan Livina – Ride Comfort

Aside from the noise of the engine, the Nissan Livina is a comfortable people-mover. 7 people can fit with relative ease, and the fold-flat third row makes it a versatile vehicle. The ride is compliant, as it should be, while ground clearance is high enough that the occasional floods in the city should not be a problem.

Fuel Consumption

Nissan Livina – Fuel Economy

The 1.5-litre mill, with the 4-speed auto, returns 16.5 km/l (6.1 l/100km). This is quite an impressive figure.

Conclusion

Nissan Livina – Conclusion

The first gen Nissan Livina was a cheap and cheerful people mover, especially in Grand Livina form, while the X-Gear gave the car a more rugged appearance. However, with the budget price came a budget appearance. The second generation Nissan Livina is still cheap (at least it is in Indonesia) but thankfully it no longer looks like a budget family car – it is quite aesthetically appealing in our opinion. However, though this is what the rest of the economical segment uses, we really can’t agree with the engine and transmission options.
