Overview

Since the second generation, the Nissan X-Trail has been a top contender in the family C-Segment SUV category. Gone is the boxy design with it's rougher edges that would fit an office factory setting than as a family car, the second generation is rounder and more stylish with the offerings of what a larger young family would need.

The 2019 Nissan X-Trail was updated to bare more refinement and more safety features. Airbag count was upped from 2 to as much as 6 airbags while safety systems include Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking Nissan's version of ADAS, and a host of other features like Lane Departure Warning and 360-degree surround view.

Dashboard

The facelifted Nissan X-Trail's biggest difference is the interior dashboard. All variants get a plain black dashboard garnished with piano black trims and also leather-wrapped panels.

The Nissan X-Trail has a classic instrument cluster paired with an Advanced Drive-Assist Display that not only displays all important information but also navigation and, in the hybrid, the battery usage.

Space and Practicality

Cubby spaces are well distributed in the front with cup holders aplenty and it even has a large centre console for storage. The Nissan X-Trail is a spacious car, but only for the front and middle row passengers. The third-row passengers only have sufficient legroom to not feel cramped.

For a 5+2 seater SUV, the Nissan X-Trail has a very large boot. Without the third-row seats deployed, the SUV boasts 1,520-litres of boot space. Even if the third-row seats are in use, the Nissan X-Trail still offers 500-litres of boot space.

Features

2019 Nissan X-Trail Specs and Features

Safety Features

Since the facelift, the Nissan X-Trail's safety package has much to boast. The range-topping variants now come with 6 airbags, 360-degree camera which Nissan knows as Intelligent Around View Monitor, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, brake assist known as Intelligent Engine Brake and Intelligent Traction Control. The Hybrid and 2.5-litre 4WD variant also get Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking.

Comfort Features

All variants come with a sporty flat-bottom leather steering wheel with matching leather gear shift knob and dual-zone auto climate control with rear air vents. Leather seats are available on all variants except for the lowest 2.0-L 2WD variant that makes do with fabric seats. Infotainment

Since the update, the facelifted Nissan X-Trail now boasts a 7-inch touchscreen display that houses the infotainment system controls. The X-Trail is also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ready.

Powertrain

Engine

The Nissan X-Trail offers 2 engines, a 2.5-litre engine that dispenses 171 PS and 233 Nm, and a 2.0-litre engine that produces 144 PS and 200 Nm. For the range-topping variant, Nissan has tacked on a hybrid system to the 2.0-litre engine that has a combined output of 185 PS and 360 Nm.

2.5-litre DOHC Twin CVTC petrol 171 PS @ 6,000 rpm 233 Nm @ 4,000 rpm
2.0-litre DOHC with Twin CVTC, Direct Fuel Injection petrol 144 PS @ 6,000 rpm 200 Nm @ 4,400 rpm

Transmission

All engine options on the Nissan X-Trail is attached to an X-TRONIC CVT with 7-speed manual mode

Drivetrain

Only one variant of the Nissan X-Trail is driven on all four wheels, that is the 2.5-L 4WD. The Hybrid and other variants are front-wheel drive only.

Driving Performance

Acceleration

The 2.0-litre 2WD engine is capable of making the century sprint in 11.9 seconds. This is the entry-level variant, so the higher Nissan X-Trail variants can be expected to make that sprint in an even shorter amount of time.

Engine Performance

The Nissan X-Trail's 2.0-litre engine gives you a smooth drive, though it's not the most sprightly engine in its segment. It doesn't get out of breath during a spirited highway drive and remains compose in heavy traffic congestion.

Transmission Performance

The Nissan X-Trail has a smooth CVT unit that is smooth no matter the speed. It's relatively quiet though, at times, the CVT's whine punctuates into the cabin during high speeds.

Steering and Handling

Steering in the Nissan X-Trail is light but still has enough feeling that it doesn't feel numb.

Ride Comfort

Soundproofing

Soundproofing in the facelifted Nissan X-Trail has improved tremendously compared the pre-facelift though this still doesn't make the SUV the quietest in its segment.

Passenger Comfort

The Nissan X-Trail's suspension is set just right so there isn't much body roll for a high riding car. It's set so it easily irons out bumps.

Fuel Economy

In our tests, the 2.0-litre engine read 9.6-litres/ 100 km after a distance of 134.2 km. This is the entry-level 2.0-litre engine, so expect less fuel to be used in the Hybrid variant.

Conclusion

Refinement levels have definitely improved by leaps and bounds in the Nissan X-Trail, especially since the introduction of the facelift in 2019. It no longer bares the boxy workhorse feel of the first generation and features all kinds of safety devices that put it in very close contention with rivals like the Honda CR-V. The Nissan X-Trail is also the only SUV in its segment to offer a hybrid variant that will help save more fuel, so if you're looking for a zippy fuel-saving C-segment SUV, the Nissan X-Trail is a perfect choice.
