Porsche Cayenne Reviews

Overview

Porsche Cayenne – Overview

The saviour for the Porsche brand and allowed for even greater 911 models thanks to huge revenue and profits. The first-generation Porsche Cayenne was launched in 2003 and received a rapturous response from the global market. A Porsche branded vehicle and performance is now more accessible, usable every day and for everyone. Back then, no product delivered sportscar-like straight-line acceleration, flat handling and utility for five plus their gear like the Cayenne Turbo did.

Since its launch nearly 20 years ago, Porsche has delivered over 800,000 units of the Cayenne model. The ‘sports car for five’ while catchy, is well-substantiated thanks to the performance level that few of its rivals can match yet does not dilute from the Porsche identity.
Now in its third generation, the Porsche Cayenne is joined by a coupe body style alongside the standard wagon. In Malaysia, the Porsche Cayenne range starts from RM 665,000 for a base specification, and the sales team usually quotes an additional RM 70,000 is required to bring the Cayenne to expected levels of equipment. The Cayenne S starts from RM 907,315 and the Cayenne Turbo from RM 1.5 million.

Porsche Malaysia, under Sime Darby Auto Performance, also operates Asia-Pacific’s largest Porsche 3S centre in Petaling Jaya. Many higher performance Cayenne variants such as GTS, Hybrid and Coupe are available on application, thus prices fluctuate according to features and availability.
The Porsche Cayenne has the BMW X6 xDrive40i, Maserati Levante and the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 Coupe as its key competitors. The Range Rover Sport is also a usual model buyers compare the Porsche Cayenne with.

The Porsche SUV is now fully manufactured outside of Germany, in Volkswagen Group’s super SUV plant in Bratislava. The facility also manufactures the Audi Q8, Volkswagen Touareg and body shells of the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga, where all the super SUV share a significant degree of commonality under the Volkswagen MLB Evo platform.

Design

The tail lamps are slimmer compared to the previous generations, making the Cayenne look sportier as well as more Porsche through the four-point signature lighting front and back. Front lighting units are adaptive LED with Porsche Dynamic Lighting System.

The standard wheel size is 19-inches, but the majority are optioned with 20- or 21-inches, and usually in the multi-spoke RS Spyder or the five-twin V-spoke Cayenne Exclusive design. The tyre sizes are also staggered (wider rear tyre) contributing to more dynamic handling and better passenger comfort.

The Porsche Cayenne uses a lot more aluminium in this third-generation model all to achieve lower weight. The model is now 220 kg lighter than it first debuted in 2003.
Aluminium is used on the bonnet, fenders, doors, roof and tailgate. The Turbo model gets an active rear spoiler on its tailgate-mounted roof spoiler. Soft closing doors (power door closer) is one of the many options in the Porsche Cayenne.

Interior

Porsche Cayenne – Interior

Dashboard

The dashboard features the digital environment called Porsche Advanced Cockpit (PAC). The instrument cluster still houses a traditional tachometer flanked by two screens, while the infotainment is a large 12.3-inch HD screen.
The lower console, a section which used to house a dozen of switches, now neatly groups controls for the infotainment shortcut, air-conditioning and vehicle settings. The use of touch-sensitive panels like a smartphone create a clean, technical look but also means the constant need to wipe fingerprints off.

The two grab handles meant for off-road driving, introduced in the first-generation Cayenne, continue to adorn the lower console.
When equipped with the Sports Chrono Package, the centre of the dashboard houses a stopwatch and the steering wheel has the dial switch for the driving modes - Normal, sport, sport plus and individual. The centre button called Sport Response enabled maximum powertrain response for 20 seconds, sufficient for overtaking manoeuvre.
Customers can sieve through a long list of customization for the interior, such as the trim inserts, seat belt colour and even the gear lever. However, the regular Cayenne just makes do with regular black foot pedals.

Instrument cluster

The instrument cluster in the Porsche Cayenne is one of the last models with a physical gauge. The large central tachometer (customisable colour) is flanked by two high-definition 7-inch screens that display driving information as well as navigation maps.
A head-up display can also be included to complement the instrument cluster.

Space and practicality

The Porsche SUV continues to exhibit functionality in the stylish interior. Two large cup holders are featured at the lower console. The armrest is larger than its competitors and the storage space in the doors are deep and large too.
The cargo space of the Porsche Cayenne is 770 litres with all the seats up and you can lay them down via a 40-20-40 split to a cavernous 1,708 litres.

Features

Porsche Cayenne – Features

Safety features

There are 8 airbags, including knee airbags for front occupants. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a cost option in the Porsche Cayenne. Adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping, and blind-spot monitoring are a-la-carte items in the personalization menu of the large sports SUV.
The 360-degree birds eye view parking camera is regularly fitted as standard by Porsche Malaysia though. Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection is standard too.

Comfort features

The comfortable front seats in the Porsche Cayenne come with plenty of adjustments, including a four-way lumbar with memory function. Four-zone automatic air-conditioning with ioniser is standard fitment and to increase privacy for the rear seats, electronically operated sun blinds are available.
Rear occupants can also recline the seat back by 29 degrees, offering better comfort for long-distance journeys.

Infotainment

The large central display measures 12.3-inch and functions as the controls for the vehicle settings as well. Connectivity to the infotainment system includes USB Type C chargers and SD card slot.
A BOSE-brand premium sound system plays high-quality output over 14 speakers and 710 Watts. For those who truly want the highest featured sound system, there is the Burmester system with 21 speakers with a total output of 1,455 Watts.

Powertrain

Porsche Cayenne – Powertrain

Engine

All engines in the Porsche Cayenne are now turbocharged. The base Cayenne model features a new 3.0-litre V6 engine with a turbocharger that packs a maximum of 340 PS/450 Nm of torque, while the Cayenne S features a new 2.9-litre V6 engine with two turbochargers to heightened the engine outputs to 440 PS/550 Nm of torque.
As for the Cayenne Turbo, a twin-turbocharged V8 engine displacing 4.0-litres dishes out 550 PS/770 Nm of torque, while the Cayenne GTS uses a lower state-of-tune of the V8 engine with 460 PS and 620 Nm of torque.

Plug-in hybrid powertrains are also available, with the 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine paired to an electric motor to deliver a combined system output of 462 PS/700 Nm whilst delivering 3.7-litre per 100 km of fuel consumption.

Transmission

All variants of the Porsche Cayenne only come with the 8-Tiptronic S automatic transmission. Large metallic shift paddles are placed on the steering wheel for ease of use and familiarity.
Selecting the Sport Chrono Package will enable the use of the Performance Start or launch control mode, allowing the driver to have a controlled full-throttle acceleration from standstill.
The use of ultra-tall 7th and 8th gear ratios allow for a quieter ride and better fuel economy, while a short first gear provides precise throttle control during off-road driving.

Chassis

The front and rear suspension are laid out using a multi-link arrangement with plenty of aluminium members. The shock absorbers are a multi-chamber adaptive air suspension unit and are standard in the Porsche SUV. The system allows as much as 25 mm raising or lowering plus a self-levelling function when on the move.
Power Steering Plus enables a variable steering ratio for easier parking as well as better stability at high-speed driving. One key feature that makes the new Porsche Cayenne handle so well is the Rear-axle steering. It dramatically lowers the turning ratio at U-turns or tight bends, while increasing stability and precision at high speeds.

Finally, there is the braking system that Porsche is famous for. The front calipers on the Cayenne is a four-piston setup with 350 mm discs, while the Cayenne S and above are six-piston units and 390 mm discs. Porsche also offers a performance-bridging brake disc between the regular cast iron disc and carbon-ceramic discs (PCCB) called Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB) which leaves a mirror-finish reflection on the discs thanks to the tungsten-carbide coating.
Porsche also has designed the Cayenne SUV to wade water channels or rivers up to a depth of 500 mm.

Drivetrain

All Porsche Cayennes come standard with the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive system featuring an electronically and map-controlled multi-plate clutch. Traction between the front and rear axle is continuously varied according to various parameters, and electronic systems will send power to the corner with the most traction.

Driving Performance

Porsche Cayenne – Driving Performance

The Porsche Cayenne with 340 PS completes 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, when Performance Start Sport Chrono Package is used. The twin-turbocharged Cayenne S with 450 PS shaves one second off, while the Cayenne Turbo V8 does the benchmark sprint time in just 3.9 seconds.

The transmission shifts gears ever so smoothly in every gear as well as perfectly executed blipping when downshifting. Even in the 340 PS Cayenne, power is sufficient for everyday driving, thanks to the well-engineered and programming of the engine and transmission, delivering immediate response through from the correct gear.

Steering and handling

Straight-line performance is easy to execute, but quality and brand values shine in the handling of the vehicle. The Porsche SUV does what it excels in since 2003- well-controlled composure and agile handling.
Thanks to the fitment and brilliant calibration of the air suspension, rear-axle steering and all-wheel drive, the Porsche Cayenne handles well ahead of the competition. BMW comes close with the X6, but the final precision in steering and braking is still triumphed by Porsche.

The rear-axle steering makes the over-2-tone SUV carve corners and bends as if it is a compact sports car, offering so much agility and confidence.

Ride Comfort

Porsche Cayenne – Ride Comfort

Air suspension provides plenty of comfort via self-levelling and adaptive control logic. The system is also able to filter out plenty of harshness associated with large 21-inch wheels. Further comfort for occupants also contributed by the plush seats- they hold and support the occupants incredibly well thanks to the shape and size.

Fatigue is also minimized through a quiet cabin, with low levels of noise penetrating the cabin.

Fuel Consumption

Porsche Cayenne – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Porsche Cayenne is 11.5 litres per 100 km (8.7 km/L) under the WLTP testing standard.

Conclusion

Porsche Cayenne – Conclusion

There is a little-to-no fault in the latest-generation Porsche Cayenne. The looks have matured and blend well with the current crop of Porsche coupes and sedans. Straight-line is ever impressive even with the entry-level 340 PS engine.

While straight-line and cornering ability is expected in the Porsche Cayenne, what sets it apart from the previous generation as well as competitors is the hospitable cabin. It looks high-tech, advanced and incredibly spacious and practical.

Driving on the expressway or after work hours is relaxing thanks to great sound insulation. It certainly has sport cars for five and a multitalented one too. Just be prepared to spend a little if you have many items that attract you in the long options list.

The fuel consumption of new 2024 Porsche Cayenne in Malaysia is 9.2 litres per 100 km,andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2023 Porsche Cayenne 3.0 V6 is 9.2 litres per 100 km.
