The Toyota Hiace (pronounced as “High Ace”) is a light commercial panel van that is no stranger to Malaysian roads. The highly versatile commercial van was first introduced by Toyota in Japan back in 1967 and is available in multiple body configuration including minivan, minibus, crew van, taxi and ambulance.
The sole variant available in Malaysia is the now fifth generation H500 Hiace Panel Van 2.5 Turbo Diesel, locally assembled by UMW Toyota Motor at the Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB) in Shah Alam.
Alternatives to the Toyota commercial van include the 1.6 L Nissan NV200 Venette, the Maxus V80, or the more compact 1.5 L Daihatsu Gran Max.
The Toyota Hiace panel van is essentially a box on wheels and typically seen in white. The exterior design of the fifth generation H200 Toyota Hiace sees very little significant changes over the past 17 years since its introduction in 2004.
The flat front fascia features two square headlights separated by a radiator grille and complete with a ruggedly styled black plastic bumper. The lack of a front bonnet is due to its engine placement that is right below its occupants.
Sliding door is available only on the left side of the vehicle. Two glass windows at the front and windowless body behind the B pillar limits all round visibility. A large tail gate opening allows for easy access and loading.

The interior construction of the Toyota Hiace panel van is simple and robust. Up front, the 2-seater panel van features high seating grey fabric seats, grey plastic dashboard, centre console with three-dial control air conditioning and a three-dial analog instrument panels.
The unapologetically square exterior of the Toyota Hiace also translates into a more spacious and usable interior cargo space that allows for more versatility to the items carried on board.
Anti-corrosion materials are used in key areas throughout the vehicle to provide long-lasting protection against rust.
The Toyota Hiace comes fiited as standard an air conditioning system, audio system with CD player, tuner, MP3, AUX-Jack, USB and 2 speakers. The driver and passenger also get front power windows.
With the combination of a robust front double-wishbone torsion bar spring suspension and rear leaf spring suspension, the Toyota Hiace promises stability and comfort even at full load. Turning radius of 5.0 m makes the sizeable van fairly maneuverable in tight spaces.
In terms of safety, the Toyota Hiace comes fitted with dual airbags for the front occupants, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), anti-theft Vehicle Security System with auto door lock, Load Sensing Proportioning and Bypass Valve (LSP & BV), and a Safety Brake Pedal which folds out of the way to minimize risk of driver’s leg injury in case of a frontal collision.
Powering the rear wheels is Toyota’s 2KD-FTV 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Turbo Diesel engine with common rail direct injection, producing 102 PS at 3600 RPM and 260 NM of torque from 1600 RPM.
Having been around since 2005, the tried and tested Toyota power unit has proven to be durable and reliable. It offers a practical balance of power and fuel economy. The same engine can also be found in the previous iteration of the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via Toyota’s 5-speed manual transmission.
With the engine placement right below the occupants, engine heat and vibration will inevitably sip into the cabin and can be uncomfortable during long drives.
Front suspension is double-wishbone torsion bar type while the rear leaf spring suspension offers a more comfortable ride under load.
Toyota Hiace is economical to run as well, with transmission and engine-dependent combined fuel economy figures of between 8.1-litres/100km* and 10.8-litres/100km
The Toyota Hiace has long been a trusted tool for transportation of goods for business operators. Very few can compete with what it has got to offer. With its economical and reliable engine, ample space along with practical functionalities, the Toyota Hiace will be a prime choice for commercial use.
