  • Overview

At the time of writing, the new 2022 Toyota Veloz has not been officially unveiled in Malaysia, although pricing and specifications are already available – however, changes may occur on the final product when it is launched. This new Toyota Veloz replaces the Toyota Avanza in our Malaysian market – the Toyota Veloz is actually the sportier version of the Toyota Avanza in neighbouring markets (think Vellfire and Alphard), but Malaysia only gets the Toyota Veloz.

The recently launched Perodua Alza is almost a twin to the Toyota Veloz, and the platform, as well as many other parts, are shared. However, cosmetic differences, as well as the significantly lowered ground-height of the Perodua Alza, set these two siblings noticeably apart.

Though it’s official price has not been confirmed, the 2022 Toyota Veloz is estimated to have a tag of RM95,000, OTR without insurance.

  • Exterior

A large hexagonal grille with Y-shaped mesh dominates the front of the Toyota Veloz, and this element is flanked by T-shaped accents in chrome that showcase the LED fog lamp surrounds prominently. The headlamps above it feature sequential indicators. At the rear, the Toyota Veloz has the now familiar red stripe horizontally across its rump, just like the Toyota Alza, but below it is a faux skid plate that proclaims its sporty aspirations.

However, unlike the Perodua Alza, or Toyota Avanza of other markets, the wheel arches of the Toyota Veloz protrudes ever so slightly, whereas there are recessed, which again, hints at the Toyota Veloz being a sportier vehicle than the other two siblings.

Three solid colours of Red Metallic, Metallic Bluish Black, and White is available, and for an extra RM1,300, buyers can opt for two two-tone options: Blue Metallic with Black Roof, or Silver Metallic with Black Roof.

    2022 Toyota Veloz Dimensions
    Length4,475 mm
    Width1,775 mm
    Height1,700 mm
    Wheelbase2,750 mm
  • Interior

Inside, the Toyota Veloz is similar to the Perodua Alza, although their air-conditioning vents are different to accommodate the former’s 9-inch Display Audio infotainment system that has a wider aspect ratio, and, impressively, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Perodua Alza only gets wired versions of these two.

Below it is a large open storage area with incorporated Qi wireless charging, which the Perodua Alza does not receive, and behind this area is the electronic parking brake and auto brake hold button, a feature only available on the top specced Perodua Alza.

However, the multifunction steering wheel, and 7-inch TFT digital instrument display is shared with its sibling, albeit with a different logo featured on it, and they have the same cargo volume as well – 137 litres with all seats up, and 498 litres with the third row folded down.

  • Features

Toyota Safety Sense, the suite of active driver safety systems, is available as standard equipment on the sole variant of the Toyota Veloz, and some of the important features that will be included are Pre-collision System, which is an autonomous braking system, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

With the extra 20k pinned onto its price tag, we are certainly expecting features like lane centering assist, lane keeping assist, bling spot monitoring, front departure alert, pedal misapplication control, and a minimum of 6 airbags too coming in at standard equipment.

As for non-standard equipment, a rear digital recorder (aka dashcam for the rear) should be available from the Tech-Up catalogue for RM350.

  • Powertrain

The sole powertrain for the Toyota Veloz is the 2NR-VE 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine mated to a D-CVT. However, unlike Toyota Avanzas of yore, drive is only given to the front wheels. Power figures should be the same as Perodua Alza, with 106 PS (105 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm.

  • Driving Performance

Interestingly, the Toyota Veloz is 45 mm further away from the ground compared to the Perodua Alza, which will change its driving characteristics noticeably. The extra ground clearance will be helpful when the Toyota Veloz goes ever so slightly off the road, and perhaps more confidently over bumps as well, but the lower centre of gravity of the Perodua Alza should give it an edge over the Toyota Veloz around the curvy bits. Still, they are both 7-seaters, and spirited driving is not what they are made for.

  • Ride Comfort

It is almost certain, however, that having that increased ride height of 45 mm will give the occupants of the Toyota Veloz a slightly more comfortable ride. The increased travel of the suspension should allow a better soaking of bumps and undulations, resulting in happier passengers.

  • Fuel Consumption

No official fuel figures are available yet, however, it should not run very far from the fuel consumption figures of the Perodua Alza, which stands at 22 km/l, or 4.5 l/100km.

  • Conclusion

Buyers of sub-100k vehicles are incredibly sensitive to pricing, and rightly so, which makes the extra twenty thousand ringgits of the Toyota Veloz a serious roadblock to the vehicles success. The full specification of the Toyota Veloz is not available yet, and perhaps when it is officially launched, the price tag can be more easily justified. Many would, undoubtedly, prefer the Toyota badge up front compared to the Perodua one, and since the Toyota Veloz is slated to only have a single variant, the single biggest determining factor of its success is going to be its final price tag, as the new Perodua Alza is already so superbly specced.
