After many years of hatchbacks, the Toyota Yaris compact now also has a crossover variant. Called the Toyota Yaris Cross, the TNGA GA-B platform and interior is based on the European Toyota Yaris, with an exterior that focuses on crossover and SUV styling.
In Europe and Japan where these little crossovers and SUVs are popular, the Toyota Yaris Cross goes up against the likes of Ford Ecosport, Peugeot 2008, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, Citroen C3 Aircross, Volkswagen T-Roc, Hyundai Kona and even the Honda HR-V.
On the exterior, the Toyota Yaris Cross certainly is compact, just slightly larger than a Perodua Myvi and Perodua Ativa. Similar to larger crossovers, it features full thick cladding at the lower portion of the body evoking the RAV4, as well as a raised ground clearance of 170 mm.
Key exterior features include high mounted automatic on-off LED headlights, DRLs, auto-folding mirrors, LED tail lamps with black bezels and a âYaris Crossâ brand marking on the rugged side claddings.
Unlike most of the rivals, 18-inch wheels are available to the range-topping Toyota Yaris Cross. The upper variants also add a two-tone finish with black roof and a hands-free powered tailgate, features which are usually available only in larger crossovers and SUVs.

The interior of the Toyota Yaris Cross is based heavily on the compact hatchback but revised to be higher to match the taller vehicle. Everything is laid out logically as you expect from a Toyota. The chunky grip-type front door handles are also designed to better communicate the Yaris line of vehicles. The infotainment system is a free-standing unit with a touch screen display and integrated physical buttons and knobs.
The instrument cluster in the Toyota Yaris Cross is a clever mix of technology to appear fully digital. There are no needle-dials, but bar graphs and a large digital speedometer, with a decently sized 4.2-inch multi-information display nestled between the rings. Range-topping variants have a 7-inch TFT screen, displaying similar content with the Toyota Corolla/RAV4 cluster. Drivers are also aided by a head-up display.
The cabin of the Toyota Yaris Cross is quite practical with well-designed storage spaces such as the tray immediately below the air vents, a deep section ahead of the shift lever, deep cup holders plus door pockets on all four doors. We felt that the opening aperture of the rear door is smaller than average though, which could be a challenge to place child seats.
Legroom for rear occupants is average given the compact dimension of the Toyota Yaris Cross. The rear seat has an unseen-in-segment 40-20-40 split-folding, adding versatility. Folding down the centre 20-piece makes that section a make-shift armrest for the rear occupants plus space for two cups or beverages. Boot space is also above-average at 390 litres.
A lightweight and foldable tonneau cover means making space for taller or bulkier objects is incredibly convenient in the Toyota Yaris Cross. A dual-level and split-piece deck board further increase the utility of the Toyota Yaris Cross.
Thanks to the fitment of the electronic parking brake (EPB) with auto hold, the lower console feels more spacious too.
The Toyota Yaris Cross comes standard with 6 normally placed airbags, as well as two central airbags which are the new norm in Euro NCAP 2020. The central airbags protect the driver and front passenger from knocking into each other should an unfortunate impact from the side occurs.
Meanwhile, Toyota Safety Sense with increased activation is included in the range-topping Toyota Yaris Cross. Apart from auto braking in straight lines, the Pre-collision system under the Intersection Turning Assist also brakes should there be a risk of collision into an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian while making right turns.
Other driver assist systems are dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Toyota Yaris Cross is only assisted by a rearview camera.
The seats are upholstered in leather, while features from the Toyota Yaris hatchback such as automatic air-conditioning, smart entry and start, multi-function steering wheel and USB charging port. Thanks to the fitment of the electronic parking brake (EPB) with auto hold, the lower console feels more spacious too.
Various specific vehicle information is also displayed on the infotainment system, such as the hybrid power flow and driving information. The sound is meanwhile pumped out to a six-speaker setup. Similar to other Toyota models, the sound quality from the Toyota Yaris Cross is above average.
Power outputs for the Toyota Yaris Cross 1.5 are 120 PS at 6,600 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm, while the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid has a combined system output of 116 PS from both the engine and electric motors. Separately, the fuel consumption optimized 1.5-litre engine dishes out 92 PS at a lower 5,500 rpm and 121 Nm of torque, while the electric motor pushes even higher torque levels of 141 Nm and a maximum output of 80 PS.
Self-charging technology means one cannot plug the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid into a power socket to extend the electric range, which is typically under 2 km in our tropical climate. A lithium-ion battery pack is placed under the rear seat, thus making the boot even more spacious
The hybrid system in the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid meanwhile has the complex power split device and electronic CVT to handle various operations of just electric motor propulsion (EV mode), charging of the battery as well as blending the engine and electric motor outputs (Full hybrid).
The hybrid powertrain also works well and is expected from the Toyota Hybrid System. Full throttle application means holding at the redline but this is not a typical user profile of an urban hybrid crossover. As such, in town and even highway driving, the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid hums along quite silently as the engine tends to switch off frequently or at least operation in low engine rpms.
For the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid, the transition between electric-only and when the engine starts is nearly unfelt, such is the progress of Toyotaâs fourth-generation hybrid system. A drive mode switch allows for Power, Eco or normal powertrain modes.
Interior is genuinely just nice for us with an Asian physique. The Toyota Yaris Cross is genuinely targeted to young couples or singles, and as such, the lack of accommodation is not immediately felt or obvious. The weakness of the Toyota Yaris Cross would be its price. Being based in Europe and Japan, the vehicle is not as cost-effective to manufacture as it would be in ASEAN.
