My suggestion would be of a SUV, the DC winter driving could be challenging on icy day. DC drivers are not well accustomed to driving in winters leading to a lot of accidents, even the schools are closed on occasions. It’s not as bad as like Atlanta but its bad. DC could have as much as 4–6 weeks of adverse driving conditions during winters. Nowadays with improved technology there is not much difference in fuel economy, maintenance costs and reliability. Moreover, you’ll always enjoy the heightened safety and control of a SUV. I live in northern Canada having seen the best of x-drives or 4matics down the drain and simple 2WD living their way through winters. You can look for hybrids if you’re looking for better fuel economy. Depending on affordability and family size you can choose the best fit for you, All are top safety picks and rated 5-stars by IIHS. Economy Compact SUV: Mazda CX-3, Chevy Trax, Buick Encore All priced around $20–25k with around 30 mpg Economy Midsize SUV: Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Rav4 All priced around $25–30k with around 25–28 mpg Economy Full size SUV: Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Highlander All priced around $35–40k with 22–25mpg Luxury Compact SUV: BMW X1, Lexus NX, Mercedes GLA All priced around $35–40k with 25–28 mpg Luxury Midsize SUV: Audi Q5, Lexus RX, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes GLE All priced around $50k with 25 mpg, Lexus RX is rated at 28–30 mpg Luxury Full size SUV: Audi Q7, Acura MDX, Volvo XC90 All priced around $60k with 22–25mpg Hybrid options: Toyota Rav4, Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX, Lexus NX, Volvo XC90, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLE The listed hybrid versions cost $5–15k more and can give 10–20 mpge improvement on fuel economy, so you can do the math and find the one that best fits your requirement. For the insurance, my experience with Geico has been good but its better to evaluate as it varies a lot based on personal situation, location and driving experience. Hope it helps!
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio,: Review The Stelvio is the Alfa's first SUV and it comes at the time when SUV sales are at the peak. The Stelvio is ready to compete with its rivals like Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, and Porsche Macan. Starting at a price of $42,195 and going up to $46,695, the Stelvio is a well-equipped SUV in its segment. The Stelvio comes with a 2.0-litre I-4 motor which produces 280 bhp and 306 lb-ft of torque. With excellent power and agility, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is better than other luxury compact SUVs. However, the interiors lack the build quality you get from some of its German rivals. Engine: The Stelvio has the most powerful engine amongst the cars compared here. The Stelvio comes with a 2.0-litre intercooled turbocharged I-4 engine which is standard on all the trims. It generates 280 bhp of power and 306 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission shuffles the torque to all four wheels. Fuel Economy: The ,2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, delivers impressive fuel economy considering the power on tap. It gets 22 mpg on city and 28 mpg on the highway. With the combined economy of 24 mpg, the Stelvio’s engine is best amongst its rivals. The Macan and Q5 trails behind by having 20/25 mpg on city/highway and the combined economy of 22 mpg. Exterior: The Stelvio is 184.6 inches in length and 74.9 inches in width. The height is 66 inches which makes it the highest amongst its rivals. It has got a good ground clearance of 8.1 inches. The wheelbase of 111 inches provides a good and comfortable cabin space. So lastly it can be said that, Alfa Romeo has a winner in hands. It combines Italian design flair, exhilarating engine and engaging handling in a single practical package in the form of an SUV. However, there are some caveats. The Stelvio falls behind the more established German rivals in terms of interior quality and practicality. 2018 Audi Q5 Review: The Q5 has always been Audi's bestseller since its release in 2009, and now it matures into its second generation for the year 2018. With a better design, added power, better efficiency, and a whole new suit of techs, the 2018 Audi Q5 has refined its recipe for success. Although Q5 has had some serious competition in the luxury compact SUV segment in the past decade, the second generation Q5 aims to stand out with its perfect balance of comfort, performance, and capability. Engine: The 2018 Audi Q5 comes standard with a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Audi's Quattro AWD is also standard. Although the Q5 still uses a four-cylinder engine, it is comparably more powerful than its predecessors. The gearshifts depend on your driving mode and it remains smooth and responsive optimizing the particular drive mode. The new engine produces 252 HP and 273 pound-feet of torque as compared to the 220 HP and 258 pound-feet of torque produced by previous Q5 engines. This engine already does duty in several other cars from Audi like the A4. As we have already seen in those cars, the engine is quite potent and delivers power in a very linear manner and being refined at it as well. There is a bit of turbo lag at lower RPMs but it picks up the pace quite easily and gets going pretty smooth. Fuel Economy: The Q5 has one of the most fuel-efficient engines in the competition. The fuel economy for 2018 Audi Q5 has increased from the Q5s of yesteryear. One of the reasons this year’s Audi has a better fuel economy is the addition of Quattro AWD with ultra tech. The ‘ultra tech’ refers to the drivetrain’s ability to decouple the rear wheels and provide all power to the front wheels when an AWD is not needed. This improves the fuel economy as not wasting power on all wheels when maximum traction is not needed. Exterior: The Q5 gets a complete makeover for the year 2018. Most of the changes are noticeable inside the cabin, while the exterior only gets slight refinements. The most noticeable change is the addition of two sharp creases on the bonnet. Such creases were not possible with the earlier tech, but now they are here to display a more powerful look. The overall design is much sharper than the previous rounded off design. The design is more evolutionary than revolutionary but still remains a handsome car. Finally we can summarize that, The Audi Q5 is a beautifully finished SUV in its segment with a long list of standard features. This car has comparatively low power and torque as compared to the Stelvio but in terms of interior and cabin space, it is better. So if you need a sensible car, the Q5 makes sense but if you desire an SUV that’s entertaining to drive and to look at, the Stelvio is a clear winner.
The 2020 ,Audi Q5, is a ,great, choice, as evidenced by its top-tier finish in our luxury compact ,SUV, rankings. It delivers enjoyable performance and a comfortable ride, and it has a spacious, upscale interior. There are plenty of easy-to-use tech features as well. Frankly speaking forget the good part, there are not many alternatives for Land Rovers especially NONE for the Range Rovers. There are various kinds of alternatives cheaper, expensive, more powerful, technology laden, luxurious or “reliable” alternatives (than the 2010 or earlier) but nothing compares to a single packaged products (or models) from Land Rover. The Discovery, LR4, RR Sports or the Range Rover are unique and leaders in the segment they cater. LR2 and Defenders aren’t being built anymore so they are out of equation and RR Evoque doesn’t share the same genes (Don’t know why they even built it!) There are some cheaper alternatives from Jeep and Toyota (Land Cruiser), I can’t even think of any other name worthy of a mention in this landscape!. On the higher side (or the expensive side), G-Class is a worthy competitor to the Range Rovers - (Sports/Full-Size) on off-roads and Porsche Cayenne competes on-road. So if we go Model by Model: LR Discovery,: The main competition is BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC and any other luxury compact SUV in 40–50k range. Some of them are ahead in terms of on-board technology and with additional option packages but they lag behind in term of off-road capabilities, whatever their advertisement says! In term of size its a bit bigger and more spacious with an option for 7 seating as well. The power n performance are similar though some brands have V6 which come with more power but at a higher cost. The upcoming 2017 LR Discovery with more power (V6) and greater off-roading capabilities (Defender specs), will lead the pack in near future. LR4,: The highest offering in Land Rover sub-banner, again the off-roading capabilities and sturdiness are the differentiating factors from the competition with likes of Mercedes ML/GLE, BMW X5, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus RX etc. In all other terms (convenience, luxury, technology) all these vehicles are pretty similar, though they all have V8 options which was discontinued in the LR4’s in 2014. It is one of the models which is awaiting a redesign, it has been with the same exterior for 8–9 years. RR Evoque:, It’s the cheap way to get “Range Rover” badge on the hood, though its neither worthy nor comparative to have the RR name added to it. Yes, it does have better quality of interiors and a bit more technology compared to a Land Rover offering but it’s not in line with the image associated with the company. It’s just a shrewd attempt to sell the brand logo to urban population with a limited budget and looking only to associate with the brand, its very similar option like Merc GLA, BMW X1, Audi Q3 etc. However its one of the best looking Compact-UV vehicles and drives like a Mini-Cooper, loaded with great convenience and luxury features. This one offering could actually have a viable superior alternative depending on options/packages and personal preferences. The Range Rover products which just don’t have any competition… especially with the capabilities offered in the price range ($100–150k) RR Sports: ,The highest selling model under the RR badge, it’s the perfect combo of on-road and off-road SUVs packed with the best in-class luxury, convenience, technology and utility features. The primary competition being the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE/GLS/G-Class, Lexus GX/LX etc The $180k Cayenne Turbo S is a bit faster (0–60 mph in 4 secs, 570 hp/590 t) than the $120K RRS-SVR (4.3 - 550/502), but gets asthma while off-roading. The G-class (G63 - 563 hp/561 t) has a bigger engine and price tag ($150K) yet a bit slower(5.2 secs), has rugged-macho looks but lacks basic hygiene while driving on interstates which requires comfort and convenience. The BMW X5 (50i - 445 hp/480 t) is 80% match of the RR sports performance (SC/SVR), X5M (567hp/553t) is faster (4 secs) and has more power (575hp) but that’s it, just like Porsche its left behind in off-roading and Lexus GX is poor man’s RR Sports (I don’t know why they even make it). The Lexus LX is better on reliability coz of its lower specifications and sub-par performance, the only competition it offers is by being in similar price range! RR-Sports is the most complete offering in SUV’s, with the best of all worlds in one vehicle. I would suggest everyone to check the latest reliability and loyalty score for Range Rovers. Range Rover:, As Car & Driver says, its the pinnacle of luxury SUVs. In a recent Range Rover promotional event for its Sentinel edition, its experience was said to be flying business class in a F-22 Raptor. Priced between 100–150k (except for SVA or custom built) its one of the most luxurious vehicle with best in-class capabilities and performance. For the size, in-vehicle comfort and drive-ability its hard to imagine how Land Rover embedded the exceptional off-roading capability and driving dynamics to it. Its better than Cayennes, GLSs/GLEs/Gs, Lexus LX for the same reasons mentioned above plus the exquisite interiors which are comparable only to Bentley/Aston Martin offerings double the price of a Range Rover. In spite of this, its a daily driver without the sophistication associated to the premium luxury segment. There is no competition anywhere in sight - present or future (we’re not counting >$300K priced Bentayga, Urus or Cullinan) Someone mentioned a Land Cruiser as an alternative to a Range Rover while shopping for a vehicle couple of months ago, I flew 1500 miles from Canada to Denver (No LCs sold in Canada) only to find out its a refined version of Toyota Sequoia. In fact Toyota sells you the same engine (5.7 L V8, 381 hp/ 401 T) for $50K in Sequoia, $90k in Land Cruiser and $100k in Lexus LX570. The only addition compared to Sequoia being the driving modes and differentials! My inference of those suggesting a Land Cruiser or Lexus as an alternative was that they never sat in a Range Rover, forget about driving one. So In conclusion, Yes there are some alternatives to starter or cheaper Land Rovers depending on one’s use and expectation out of their vehicle, In general you can find comparably better equipped vehicles by spending a little extra but not when it comes to off-roading abilities and sturdiness. In the higher price ranges, the Range Rovers are simple unbeatable!
It all depends what you need and how much you can afford to buy. SUVs price start from around $15k to $200k. I consider this for USA market: Tesla Model X is most modern SUV. Jeep Grand Cherokee best off-road SUV. Audi Q5 in Luxury Compact SUVs … ,

Proven since 2015. No power train mechanical issue. This 4 cylinder Turbo Charge Engine is one of the best in the world. (Renault-Nissan) . Yes, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is a great SUV. Its well-designed, well-appointed interior is one of the best out there, and it’s made better by the two rows of adult-friendly seats and a long list of standard features. There are several turbocharged engine options – all of which provide plenty of power – and the GLC delivers a smooth ride and composed handling. The GLC's spacious seating, solid safety scores, and ample critical praise led us to deem it a finalist for our ,2018 Best Luxury Compact SUV for Families, award. Should I Buy the Mercedes-Benz GLC? It’s an excellent choice if you want a luxury compact SUV. This Mercedes isn’t a class leader in every category; there are rivals that are more athletic, more fuel-efficient, or have more cargo space. However, the GLC isn’t below average in any respect, and it still ranks among the class leaders in many areas. If you are considering other options, you might want to check out the ,BMW X3, or the ,Lexus NX,. The X3 can’t match the GLC’s opulent interior, but it’s still plenty nice, and it’s the more athletic SUV. The Lexus NX isn’t quite as nice or athletic as the Mercedes, but it’s still a good vehicle and has a much lower starting price. The Final Call: (Best cabin finish) In production since 2015. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC deserves its lofty spot in our luxury compact SUV rankings. This car has no real flaws. Though some rivals deliver better performance, the GLC provides plenty of athleticism, and few – if any – other vehicles in the class can match the GLC’s interior quality. If you’re shopping for a luxury compact SUV, this is a great choice. https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/audi/q5
