Never. The i8 is a high-performance two seater mid-engined coupe. Those kinds of cars don't sell for $30k. Want to be eco friendly for that money? There's Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt and Chevrolet Bolt, or, in the end, Tesla Model 3.
No not really. The i8 has petrol engine. Is only just above 300 hp. Is two seater, I would not want to sit in the back seats. Does not have luggage space. It sure looks great, but this isn't comparable to Tesla.

The R8 and the Tesla Model S (which I guess is the subject of the question) have very little in common. They both have very quick 0-60 times and they cost a lot, but that's about it. The R8 is a high-end, two-seater sports car. It has a big V8 engine which uses lots of gas. It can drive around a racetrack very fast and it's a great car for showing off in, but it doesn't have much luggage space and its utility as an everyday car is limited. If you have a family or ever need to transport any bulky equipment, you'll need another vehicle as well. The Tesla is an executive saloon which seats five in comfort and can accommodate seven if two of the occupants are small children. It's a nice car but nothing like as flash as the R8. It's all electric so it uses no gas at all. It has a large amount of luggage space and is practical for long journeys provided you are within the Supercharger network. The Tesla is useless on a racetrack because it can't be driven flat out for very long before it starts limiting the power output. It's a road car not a race car. The choice between the two is a false dichotomy because they don't compete with each other. The R8 is up against cars like the Porsche 918 Spyder and the BMW i8, while the Tesla competes against the Porsche Panamera and the BMW 7-series. If you are single and want a sports car to show off in or drive on a track, get the Audi. If you want to carry other people or things in your car and can't afford to buy both, get the Tesla.
Concept cars serve two purposes: Market research: Often concept cars contain lots of styling ideas. When they are put on display at exhibitions and public fairs, the visitors are asked for their opinions. Often a concept car describes a certain path of design, which can later be found in a mass production car in a less exaggerated form. Just one example: In 1999 Citroen introduced the Citroen C3 Air This prototype was based on a Citroen C3 and featured a modular top. You can convert a four seater saloon into an open spider in several steps. The car got raving reviews, and in 2002 Citroen launched the C3 Pluriel: The mass production car shared no parts with the prototype, so the prototype was more or less for market research. 2. Media coverage: Many concept cars are built once, and often it is not too expensive to build a concept car, because they do not have to be refined in detail. Sometimes concept cars are complete mockups and do not drive. However, media worldwide show these cars in their stories. Sometimes car manufacturers collaborate with movie studios. The first BMW i8 concept car had an appearance in an „Misssion Impossible“ movie, Audi made a future TT concept car for „I, Robot“ with Will Smith, and Aston Martin made a concept car for the latest James Bond movie „Spectre“. These cars get enormous public attention - and they are perfect advertising for the manufacturer. Maybe you remember the 007 movie „The Spy Who Loved Me“. In this movie James Bond drives a white Lotus Esprit S1, which is able to dive like a submarine: The movie production company made a contract with Lotus, and the car maker provided four cars. Two cars were ordinary cars which could drive on the road (one was blown up by a self destruction mechanism), the third car was able to drive and to swim. And the fourth car was able to act as a submarine. Of course it did not contain a pressurized, waterproof passenger compartment. It was operated by a scuba diver. Lotus did not get any payment for that. And later I read in an interview that it was cheaper for them to deliver the four cars than to buy a centerfold ad in the „Times“.
For practicality purposes. A BMW I8 is two door four seater coupe. Whereas 520d is a four door four seater sedan. In terms of carrying 4 people comfortably, 520d would be way ahead of the I8. The rear seats in a coupe are always more cramped and are difficult to get into. Hence, I8 would make sense for a young adult, but wouldnt make any sense to an older person, who would prefer being chauffeured in comfort over speed.
They don’t. I don’t know why you think they’re looking weird, because I find they’re looking quite normal. Let’s take, for example, one of the most popular electric cars in the world, the Nissan Leaf: Maybe it’s me, but I personally think they look quite normal, except maybe the fact that they don’t have calender in the front, since they don’t need a radiator. You may think to the Mitsubishi i-Miev, which is A BIT UGLY, I AGREE: (My uncle’s i-Miev) But they are just an electric version of the Mitsubishi i: Next stop, the Chevrolet Volt, quite known but looking pretty much normal: (First gen) (Second gen) I’m sure you thought to the queen (of normal people) of hybrids, the fourth gen Prius, with its lightly futuristic look: But if you’re looking to the third gen, it looks normal: The Zoé, from Renault? A bit strange, I agree, but that’s more because of designers: And what about the electric Kangoo? Looking like the normal one: We then pass to more luxurious models, like the first Tesla, not really known from the public, but quite known in petrolhead’s world, the Roadster: Based on the Lotus Elise’s chassis; pretty cool, isn’t it? Let’s pass to the more known, Model S, still from Tesla: I personally think to a Maserati Ghibli/GranTurismo each time I see one, so that’s a thumbs up to Elon Musk. And now, the queens of hybrid cars (not gonna talk about protos, LMP1/LMP2 hybrids for example, as they all look strange to a non-car guy). I shall present you the Ferrari LaFerrari (I think they ran out of names this time…): Maybe looking strange, not my favorite Ferrari, for sure (being a true Ferrari aficionado), but comparing to the (petrol-powered) Enzo, produced a decade ago, that’s not that much: Then, in my top, at the second position of the queens of hybrids, I have the truly amazing (but a bit overrated, to my opinion) McLaren P1: Stunning, no? And, at my first position, the true Queen of hybrid cars, the beautiful, the handsome, the superb, Porsche 918 (successor, in numbers, of the AMAZING Porsche 917): Still thinking they look weird? Edit: There wasn’t a description when I wrote the answer, and you talked about the BMW i3: And the superb BMW i8: I agree with you on a point: they look like concept cars. And that’s what BMW wanted. Because I remind you that the starting price of the i3 is 45 300$ CAN, and the starting price of the i8 is 150 000$ CAN. And I remind you, that the i3 is a 2-seater (don’t think to bring 4 people in this, you will need to amputate the legs of the people seated back), with no room, for more than the Leaf, the i-Miev or the Bolt, all more practical than the i3. And when you pay that much for an electric car like this, you want to scream to people “LOOK AT HOW ECOLOGIC I AM”. As for the i8, it’s a pure two-seater, and you WANT people to look at you. I think also that the i8 reminds me a bit the amazing M1: And that they are both close from their concepts, the i3 Concept and the i8 Concept: I would also like to mention the Cadillac ELR: Which simply continues on the way of angular design, from Cadillac. Example with the CLS: And the sporty XLR: So, if you want a normal car, you will not need a concept-ish design. That’s all.
The BMW is a hybrid car, uses fuel. For my needs, Model S fits me best, I need a large car. I think for driving that Model 3 is probably best but I love my Model S. The BMW i8 is pretty much just a two seater that looks good, not my cup of tea and both Tesla cars will have no problems leaving the BMW behind in a cloud of dust.
Haven’t ever smoked or consumed any sort of alcohol & drugs. Started my first venture with mere INR 500 in pocket. Today I have reached a stage where I spend same amount several times in a month for coffee in Starbucks. I had no connects in stock markets neither a background, yet have made out a living out of it. I wanted to be a dropout, but my highly educated parents and concerned mother crushed that dream of mine. I was compelled to do an MBA. I have lost some hairs lately. Initially that used to bother me a bit,but after I realized that I need to accept the way I am,I am more comfortable being me. So far in my life I have received more than 18 proposes from girls with the last one being in this April. Yet,interestingly I am single! (At the moment) Yes,these are genuine proposes & I have never used those trending apps to allure someone. I am a big time foodie. People close to me are envious of the exotic food stuffs I keep trying almost every other day. Between BMW i8 and Audi R8, I like I8 because of the frameless scissor doors & the classic two seater definitely gives a racing car feel. I started reading very late in my life. In fact it was after my graduation that I started reading a little which gradually became a habit. I have missed deals worth lakhs just to attend my friend’s marriage or to meet them when they need me. Yes, they matter to me.
