TL;DR - although we have an increasing division between rich and poor, and there's a focus on general inequality coupled with conspicuous consumption, The United States is still only about 100 years into the strongest car culture in the world, and the love for vehicles seems to outweigh any negative perceptions or connotations associated with the old mentality of hating on the 1980's guy with a Porsche Boxster. Point being... people love cars, the shinier and fancier, the better. It seems to make people regress into giddy boyhood. ---------------------- I am answering this because I am very ambivalent. No less than 3 years ago I started a quora thread "Why would anyone buy a luxury car?". Now I have one. I had a lot of conflict about it, what it says about me, how I am perceived, what it says about our economy and how people spend money, etc etc. I drove a Jeep Wrangler for 20 years. I saved up for the last 10+ and just bought a Jaguar F-Type. It's a bit unknown, and therefore under the radar. I also got a color and finishes that are less gaudy, audacious, not chromey, etc. Pic below. I commute.. A LOT. I drive.. A LOT. I love driving, I love manual transmissions, and so I found the one car I loved... as I really didn't care about most cars, and definitely hate spendy cars. But I saved up, loved this car, so I bought it. The base MSRP for the car is likely at least 50% that of a better known supercar.... so it's image is likely flashier than the cost. It's less than a Tesla, and many BMW, etc. It's only slightly more than a maxed out Subaru WRX.... but that's my perspective. I 100% assumed there would be snide looks, or anger based jealousy or something. The Tesla, in our area, seems to be the new 1980's Porsche, for the pretentious guy wearing $800 jeans that thinks he's "made it and arrived".... my Jeep body shop said she had scene vandalism damage on Teslas, IE jealous or angry crimes of opportunity, IE 1% vs 99% stuff. Since owning this car, here's what I've noticed: a) most people leave you alone, but see it and smile. If I am in earshot, I can hear guys typically saying to their gals, "Wow great car" but without jealousy, just enjoyment. b) People will straight up just walk up to me and say "I love your car" and then start talking about the car culture they grew up in, their Jaguar story, etc. It's charming, and I love it. It reinforces how much of a special and fascinating car culture we have in the US. c) Guys in Ford Festiva or Honda's with glued on wings or spoilers just love cars. They love their car, they love my car. Whenever I see these types on the road, we just thumbs up and smile, knowing we love what we're doing, and it isn't a competition. When it comes to people enjoying my car, it's typically the gear heads, speed freaks, or auto lovers that "get" and "know" what this car is, and why it is special. That is VERY VERY cool, and something I wasn't expecting.... there's a certain point it isn't "Ferrari vs Lambo". There's a certain point it's "PEOPLE WHO REALLY LOVE TO DRIVE" vs "people who hate driving". It's a kinship and community, and it's very much like feeling part of something. I would say this is 100% the crux of your question... it isn't "mid range car person reacts to luxury supercar". It is more "people that like cars" and "people that don't care" than anything else. d) Guys in Camaro, Charger, or Challengers want to race. Badly. Not sure why. I don't race... I am a touring guy. =) e) Because people who buy nice cars do research, presumably, and because of the amount of nice cars in the area.... the only negativity I feel is from this class of car owners. Of course, Bentley people are in a different class. Rolls people are old school but not impervious to seeing other brands. Lambo and Ferrari guys are also sort of "internal" and don't give a shit about what you are driving... everything from a Hyundai to a Jag is simply a grey spot in their way. f) I rarely get asked about it, and most of the time I am told about it. =) g) This car looks like a Transformer crossed with something from GI Joe. I wasn't hoping for the attention, but anyone thinking that women will be looking at your car are WAY off. Women don't care unless they are driving in the car... for them it's more about that rare feeling of power and torque. If it's about gender, it simply goes back to whether people like cars and driving, or do not. The hilarious truth about this car is that men turn into little adorable boys, and the most compliments I think I've gotten directly are from younger guys at gas stations, etc. It's widely known to have the best exhaust system, so I get teenagers asking me to gun it "although I know it is immature". LOL The most reactions are from men that feel like little kids, again. h) But when you are talking about luxury car owners like Maserati, Tesla, DEFINITELY Porsche, and 100% BMW, Audi, Lexus, and Infiniti people.... these people stare at my car with daggers. I suspect it's because it's easily one of the top 5 most beautiful cars on the road, and it's probably the same price or less than the BMW m4-6 or Audi a or s 6 or 7. I think there's a buyer's remorse when they see my car, IE a realization they spent much more for potentially less. This is anecdotal and of course, my perception. I bought this car for me, to enjoy commuting in. I didn't realize it was classified as a super car, nor was I really aware that I would get "looks", which was completely naive of me. I live in an area where Bentley, Aston Martin, Tesla, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rols are ALL OVER THE ROAD. It's absurd. Maybe that desensitized me.... I've talked to local car owners about it, and they say when you get out of the SF Bay Area, it's a whole different ball game, and you need to plan extra time at stops because people are engaged and will talk about it to you.... so I am planning on that during my Glacier / Yellowstone / Grand Teton NPS trip this summer.... =) I would love to know people's experience in rural areas... I imagine a fancy car is like seeing a UFO fly through town?
BMW M4 is simply a renaming of an old icon. Essentially the BMW M4 isn’t targeting any new segment, they’re organizing their badging based on coupes vs. sedans. When you say M3 now, you know it’s a Sedan, instead of saying “I have an M3” and your friend replying with “Sedan or Coupe?” you know odd numbers are sedans 1,3,5,7 and even numbers are coupes 2,4,6 and soon to be 8 series. The bigger question is “what segment is BMW targeting with their Gran Coupe’s”? They first introduced the gran coupe in the 6 series around 2012. Coupe body with two extra doors shoe-horned into the back. Admittedly, I love the look of the Gran Coupes, but they lack functionality. The Gran Turismo variants, on the other hand, have an incredibly versatile interior but appear as if the exterior design was aborted mid development. Strictly my opinion, though.
If one were to mention iconic automotive rivalry, none can quite beat the ongoing back and forth competition of attrition between ,Mercedes, vs ,BMW,. They are both paragons of luxury lifestyle vehicles in their own rights. Cars They Make Reliability Design Driving Halo Cars Verdict However, the ongoing question lingers regardless. Which is better, BMW or Mercedes? This ongoing ‘feud’ of Mercedes VS BMW is, in my opinion, senseless. But if you’re still thinking to yourself, what is better, Mercedes or BMW, here’s a bit of an overly simplified view into the world of German automotive rivalry. BMW VS MERCEDES: CARS THEY MAKE As of now, if you want some sort of car from both of these automotive giants, it’s likely that they already have one up for sale. There’s really no segment that both BMW and Mercedes haven’t delved into, and it has resulted in some rather distinctive models in the past. Both of them boasts a wildly eclectic genre of cars that covers segments in the most saturated market to the most niche, specialised select group of people. BMW makes the BMW X1, a front-wheel-drive compact SUV that’s available with a 1.5-litre economy-conscious diesel engine, yet they also recently brought back the 8-series moniker with the ,M850i xDrive,, an all-wheel-drive 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged grand tourer that sprints to 62 mph from a standstill in 4 seconds. It’s ditto with Mercedes-Benz. They make the ,B-Class,, a subcompact MPV built to represent premium pragmatism. Yet they also make the ,AMG-GT,, a firebreathing Nürburgring specialist. From this perspective then, BMW and Mercedes are very much at a tie. However, it’s worth noting that while Mercedes does make the ,X-Class,, a luxury pickup truck, BMW doesn’t have an answer to it, and will likely remain so for years to come. BMW VS MERCEDES: RELIABILITY If there’s something that both marques are not good at though, it’s the fact that they’re both rather unsatisfactory when it comes to reliability some might say. Modern cars are complex, and modern ,luxury cars, even more so. The honest truth is that if you’re getting into a Mercedes or BMW, you’re expected to be able to keep up with the hefty maintenance and constant demand for workshop attention. Some may say that Mercedes or BMW was the benchmark for reliability, but as they introduced a multitude of new technologies and amenities to keep up with public demand, it meant more potential for things to break. And these lacking reliability index is reflected in Consumer Reports, where Mercedes and BMW both struggle to match favourable ratings. If dependability is what you seek, perhaps take a look at the Japanese rather than the German luxury automakers. BMW VS MERCEDES: DESIGN In terms of overall aesthetics, both brands follow their own distinctive design philosophy. While BMW emphasises static dynamicism, Mercedes prioritises classy look with immense road presence. This is represented in their flagship bread and butter luxury model, the ,BMW 7-Series, and ,Mercedes-Benz S-Class,. The S-Class is svelte and suave, with a stance that’s appropriate for a luxury sedan. While the 7-Series looks sharp and defined. Move onto the interior though, and there’s a big disparity here. Having been in some of the latest Mercedes before, I’d say that Mercedes is class-leading in terms of interior right now, and it’s apparent why. The latest BMW interior is definitely up there too with the best of them, it’s just Mercedes is exemplary when it comes to a premium feeling cabin. Take a look at their latest A-Class, and the execution is just sublime, and nothing seemingly indicates that it’s only an entry-level Mercedes. BMW VS MERCEDES: DRIVING Performance-wise, both manufacturers have it close with their performance-imbued models. Courtesy to their performance subdivision, both of them has presented the world with some truly intriguing creations. Both manufacturers have their own performance division that brews up concoctions of performance-endowed civilian models, such as the ,BMW M4, and Mercedes-Benz ,C63 AMG,. Regardless, even with the models in their normal sensible guise, they certainly won’t leave you longing for more vigour. BMW VS MERCEDES: HALO CARS Here’s one for the twelve-year-old that’s concealed within all of us. Which brand comes up with the best halo car? Of course, the ultimate BMW or Mercedes isn’t accessible to many of us, but it can impact a manufacturer’s brand perception. Right now though there’s really nothing terrific from either side thus far. For BMW, it’s arguably the ,i8,, a hundred grand worth of brilliantly engineered hybrid mid-engine grand tourer. For Mercedes, it’s eminently the AMG GTR, a firebreathing record-setting track monster most famously seen in green. On the front of the grin-factor, the i8 would have trouble topping the AMG GTR. What if we instead take a page out of their history? Both sides have come out with some pretty incredible models, mostly homologation specials, that I’d struggle to pick between. BMW has the ,3.0 CSL,, the ,E46 M3,, M1, Z8, E30 M3 Evolution II, etc. Right now, they also have the ,M4 GTS, that’s worthy of note. Mercedes touts the ,SLR McLaren,, CLK DTM AMG, CLK GTR, SLS AMG, 300 SEL 6.3, 190E 2.5-16 Cosworth, SL ‘Pagoda’, the SL ‘Gullwing’ and the upcoming ,Mercedes-AMG Project One,. All very attractive proposition. It’s very subjective, but Mercedes has indeed introduced more prominent poster child in the past. For me though, I still reckon the 3.0 CSL takes the cake, simply because it boasts an impressive history with a cool look, and it’s not entirely out of the picture that one could own a BMW E9 which still looks like the 3.0 CSL. BOTTOM LINE? With all that said, here’s why the comparison makes little sense. BMW and Mercedes-Benz actually make different types of luxury vehicles. BMW puts more priority on sportiness, while Mercedes stress more on smoothness and refinement. And both manufacturers have built up their own ardent fanbase over time, with a cult following on both sides. Chances are that it’s the brand and make that actually draws the buyers in, rather than the vehicle’s actual value. That said if you have the money to spend on either a BMW or Mercedes, it’s very hard to go wrong with any model in their range nowadays. But it’s a general rule of thumb that if you want something sportier, stick to BMW, but if you want something premium and classy, Mercedes is the way to go.,
