I’m interpreting “can” to mean “is it possible” Indeed it is possible, why not, with the ready availability of GPS, which can advise “you are over the speed limit”, there’s no reason that speed limitation couldn’t be integrated into your adaptive cruise control circuitry, anti collision, and braking systems in a modern car. A more appropriate question is “would it be a good idea?” Everything we do is being dumbed down, and every day, I encounter drivers who ought not to be allowed out on the road. The less practical experience they have of driving, hazard awareness and risk management, the poorer their skills will be. I’d rather see obligatory regular retesting of drivers at 3 or 5 year intervals. Then we’d have fewer accidents, few of which are CAUSED by speed. They are EXACERBATED by speed, in that a high speed collision causes more damage to property and bodies than a slow speed one does, and a stationary vehicle seldom hurt anyone… Older drivers seem not to be responsible for many accidents in the UK, but make the news big time if they are… Test everyone at intervals, get them off the road if they’re incompetent, irrespective of age! Tell me why, someone… (I have my own theory, but am open to others’ opinions…) Let’s have systems that prevent slow drivers barging into lines of fast moving traffic, then holding those lines up for mile after mile, prevent drivers from driving way under the speed limit out of town, then speeding up in the “safety” of electrically lit streets and clearly marked verges, where they put pedestrians and domestic pets (cats, say) at risk… Let’s have systems that prevent people reversing blind out of their driveways into the path of incoming traffic, holding everyone else up, then bumbling down the road slowly, or barging into a line of traffic, only to turn right (in the UK) or left (elsewhere) a few yards up the road, holding up the traffic he’s just barged into because oncoming traffic prevents the turn… Forget the technological answers to “Road Safety” IMPROVE PEOPLE! TLDR? Sorry for shouting, it’s a subject close to my heart. I enjoy driving, I’m a member of an advanced driving organization, and believe we all have a responsibility to drive to the best of our ability, and if we can’t drive well, to stop, before someone gets hurt! I adhere to the priorities, drive quickly up to the speed limits, and try to treat professional drivers like truckers and bus drivers with courtesy.

I have driven manual transmission cars in India, the UK, Europe, and Automatic transmission cars in Canada and the U.S. I could put some thoughts into this. Without going into the details about the types of Automatic transmission, if by “easier” you mean the number of physical movements involved in engaging with the vehicle are less, driving automatic transmission vehicle is easier in most cases but not all. While driving through North American highways during summer time I prefer Automatic transmission. All I need to do is set the speed in cruise control and apply brakes when needed. In fact, the adaptive cruise control in my Subaru Forester even maintains the speed and distance for me based on the speed of the vehicle in front of me. All I need to make sure is I buy extra large coffee so I don’t fall asleep. Here’s the problem, not all time is summer time and not all days are trouble free. Not at least in the part of the world I currently live. And here is where I find Automatic is more difficult: Imagine you find the brakes don’t work and you are on high speed. (,Doesn’t happen a lot but what if it does???,) With the automatic transmission, you are at the mercy of road friction. This means you need to take your foot off the gas pedal and wait until the car comes to a stop. Paddle shifters may help to reduce the gear ratio but not a lot because the car’s computer only lets you reduce gear ratio to a certain extent based on the speed you are traveling in. With Manual transmission, you can manually move to lower gears which reduces the speed of the vehicle very quickly to within the safe limit when banging into something has less impact; the gearbox may take a blow and may need some repairs but it is still better than getting involved in a crash. Imagine you are driving in snow and ice, which happens quite a lot. With the automatic transmission, you need to use your one foot to engage brake pedal and gas pedal. You can either give power to engine or apply brakes at once and cannot do both simultaneously. With the manual transmission, you could use the left leg on the clutch pedal to engage the engine and right leg to apply brakes. If you are wondering why would someone need to do both at the same time, well, I can’t go into the physics of it but my experience says it’s super useful when the road is slippery as it creates more friction between the tires and the slippery surface. Having said all of this, having the right vehicle with the right tires during winter time is the best, regardless of the transmission system. Now, this is psychological in nature. With Automatic transmission, the vehicle decides the gear I need to be in and the amount of power that’s going from the engine. Few people prefer this because ultimately a car is used to go from A to B, so let the car do most of the work, right?. With Manual transmission, the driver decides the gear and decides the amount of power that should be used from the engine to move the car by using the clutch pedal. Personally, I find Manual transmission to be a lot more engaging and a lot more fun to drive. I also find Manual is safer than Automatic because Manual transmission demands a lot more attention from the driver than Automatic transmission and naturally, drivers paying more attention are safer. It’s probably why I got involved in an accident with my previous car which was a write-off because i was driving an automatic transmission. Having said all of these, I still have an automatic transmission because my wife cannot drive a manual transmission. When we buy our second car, I will definitely do some test drive of manual transmission cars. Hope this helps. :)

Solar thermal projects like Ivanpah are said to be more suited for India as we have plentiful of land and Sun while natural gas is as abundant as in the United States. Optical Link Electronic Engineering Professor Jelena Vuckovic of Stanford University has recently led a research in which a team of engineers designed and built a prism-like device that can split a beam of light into different colours and bend it to right angles. Described as 'Optical Link', this tiny silicon slice has a bar code like pattern etched on it. When a beam of light shines at the link, light of two different wavelengths (colours) split off at right angles forming a T-shape. Eventually, this could be a big step towards developing computer systems that use Optics (Light) rather than Electricity (Wires) to carry data. Spacecraft Radar Mappers Spacecraft Radar MappersMagellan - the Venus Radar Mapper and Cassini - the Titan Radar Mapper are some of the shining examples of Electrical Engineering marvels. Though an aging man-made satellite, Magellan spacecraft again made new when it was pulled from the elliptical orbit 5,285 miles above the Venus to just 105 miles above Venus with the help of controllers. The Cassini Titan Radar Mapper is another high-tech Imaging achievement that can fire up several Electrical Engineers for a long time to come. Synthetic Aperture Radar images of Titan's surface obtained with the help of Cassini is of great interest to planetary geological processes. But to engineers, it is the radar mapper itself which is of major interest. Magellan has two broad square solar panels, each measuring 2.5 meters across. They degraded gradually during the mission due to extreme and frequent temperature changes. The spacecraft was equipped with twin 30 amp-hour, 26-cell, nickel-cadmium batteries that got recharged whenever they received direct sunlight.Cassini is the largest and most complex interplanetary spacecraft which is unmanned (include an orbiter and a probe). It was powered by 32.7 kg plutonium-238 batteries whose radioactivity produced electricity. Its instruments included a synthetic aperture radar mapper, an infrared mapping spectrometer, a charge-coupled device imaging system, a plasma spectrometer, a magnetometer and several other sophisticated devices.

Are there car companies still making full manual transmission vehicles, and why?

In terms of the sales and consumer choice, automatic transmission is way way ahead of manual transmission cars and in fact, many auto makers including Subaru are choosing to stop making manual transmission cars for North American market. However, when it comes to which one is better, I have driven manual transmission cars in India, the UK, Europe, and Automatic transmission cars in Canada and the U.S. I could put some thoughts into this. Without going into the details about the types of Automatic transmissions, going by the number of physical movements involved in engaging with the vehicle, driving automatic transmission vehicle is easier and preferable in most cases but not all. While driving through North American highways during summer time I prefer Automatic transmission. All I need to do is set the speed in cruise control and apply brakes when needed. In fact, the adaptive cruise control in my Subaru Forester even maintains the speed and distance for me based on the speed of the vehicle in front of me. All I need to make sure is I buy extra large coffee so I don’t fall asleep. Here’s the problem, not all time is summer time and not all days are trouble free. Not at least in the part of the world I currently live. And here is where I find Automatic is more difficult: Imagine you find the brakes don’t work and you are on high speed. (,Doesn’t happen a lot but what if it does???,) With the automatic transmission, you are at the mercy of road friction. This means you need to take your foot off the gas pedal ( DO NOT PUT THE VEHICLE ON NEUTRAL) and wait until the car comes to a stop. Paddle shifters may help to reduce the gear ratio but not a lot because the car’s computer is smart to only let you reduce gear ratio to a certain extent based on the speed you are traveling in. With Manual transmission, you can manually move to lower gears which reduces the speed of the vehicle very quickly to within the safe limit when banging into something has less impact; the gearbox may take a blow and may need some repairs but it is still better than getting involved in a high speed crash. Imagine you are driving in snow and ice, which happens quite a lot. With the automatic transmission, you need to use your one foot to engage brake pedal and gas pedal. You can either give power to engine or apply brakes at once and cannot do both simultaneously. With the manual transmission, you could use the left leg on the clutch pedal to engage the engine and right leg to apply brakes. If you are wondering why would someone need to do both at the same time, well, I can’t go into the physics of it but my experience says it’s super useful when the road surface is slippery as it creates more friction between the tires and the slippery surface. Having said all of this, having the right vehicle with the right winter tires during winter time is the best, regardless of the transmission system. Now, this is psychological in nature. With Automatic transmission, the vehicle decides the gear I need to be in and the amount of power that’s going from the engine. Few people prefer this because ultimately a car is used to go from A to B, so let the car do most of the work itself, right?. With Manual transmission, the driver decides the gear and decides the amount of power that should be used from the engine to move the car by using the clutch pedal. Personally, I find Manual transmission to be a lot more engaging and a lot more fun to drive. I also find Manual is safer than Automatic because Manual transmission demands a lot more attention from the driver than Automatic transmission and naturally, drivers paying more attention are safer. It’s probably why I got involved in an accident with my previous car which was a write-off because i was driving an automatic transmission. Having said all of these, I still have an automatic transmission because my wife cannot drive a manual transmission. When we buy our second car, I will definitely do some test drive of manual transmission cars. Hope this helps. :)

Why is Tesla allowed to use their car owners and everyone else on the road around them as beta testers for their “autopilot” which obviously still has major limitations, and which is frequently being misused?

The misuse of automobiles by their owners goes back to the very beginnings of the road vehicles. It is one part of the reason that in the UK there was once the Locomotive Act of 1865 wherein a man with a red flag was to precede the vehicle on foot 60 yards ahead of the steam carriages of that day because they were a hazard to pedestrians and horse drawn conveyances. Three people were required to be in the crew of every such vehicle and thus the low speed and inconvenience led to there being very few self powered vehicles at all, with the benefit going to the railways, which had their own right of way. Here in the U.S. we tolerate a highway death rate around 30,000 or more per year for the freedom to drive our cars by ourselves. We have improved our laws against use of cell phones or texting because when those new items came into common use in cars a spike in those death rates occurred. We have other systems in use by other makers to aid lane keeping and adaptive cruise control for traffic situations nationwide, but it seems Tesla has to be to blamed here for naming their such system “Autopilot”. That system is a mere enhancement of the other systems and every Tesla owner is made aware of the fact. The car will nag the owner frequently if the hands are off the wheel for a short length of time, and take the function away if it is ignored, making its best attempt to pull the car over to the side of the road safely if no action on the part of the driver is done to respond. I have watched as my own “Autopilot” has become better and better over the 25,000 miles I have driven so far. It is working, despite questions like this one. When I was younger, there was a device sold to drivers known as a “necking knob” a swiveling knob that would be attached to the steering wheel for one handed steering while engaged in other activities in the car while driving. Supposedly tuning the radio, or perhaps holding up a set of directions or a map. Using those items, easily visible to law enforcement, were banned also. If “hands-free” telephone use can be detected by law enforcement through seeing that the hands are on the wheel and the drivers head is looking forward, so can the proper use of “Autopilot”. One thing is certain to me, “Autopilot” is a much safer driver than the types I see every time I go on a trip whose unsafe movements and speeds are fully dependent upon either good, cautious driving by other humans or its even more safe driving by the eight cameras, multiple ultrasound detectors and forward looking radar with a remarkably quick acting processor that comprise the Autopilot system.
