You can sell old, broken devices on eBay for a dollar plus shipping. Or start an auction at a penny plus shipping. Sell them as a lot, whatever will fit in a flat rate box (,Flat Rate Shipping from UPS®,, ,USPS Flat Rate Box Sizes, Prices, and How it Works,). Scrappers will take what they need and recycle the rest. If you don’t want to risk that, most vendors have a mail in recycle program, contact the vendor. If you are sending Priority mail outside the flat rate boxes, they will need precise dimensions to accurately charge for postage. If it’s a flat rate box, no problem. USPS website can answer most all your questions on mailing.
It’s the late ’60s and Volkswagen has introduced the first-generation Bosch electronic fuel injection in the type 3 (fastback & squareback) models. As the newbie in the shop I get to be the fuel injection & electrical problems guy, as the older mechanics wouldn’t touch that weird new stuff. I found it delightfully challenging, plus I was paid by the hour, not flat rate. We get a squareback in that runs lousy on dry concrete roads. Hiccups, shudders, hesitates, misses. Runs fine on asphalt or on wet concrete. It’s been to three other VW dealers already. No fixes. I ran thru the usual diagnostics and Bosch’s sophisticated (for the late ‘60s) electronic tester says everything’s just fine. But take it out on the concrete freeway and it runs awful. The brain box for the fuel injection lived up in the left rear, right above the wheel well. After several hours of increasingly desperate testing and searching I noticed the left rear tire had a nail in it. I rotated that steel-belted tire (another new innovation in the late ‘60s) to the front, and the vehicle ran perfectly. Ha! So on a dry concrete road that nail hitting the road was creating some electrical energy, which the steel belts were broadcasting and messing with the Bosch brain box. Something the Bosch engineers had never considered. Bosch immediately added electronic shielding to their brain boxes, and now they’re everywhere.
If you use Flat Rate boxes, you pay the flat rate for each of them. Flat Rate boxes are ONLY for using them at the Flat Rate. That is how the system works. If you want to bundle three other boxes and pay a lower rate, that is fine. There is a 70 pound limit. A bundle of parcels that weigh 100 pounds would be rejected.
Two quick moving hacks that might help: - USPS flat rate boxes can be great for heavy, small items. Shipping costs are by volume rather than by weight (I shipped all of my dumb bells using this method for very little cost). - USPS media rate can be extremely cheap for anything that qualifies (books, CDs, etc.)
As someone who owns a shipping store, and prices shipments all day long, I can tell you that there is no simple answer to this. Parcel shipping prices are based on three factors: Weight, size, and destination. For this question we can assume that only one destination is involved. First, let’s talk about mail. For the most part, USPS ignores size, and focuses on weight. But there’s one huge exception: Priority Mail and Priority Express Mail Flat Rate Boxes. So let’s say you have three heavy objects, but each fits in a Flat Rate Box. Three Flat Rate Boxes can very easily cost less than one big box that is going to be priced based on weight. FedEx and UPS don’t have flat rate boxes, but anything bigger than 1 cubic foot could be priced higher if it is too light. That’s called dimensional weight. In other words, when your package is big enough, there is a minimum charge. So your package might have an actual weight of 4 lbs, because of its size, the minimum charge may be for 16 lbs. So if you have three of something light, and you put them in a box where two are on the bottom, and one is on the top (with a lot of extra space around it (where a fourth item could fit), the charge based on the size could be significantly more than three small packages, especially if a large package surcharge is involved. To some extent, I can guess which will be the less expensive option by looking at the items, and holding the items to get an idea of the weight, but you might as well just enter the weights and sizes into a calculator so you can compare.
If you didn't include the destination address and/or the return address, then the package will go to the Dead Letter Department. The Post Office now uses automated sorters to read the address on the package. The tracking number is just used to track the package at each stop along the way to its destination. You can try to call the Post Office listed on the label of the collection box you deposited the package, or you can go there, and check if they still have it. Sometimes they will wait a couple days to see if someone claims the package before the send it to the Dead Letter Department.
Parcels are sorted by machine, not humans, and occasionally one falls into the wrong container and gets transported to the wrong place. It should be headed in the right direction the next day.
