Why can't diesel engines work on an Otto cycle?

Diesel engine works on diesel cycle whereas petrol engine works on Otto cycle. The main difference between both the cycles is the process of heat addition, which is constant volume in Otto cycle and constant pressure in diesel cycle. In Otto cycle the air fuel ratio is already sucked in the suction process and it is compressed in compression stroke and hence with the help of spark plug the same compressed air fuel is ignited which is why it is called constant volume heat addition ,which is not possible in case of diesel cycle where fuel is added by the fuel injector to the already compressed air and then it is combusted. Here question of constant volume heat addition doesn't rise as during ignition,fuel is being continuosly added to the cylinder where pressure is kept constant. Diesel can't ignite with the help of spark plug , compressed air is necessary for its combustion so we can't use Otto cycle.

In an engine working on ideal Otto cycle, the temperatures at the beginning and end of the compression are 50 Celsius and 373 Celsius. What is the compression ratio?

If compression ratio of an engine working on Otto cycle is increased from 5 to 7, then what will be the percentage increase in efficiency? Explain.

Thermodynamic efficiency of Otto cycle is given by expression 1–1/r^0.3, where Cp/ Cv is taken as 1.3 for mixture of combustion products of fuel air mixture and r is compression ratio. By increasing compression ratio from 5 to 7, thermodynamic efficiency would increase from 38.3% to 44.2%. To avoid auto ignition, the compression ratio is normally limited to 10.

If a 4-stroke petrol engine (working on otto cycle) can operate on CNG like we use in cars, then why don't we use CNG in bikes as secondary fuel?

This I believe is not done for a variety of reasons : 1) Safety : A car typically has a gas tank in the boot area which is protected by the metal of the car. Accidents which are very likely to happen everyday like small dashes wont affect the cylinder directly. In a bike the cylinder, if provided, would be very open and with the slightest slip or accident it might get damaged. 2) Weight : Because of the higher pressure under which CNG is filled (around 200 bar) and the safety standards the normal weight of a (10kg CNG) cylinder is 50 kg. Adding 50 kg cylinder to a normal 1000kg car is 5% weight addition but adding even a smaller 25 kg cylinder to a normal 100kg bike is 25% weight addition. This would affect handling, braking, etc in bikes. 5% weight addition in cars wont matter much. 3) Space: The dimensions of a 50kg CNG cylinder are length 835 mm and a diameter 316 mm which is too big to be fitted on a bike. Even if the smallest possible CNG cylinder is fitted the space required will be quite large. In cars, this kind of space is readily available in the boot. On bikes there is no such free space. 4) Engine power : Bikes, due to their compact nature, have engines that produce 8-10 bhp of power. Cars have engines that produce atleast 90 bhp. Now, addition of 5% kerb weight in a car wont matter much to a 90 bhp engine but addition of 25% kerb weight in a bike to a 8 bhp engine would under power the bike significantly, so it would be counterproductive.

Mean effective pressure is the ratio of work done (W) during the working stroke(s) of a cycle to the stroke volume or swept volume (Vs) of the cylinder. It is denoted by ‘pm‘ and its unit is N/m2. In order to derive an expression for mean effective pressure of Otto cycle, we have to find out an expression for work done and stroke volume of Otto cycle.
