@DoctorKarl .. I have a question. Taking renewable power stations out of the equation .. and assuming we just had coal power to use .. what would be less polluting to the environment? Cars running off combustable fuel, or electric cars that charge from coal power stations?

Coal power plant is around 40% efficient (depending on age, maintenance, and design. Then transmission loss to your charging station 4%, then battery efficiency around 90%, then efficiency of motor around 90%. System efficiency of 31%. Otto cycle engines (petrol) are 20 to 30%

8)Elec transmission lines cause power loss.  About 20 to 30%. Then to use in car, 240 volt AC conversion to battery DC is 85%, then car battery to forward motion will be 80% to 90% efficiency.

9)Propelling car by coal/N gas power plant = (Coal/gas energy) x (power plant eff [50%] + elec line eff [20%]) x (convert eff [85%]) x (battery eff [90%]) = about the same as an Otto Cycle car.  Sorry about math. Engineer.

Electrical plants are 10X more efficient than are combustion engines. Even if 100% of the electricity comes from gas, fossil fuel use per mile drops materially with an electric vehicle

Wrong. Otto cycle Is 25% efficient. Most Efficient Electric power plant is about 60% efficient. Most power plants are in mid 30s. Some much worse.but you cannot then ignore transmission losses, charging losses, battery losses, discharge/electric motor losses.
