paddle shifters for rx8 Q&A Review

What are the common mistakes while using clutch in a car?

“riding” the clutch slipping the clutch not matching the engine speed to drive shaft speed driving with the clutch disengaged The clutch should be used as quickly and as little as possible, and when it is “slipped” as little as possible, used almost like a “switch” as slipping the clutch will wear out the friction material on each face of the clutch. When depressed the clutch disconnects the engine from the gear box and the driven wheels so that the engine can go at a different speed to the wheels. This is at its most extreme when the car is stopped, depressing the clutch allows the engine to continue to turn (i.e. not stall) while the wheels are stopped. The clutch should also be depressed when changing gear so that the synchromesh can bring the engine and gear speed up or down to match the road speed. “Riding the clutch” means resting your foot on the clutch as you drive or partially depressing it so it slips when holding the car on a slope (better to engage the handbrake). “Slipping the clutch” - means letting it up slowly so the surfaces rotate against each other. This should only be necessary when starting, allowing the engine speed to keep up while the wheels are only rotating slowly. As soon as possible the clutch should be let up. If you watch race drivers start, they “drop the clutch” paradoxically letting it UP quickly, while applying a lot of revs and throttle so that the tyres slip on the road, thus allowing the engine to keep turning at maximum power even though the road speed is low. This is tricky to master, too much wheel slip and you go slower than a conventional start. “not matching engine speed” not exactly a clutch use problem but important to master. If you can match engine speed to road speed in a given gear you can shift gears faster, put less wear on the synchromesh and punch the clutch rapidly out and in, reducing wear on the clutch. If you are skilled at matching road and engine speed you can change gear without even using the clutch but it will put extra wear on the synchromesh. This is generally easier when changing up as the revs drop between gear changes. It is particularly easy on a motorbike with little weight in the gears and a sequential gearbox. To change down without using a clutch is harder and entails mastering double de clutching. In this technique you change into neutral, rev up, then engage the lower gear. To do it while breaking requires “heel and toeing” where you brake with the heel, and use the toe to press the accelerator. Normally it’s more “foot and side of foot” as you rock the foot from brake to accelerator. If you really have mastered not using the clutch you can left foot brake while the right foot is on the accelerator. As you can imagine, get this mixed up and you are in trouble. Only really for use on a race track or while rallying. Why do this at all? Well it reduces the time when there is no power going to the wheels, expensive sports cars, particularly those with paddle gear shifts, do this while a computer controls the throttle. Some advanced motorbike also have “quick shifters” which allow quick clutchless shifts. “Diving with the clutch disengaged” one of the most scary drives I ever had was as a passenger of a US academic in Upstate New York in an old Volkswagen Beetle. As he went down every hill he would push the clutch out, this meant he had no engine breaking and little control of the car. It may have saved a touch of fuel (as the engine was then idling) but is a very dangerous habit and is using up the clutch thrust bearing, which in old cars may be nothing more than a graphite ring. I have not covered more exotic machinery (Ferraris et al), large trucks who may have more than one clutch, computer controlled clutches, pre engaged gears etc. etc. that is a whole other answer…. (I ride a Triumph RS990i, raced a Westfield, drive an RX8 and a 1974 Alfetta GT)
