forester xt paddle shifter Post Review

I feel like the Mazda3 remains the sensible choice for efficient, inexpensive, somewhat fun, and actually being able to carry stuff. Backup choices being a Mini Cooper (apparently a serviceable manual) or an Impreza/Crosstrek hatchback, and doing the cvt+paddle shifters thing.

Make sure you test drive the CVT+paddle shifter setup. I’ve driven several and don’t care for how they shift at all. I opted for a base Forester with real manual over the turbo XT with CVT.

forester xt paddle shifter Q&A Review

Can I get better gas mileage in my Subaru Forester XT by using the paddle shifter instead of using standard automatic?

It depends. The automatic gearbox should be pretty good at driving economically but if you want to do better youll have to change your style of driving a little. You can shift up early for example and that will save loads of fuel. Also try to reduce braking because thats just a waste of momentum that youve created. A good trick is to hit the brakes early(?!) and slow down in situations like coming to a red light or nearing a traffic jam so you have more time before you get there and the chances of the light going green or the cars moving is much higher and you wont have to stop.
