touch up paint job meaning Q&A Review

Would you want to marry an American man if he was jobless by choice, had no healthcare and expected you to leave your country, good job and healthcare behind to live with him?

No. I wouldn't do it. But that's just me. Other people have different priorities. I know a woman who did this. Her older husband sat around all day while she worked. Then she came home and made supper, looked after their two beautiful little boys. After the boys went to bed, she did the cleaning/maintenance on the apt. building where they lived. This included vacuuming hallways, shoveling snow, cleaning, touch up painting, mowing grass on weekends, etc. She was happy enough. She left her home country for greater opportunity. She had the children she wanted, and was able to give them many more chances for success in the developed world than would ever be available to her back home. She was able to send money home to help support her family. She did this to have children and be better able to provide for them and the rest of her family. She never spoke of her husband. It appeared it was a marriage in name only, a means to an end she desired. Know your priorities. Don't expect him to be more than what he shows he is.

Is touch-up paint the most cost-effective way to fix minor scratches?

You will ,not, get a decent result by doing what you propose. Here’s why… Paint will not fill in scratches. If you see scratches now and don’t do anything now to remove them (sand/primer/sand) they will still show up albeit in the color you choose to paint; Even if you follow the instructions on the aerosol perfectly the color match may not be even close. When the factory applies the color they use specific colors of primer or undercoats under the paint. This actually changes how the completed paint job looks. You can often see this when a car has been in a crash and the body shop resprays it… careless shops don’t take the time to do the job right and it is readily apparent. If a body shop has a problem then an aerosol can will also have a problem; Aerosols are formulated to be used anyplace it is sold whether it is Alaska or Africa. This means it is a compromise ,everywhere; When repairing scratches it is a very common error to mask off the area and just paint the scratches. Body shops use a difficult but effective technique of blending which in your case may include another 12″ OR MORE around the problem. This minimizes the color match problem and in many cases (when proper care is exercised) makes the repair invisible. You cannot do this with an aerosol; Many modern colors are called basecoat/clearcoat. This means that the color (basecoat) is followed by multiple coats of clear to improve color holdout and durability. The clear (even though it is clear) also changes the base color appearance. If all these reason are things you think you can overcome, go for it but be absolutely sure that the preparation is impeccable and you allow yourself at least 3 good days to do the work.

How much will it cost to repaint, and what is the best paint for a Royal Enfield Classic 350 to Desert Storm?

I agree with all points in the response given by ,Swagat Patasahani,. I would like to answer this straight to the point without diverting to other points such as updating the vehicle papers, etc, which has already been touched up on by Swagat. If you’re repainting, don’t go in for a quick job in which the painter will mask the rest of the bike leaving the parts to be painted exposed and then paint without having to remove the parts. Have all the parts disassembled and then paint them individually, which will yield a showroom-like finish if the painter is skilled. Strip off the old paint and then go for iron oxide + primer + paint + lacquer. Here, the lacquer will yield the matte finish. There are different grades of matte lacquers available ranging from satin to rough matte. Choose right at the beginning. Insist that you want at least 2 coats of paint and 2 to 3 coats of lacquer for good longevity. Regarding the raw materials, I suggest you go in for 2K acrylic paint - Du Pont is a good brand. The raw materials would roughly cost you around Rs 4500 to 5000 for the whole motorcycle - I guess mud guards, chain guard, head casquette, air filter box, left and right toolboxes, tank. You can even paint the chassis and center stand in Desert Storm like the company does, else keep it black along with other small parts. The labor cost in India would be another Rs 3000 odd for the entire motorcycle depending on the skill and reputation of the painter. Which means you’ll have to spend roughly around Rs 9000 for the entire job, including disassembly and fitting. Edit 1 (28-Aug-2018): It’s been over 2 years I answered this A2A :) Just wanted to update the cost of raw materials in point 4 and the labour cost in point 5. Add Rs 500 to 1000 to the cost of raw materials and Rs 1500 to 2000 to the labour cost. As of today, a good paint job would roughly cost you around Rs 11,000. Rest of the points are still valid. Please stop by, read, and follow my space. Content contribution welcome!

If my car has paint protection film but still has some scratches will touch up paint even work to cover the scratches?

Paint protection film? I assume you mean “clear coat"…no…touch-up paint will look crappy…for minor scratches or blemishes just wax the car…for something heavier you can get an electric buffer…but you need to know what your doing as a buffer can burn the paint if used incorrectly. I'd say just give it a good wax job…best protection in the world for your paint.

How do you fix a poor mud job on an already painted interior wall (drywall)?

Take a straight edge and plane the walls. That means run a straight edge across and mark the spots that protrude outside the flat zone.( mark the bumps). Carefully chip out the bumps. Then I would prime the entire wall to be repaired. Allow primer to cure well. Three or four days. Then start re patching the walls. Skim coat to a smooth finish. Sand after the third coat. Then reprime the walls again. Touch up all the defects the primer exposes. prime the touch ups. Repaint walls.

What is the best auto/truck scratch remover or filler for a do-it-yourselfer with a red truck when the scratch reveals a white under-color?

The white under-color, as you describe it, is the primer or worse, the polyfill spread over the metal to give a dead-smooth surface for the paint. If you can see that, you have to apply new paint. The true test is to press down with your fingernail, with the length of the nail aligned with the length of the scratch, and run your fingernail over it. If you can feel it (the ‘bump-bump’ as the nail drops in and comes out of the scratch), that’s not something that will “buff out”. I’m a giant fan of cheating when this happens. Find a wax crayon that’s as near as possible the same color as the paint. Use it to “color” the scratch, filling it in. Very gently remove the wax from the surrounding paint. Ta-da! No one will notice it unless they’re looking for it. Apply a nice coat of wax over the top, and you’re good to go until it melts out, or washes out. If you really, really want to fix it, you’re going to want a near exact match on the paint. Duplicolor makes matchy-matchy paint for a bunch of cars; for some marques, the dealer has touch-up paint. I’d go with the dealer paint first, if available. You’ll want the liquid, not the spray. Super duper clean the area first. Use solvent - alcohol is fine. Take a very, very fine hard pointy thing (toothpick is a good first order approximation, a super sharp ice pick might be better, a strand of very fine wire more narrow than the scratch is best) and dip it in the paint, and very, very slowly and gingerly “paint the scratch”. Use magnifying lenses for this. Trust me. Don’t get any paint on the surrounding area. Trust me on that too. Apply a coat. Let it dry. Apply another, repeat until there is a ridge of paint that’s very, very slightly higher than the surrounding paint surface - you should still have a fingernail ‘bump-bump’ but from raised rather than indented effect. Now grab a piece of at least 2000 grit wet sandpaper. Affix it to something solid - wrap it around a pencil, glue to a paint mixing stick, something. Do not attempt to do this free-hand. Using micro magnifying lenses, just barely sand the ridge until it’s flat with the paint. You’ll be removing about 80 microns at a time. That’s it. Optionally use very fine polishing compound to clean up the area. Wax it, of course. Here’s where you can screw this up… your paint is covered in clear coat. The color is under about 200 microns of clear. If you “dig into” that, to make it look right, you’re going to have to re-shoot the clear coat. Which, by you having already screwed this up, you’re not qualified to do. Nearly 100% of the time, I take this to may paint shop, and let them do it. It’s like $100, maybe $150 to have done, it’s done right, and I didn’t have to sweat whether or not I was going to really screw up my paint job. Some detail shops have the ability to do this. Nearly none of them do. That doesn’t mean they won’t tell you they can, sadly. Hopefully, having a guide to how involved this is will influence you in the same direction.

How important is the colour of your car to you when you buy one? If the dealer offers you a very tempting discount if you accept an unsold showroom car with the wrong colour, would you agree?

The last seven or eight cars/trucks I’ve bought have been white. Why? Because they were the best deal. Because they happened to be white. Because they filled my needs. But I am sick of white cars. I mean… really tired of them. So I found a solution. A couple of vehicles back I bought a Jeep Cherokee, cheap, with a load of miles on it. I love Cherokees, but Jeep has stopped building the body style that works for me so I’m only finding high mileage rigs nowadays. This cheapo beater was… you guessed it… white. I went down to the local Home Depot and bought some rattle can Rustoleum. Paprika was the color described on the can, kind of a reddish dull orange. I taped off the Jeep and in about two hours I had a Paprika Jeep. When I sold it a couple of years later, I informed the guy buying it that it was a rattle can paint job and he could get touch up Paprika at Home Depot. He told me that the color and the paint job was one of the reasons he liked the Jeep. It was a selling point, to him… So I just recently purchased a rear ended Toyota Tacoma. I was thinking about selling it after fixing it, but drove it afterward and found it is a decent replacement for Jeep Cherokees. Of course the truck was white. A trip to Home Depot, and about six cans of Oregano colored paint, and I now have an army green, satin (drab) Tacoma. It turned out better than the Jeep. I like it. Of course by now we’ve added few things. I don’t know why I can’t upload a jpeg pic, but this link will show you the truck. Click on Triple D. Apocalypse Observer Next project? My wife saw how the Jeep and Tacoma turned out. She is driving a Corolla that has oxidation spreading fast on a dark blue paint job. She picked out “Modern Mint”, and is hoping the car will not be as hot in the summer sun. Fifty dollar paint jobs…

How can people disrespect the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi? Isn't it disrespect towards India?

Under the glare of the spotlight, it is called. The higher you are, the closer you become to it and the more exposed you become to scrutiny and flaws being pointed out. A healthy individual works at those flaws inside out, perhaps by drinking more water, imbibing some glow friendly but bitter products like Saafi, eating healthy, working out etc, while some may try to hide the flaws under make-up, while still others may touch up the picture afterwards in such a manner that the reality and what is percieved are entirely different animals. The point however being that a person on top gets noticed and gets talked about. Especially a person chosen by a majority and ,not ,chosen by a minority, (I am not talking religion here),. It happens in every country. In a healthy democracy, when voices speak out against what the Prime Minister (or President, as the case may be) does or doesn't do, it gets called criticism. Criticism also keeps a government on its toes. A healthy democracy has supporters who also show the mirror when things are going wrong. If a supporter thinks that his only duty towards his leader is to praise everything he does, the supporter becomes a sycophant and has no value. A healthy supporter supports right decisions and speaks out when things that happen are not right. That person adds value. Criticizing Modi does not mean that a person necessarily has an immediate alternative to him. It is a manner of showing that people watch and have contrary opinions as well and are unafraid to voice them. If the OP implies that some amongst the critics abuse, he/she may not be unjustified. It happens. There always are some bad apples and anyone who is in politics has to deal with it. No matter if they are as big as Modi or as small as Kejriwal. For instance, just yesterday (10/8/17), the outgoing Vice President (Sh. Hamid Ansari) made oblique references to minority feeling unsafe ,these days. A criticism alright but at the wrong time and place. Was it abuse? No. Was it appropriate? No. But this being a democracy gave him the right to say what he pleased and where he pleased. It similarly gave the Prime Minister the privilege to retort as he pleased which he did. So all is good. What I am saying is that ours being a democracy where the government is for the people, by the people and of the people, the Prime Minister is a person who has been chosen to serve the nation. It is impossible to please all the people all the time hence at any point of time, there will always be a faction or another that stands disgruntled. The government is not a hapless creature that does not respond to abusers. We have seen time and again, how certain people get more than a fair share of ,attention. ,That's how BJP or any government before them (and for that matter, any government after them) deals with people/parties/agencies that abuse. I would suggest that the OP learns that people in high places are expected to know that they would be subject to scrutiny and criticism - healthy or otherwise. It is upto Modiji to choose the manner to respond to the criticism. The example I quoted above has relevance here: Work inside out: make healthy lifestyle changes in the party so that the flaws reduce. Drink Saafi: Take the bitter pill and acknowledge what is wrong and work at improving Eat healthy, work out etc: Let their work speak and wait for results to show Make-up and apply paint to cover up blemishes: Make things appear as what they are not and have a gullible public lap it up. That won't last too long. Touch up the picture afterwards: We all know this - how social media touches up stuff sometimes. So, yes voices will be varied but criticism has to be taken in the right spirit. The spirit of feedback. Often healthy. The job of the Pradhan Sewak is to listen and not shut up those voices. This is India, not North Korea.

Why did the USS Fort McHenry look so rusty during an August 2019 visit to Kiel, Germany? Was its maintenance neglected or is this usual for US Navy vessels?

She’s been through 3 deployments without a long term maintenance period that allow her crews to stand down and paint. Just in the last 9 months, she’s been under 3 months quarantine for mumps and still continued her mission, been detached to the 6th fleet and then brought back to the 5th, participated in 4 (3 minor, 1 major) exercises, and participated in 3 “showing the flag” port calls. She has not spent much time in port which is probably bad news for the Marines aboard her. When her current group goes back into port in late november, she’ll have time to catch up on paint touch ups. What people don’t seem to notice is that painting at sea is extremely difficult, especially when you’re running at operational tempo. That is why it is usually done in port. The Russian ship they showed, he actually spent a lot of time in ports during their round the world cruise as well as being newer meaning that the paint is better bonded to the metal (drydock paint jobs last longer due to the process of applying) compared to older ships that haven’t been drydocked for years and spot painted during port calls.

How much would this B737 paint job cost?

The big cost of painting your aircraft with a beach scene (as shown in the question) is not the initial paint job; it's everything else... Colors on aircraft fade quickly... The aircraft fly at high altitudes and get bombarded with UV light that makes colors look faded. However, plain white paint doesn't "look faded." So the parts of an aircraft with colored paint need to be repainted more frequently. In this case, the whole plane would need to be repainted frequently. Paint chips.... The skin of the aircraft expands and contracts during a flight. This causes the paint to crack and chip off. It doesn't show much with white paint because the aircraft is white. However, it shows a lot when the aircraft is painted a non-white color. This means getting more touch ups to fix the obvious chips. You get less money when you sell... Like someone buying a house knowing they'll have to renovate, buyers pay less for painted aircraft because they know they'll have to re-paint the whole thing (because most airlines fly planes that are mostly white). The Highest Cost of All: Opportunity Cost.... There's a reason they don't close a factory to paint it; lots of potential revenue is lost. With an airline, the planes are the factory, and the planes are only making money when they're in the air. Every time you stop flying a plane to paint (or re-paint) it the airline is losing far more money than the cost of the paint job; they're losing the money they would have made by selling tickets if the plane was still flying.
