Do you regret something you did as a police officer?

Do you regret something you did as a police officer? Yes, but not in a way that most might imagine. I was raised to be scrupulously honest. This has not always served me well in work situations although my conscience has remained clear. I was working deep nights when a storm was approaching, and while checking the National Guard armory a gate that I needed to drive through and secure got pushed by a huge gust of wind. A little piece of metal wire made a scratch in the white part of the vehicle paint barely above the running board on the rear passenger side (full sized SUV). Instead of saying nothing and hoping that no one could pinpoint when it occurred or trying to cover it with touch up paint, I followed the department policy to the letter and listed it on my end of shift vehicular report. I mistakenly assumed that I might have nothing happen or might get charged the nominal cost for a bottle of touch up paint from the dealership which at that time cost less than 5 USD. Nope. I had a sad excuse for a supervisor who was known for being petty, racist and a bully. He wrote me up for discipline as if I had caused major damage doing something reckless like speeding on ice or off-road for fun. Unfortunately, those higher up the chain of command did not stand up against the obviously petty bullying, and I got a full day off without pay. It was enough money to pay for my gasoline for the month or to pay a utility bill, so it hurt. We were not bn unionized, but that incident definitely showed me the value of having a union to stand up for individual workers who are otherwise fairly powerless in at will employment. Some more senior officers from a nearby agency told me that I should have called one of them to bring me some white typing correction fluid to fill in the scratch if it was in the white paint or a black permanent marker if it was in the black paint instead of giving a known @$$hole a chance to mess me over for no good reason. They said I should have gone to the dealer and bought the touch up paint once they opened right after my shift ended because that's all those jerks who messed me over ultimately used on the vehicle anyway. It was a hard lesson in “the real world.” If this “discipline” taught me anything, it was that “fairness” is often a convenient illusion or talking point and that bullies and cowards often prevail over those who try to do the right thing. Shortly after my tiny scratch cost me more money than if I had paid to have the entire door painted at a repair shop, two white male officers caused ,major, damage to vehicles. Neither were treated as they should have been if policy was equally applied to everyone. One was near retirement and had horrible eyesight and bad habits. He hit a citizen’s vehicle in the rear. He had run a stop sign that he had been seen to run regularly while making a right hand turn only a few blocks from HQ. He was driving the same SUV that I had given a two inch, light scratch near the running board. He was ordered to have multiple unpaid days off, and he told them to piss off instead. The department had to pay out for that accident with the citizen and repair the department vehicle, and it cost the officer ,nothing, because he ,refused to accept the consequences,. They didn't dock his pay or write him up for insubordination, ,which should have happened per policy. A second young officer who was already a screw up (but connected to others with influence) disregarded direct orders during a big ice storm. Everyone was directed to ,not, patrol and to go from HQ to various protected positions spread out where we could wait safely in heated buildings with our cars close and relatively protected in case of emergency calls only. Even routine call responses were suspended due to the extreme weather hazard, but this young idiot decided that he was ,bored, and wanted to drive around the empty streets in ,subzero, weather on solid ice. He barely made it two blocks from where he was supposed to be before he hit a high curb so hard that it took the patrol car out of service with major damage. Others were placed at risk even to go to the accident location in such harsh conditions. The supervisor who had to respond to work the collision on that occasion was the same jerk who wrote me up for a scratch in the paint, so his hypocrisy was obvious when all of the idiocy was smoothed away despite thousands of dollars of damage being done. Once again, someone who exercised bad judgment placing others at risk (and in this case additionally violated a direct order) didn't get disciplined or lose any money. I was angry and disappointed. I decided after the second incident with nonsense excuses for the disparate treatment that I was ready to leave the agency and go to law school. There had already been other issues with ridiculous behavior from a few male officers, and it gets exhausting after a while being the odd person out carrying extra burdens related to race and/or gender in addition to trying to simply do one's job. I left for law school in 1991. If I was going to put up with $#!+ in every job, I would rather be paid decently for it and not sustain any additional permanent damage to my body. There are no decisions that I made with regard to my interactions with the public that I regret. I am a woman of color who started in law enforcement in the 1980s when I was a rarity. I was the first person of color (male or female) at one city to ever be on patrol, and it was a hellish experience a lot of the time for me. I was raised in a family that was keenly aware of the consequences of people being treated poorly because of ridiculous things like their color or gender, so I would never do that to someone else. I believe that people should be allowed to keep their dignity when possible even if they make mistakes and get arrested. I spoke to people even while arresting them to keep them from serious physical harm, and when force was necessary I used my professional training and good judgment based on actual conditions to make decisions (not fear or biases and stereotypes about certain groups). I never caused serious injury even to people who tried to harm me, but I took care of what was needed to keep the public safe (often despite their choices). I believe that a measure of how well I treated people even while known to be an officer with lots of activity including enforcement actions was that I frequently had people thank me for how I treated them. I can still recall the astonishment in the face of a dispatcher who once saw me doing a release from our city's holding cells of someone I had arrested hours earlier for multiple charges. The gentleman paused just before exiting to our lobby which was by dispatch. He thanked me for the way that I treated him, giving him the information he needed to get his moving violations and other legal issues handled as well as treating him “like a human.” He was an openly gay man in a place and time where being treated decently was sadly not his usual experience. He was clearly moved at being treated with basic respect, called “sir” and not roughly handled. He asked if he could give me a hug, and as my gun was still in a lock box, he had been searched by me earlier and he was no physical danger, I gave him the hug and some personal encouragement. I told him that he seemed like a nice person who had made some bad choices but that was no excuse for anyone to treat him poorly. I told him that the best way that he could thank me would be to get his life together and to not use the ugly behavior of some as an excuse to mess up his life with drugs and foolish legal problems. Not only did he fix his legal issues, but he came back to let me know that he had given up all drugs (mainly marijuana) and that he had gotten his life on a better track in general. In addition, he had contacted the city manager and chief of police to let them know about the positive things from our interaction which could have gone a very different direction. I only discovered what he had done when they called me to the city manager’s office where I was met by him, the chief and my now reformed former arrestee. It was one of those days that reminded me of why I became a police officer, to help people. The dispatcher was a white male a couple of years younger than me who hoped to be a police officer. He asked me a lot of questions about my interaction with the guy I had released including what I had done in the field, which charges were filed or not and why, etc. He asked many questions at other times following that incident as well. He was honest about me being a different type of officer from what he had observed to that point, and it appeared to intrigue him that I was quite effective and professional but so different in my approach from the norm at that time. I sometimes wonder what kind of police officer he became and if I had any influence over his path.

Can you name 100 different things that you did in the past month?

Retired 73 year old: buying: clothes food tools lights beer glue screws shampoo dinners-for-others glass window shade cut toe nails, shaved, trimmed hair, showered, cleaned toilet, picked hair from floor, made cake, cleaned the dirt on the bottom of my glass table, touched up marks with a black marker, cleaned the furnace filter, signed up with britbox and watched poirot, marple, and a few other uk classics, tried to make cookies, tried to microwave parmesan, tried to fry egg whites in rounds, dusted again and again, decided to make a voltmeter 1/2 x2 inches, designed it, created the printed circuit board, sent the docs out for making, started the software for it, went to the hair dresser, drove my car, bicycled, played tennis, played pickleball, made food for the men's cooking club at the church, moved my wine-making stuff out to the garage, drank my wine, tried to fix my printer, studied on my next laptop purchase 4k, touch 17 inch screen doesn't exist for active pens..under $5K, vacuumed the floor, spent an hour a week with personal trainer at gym, visited 2 of my 4 sons for dinner, studied how to use almond flour, found out my answers on Quora are evening out at about 600 viewings a week, bought beer from the new brewer just around the corner, bought a few more games for my Samsung VR Gear glasses, That's about 50. brushed my teeth several times to see if my tartar is lightening, poured distilled water on my glass water stall to see if it left no marks, put away my winter shoes, washed clothes, broke a glass in the microwave, charged my dyson, charged my garmin, bought a dash camera for my car, charged my car, found wonderful things in my garage while looking for an hdmi cable, bought ingredients to make bread without any electric tools, drilled holes to mount my fan in the kitchen window, stocked the bathroom with toilet paper from the closet, things are getting less interesting..now at 63. i can still do it. moved my paintings around ready for the next party, got out the paint to touch up my kitchen, filled the salt container, turned on the 'tablet' in my fridge ( I turn it off to make it last as long as the fridge, but having a party soon. ), got a bottle of wine from my stock for an Ontario championship..Cab Franc 2019 from niagara grapes, went boating on an antique boat on the St. Johns River FL for 3 days, 2x airplanes, one maple-leave lounge, one 38 dollar wine glass at the Jacksonville airport (famous variety), dipped my legs in the atlantic ocean on amelia island, gained 7 pounds in florida. Lost 4 of those after return to Toronto, I do look at the american news channels on the internet for about an hour a day. Listened to audio book about hidden life of trees on Audible, tried tryptophan and melatonin at the same time to help sleep..garmin watch says marginal improvement, plotted my sleep over the last month: garmin says non-light sleep percent is related to stress, related to alcohol and not related to how long you sleep. Will continue next month, washed my sofa blanket and overstressed the washer while I was out... the washer had stopped and it was wet when I got back. Found that outdoor pickleballs are softer than indoor ones. My garmin watch stopped indicating notifications from my cell. Still can't get outlook to show on it. Interestingly, my samsung note 8 just got updated... it is so much nicer now. put out the garbage, the recycling, picked wood off the frozen lawn, turned over the chairs under the gazebo (wind storm), got paint for outside, talked to neigbours, taking vit C since colds are becoming a problem around me, found that 4x500mg chewies make a nice drink if left overnight in a glass of water. 91 to here. I will stop now...proving your point. Ahh. answering you, thanks…92.

Which is best for coloring characters on wall, is it wax color pencil or acrylics or color markers?

According to me for painting on walls it is best to use wall paint rather than what artists use on paper, canvas and other substrates. You get acrylics also for walls in hardware stores. I have seen the use of spray cans making excellent art. Some people have successfully used car touch-up paints also for art on walls.

What kind of art should I sell? I’m 13 and can’t spend much on materials.

Sell!? You first need to LEARN. Draw every day in pencils and pens (markers, even ballpoints). And you can experiment with india ink and its various dip pens (buy a penholder and some different points to mess with). Sketch pads can be versatile for both wet and dry media. And buy a cheap beginner’s watercolor set to play around with. For touch ups also get some “bleedproof” white paint that’ll cover mistakes on all these materials without them showing through. And one small cheap but well-pointed brush to use with it (keep it clean after use so it’ll last). Thanks to the internet, it’s true that anyone – no matter how lousy or undeveloped – can call him/herself an artist and possibly sell work. But you’d be selling yourself short if you got caught up in selling and locking in on certain types of art when you should be unafraid to experiment with different styles, media and techniques. Learn to be an artist while you’re a kid, learn business later. Eventually, you can get into the various digital formats and applications, but in my opinion, learning to draw and paint develops your innate abilities for all types of artwork. It helps you become observant, intuitive and aware, develops color sense, design ability and so much more. Art is a full-time pursuit in that you should engage in constant observation of things around you. Like “oh so that’s how a calf muscle looks when someone stands on his toes,” or “cars are basically rectangles,” etc. So why distract yourself with sales when you don’t need to? Observe, play and develop first.

Can anything fix bleach stains?

I don't think so but I suppose it would depend on what accidentally got bleached. With fabric or something that you could dye, you could probably re-dye this item. You probably can't “fix” a bleach stain but maybe you could get creative and use dye, paint, magic marker, etc. to hide the stain, but as far as really “fixing” it, it's only possible if you can add the color back that the bleach removed. I accidentally dropped a small drop of hair bleach on my bathroom carpet and I just kinda half assed cleaned it up, forgetting what I was dealing with. Obviously it bleached a good sized orange spot on my Jade green carpet! I took a paint pen ( like for touching up your car paint) and colored the carpet green. It worked! It wasn't the exact color but close enough that you have to really look close to know I screwed up! I hope this helps! :)

What was your darkest moment?

You guys asked, so I will tell. I would take advantage of the anonymous option, however I feel like the past is what makes you, you. So here it goes… When I moved to Georgia (USA) I had to escape my own house fire. You can read about this here: Terrion Henderson's answer to What is the most painful thing you’ve endured? After some time we eventually, somewhat, kinda-sort’ve, were getting on our feet. But, with one issue... My father was in Tennessee, so I was being raised by my mother. At the time she was “raising” me and my 4 other brothers in the same house. I want to make this as personal as I can so I will give you a little insight of what I had to go through. My whole life: No toys, No TV, No Video games, rarely air condition, and No cellphone (or service). Whooping (Beatings) EVERYDAY. Dish in the sink? Beating. Pee on the toilet? Beating. Someone ate or drank “her” things? Beating. I genuinely believe that she enjoyed the power of beating my brothers and I. She would brag about how she hits us into submission in front of her peers. She made us take off our pants, pull down our underwear, touch our toes, then she would hit us HARD AS HELL at least 30 times, as we struggle to keep our balance. She did this even while we had our friends and company over. To do this, she taped 5 wooden paint paddles together and that is what she used (she broke the other weaker sticks on me twice). I could go days and even over a week without sitting right in school. I dare not tell anyone though. It was embarrassing and just… bleh. I couldn't bring myself to mention that Terrion, the badass of school was whooped til he could not sit. They looked like this. She even made me and my brothers whoop each other. Here is her saying, “If you don't hit hard enough, then you're going to get more licks from me”. So we were forced to hit ourselves. She hit me and my brothers in the mouth til we bled from the lip or nose (even in public). She would say, “Come here so I can pop you in the mouth”. We blindly obeyed as she back and front-handed us. I have HIVES (my skin whelps under pressure and swells up). I would look just awful… Everyday when she came home from eating out (she would leave us at home with nothing to eat), I would hear the garage door lifting below my bedroom. My heart would race (even if I was sleep I'd wake up). Before I could even see, I'd stand up (lightheaded) and rush downstairs to make sure everything was cleaned. We couldn't cook, yet she refused to give us any food to eat. Overtime, it was like a game; a game we couldn't win. When she left we had limited time to cook anything we could find, clean up the evidence, disperse the smells of food, then pretend that we never went into the kitchen. During this time, I also played this little game that I wrote about here: (It was a thrill for us) Terrion Henderson's answer to What are some weird things you did as a kid? I once even broke my arm, and conveniently my mom “lost” her paddle (whooping stick). We obviously hid it, but it only made things worse, because she told us if we did not find it, she’d hit us with whatever she can pick up (she did). Anyways once she woke me about dishes. Dishes that she told my brother to do. She Whooped me out of my sleep while I still had a broken, castless arm. She re-injured it. I wrote about it here: Terrion Henderson's answer to What’s the worst way you've been woken up? Now back to MIDDLE SCHOOL… My middle school was very preppy and valued their appearance. Meanwhile I only had 1 pair of shoes with my socks exposed. People would say that they were “Talking shoes” because the bottoms looked like a mouth opening up. I had 2 pairs of jeans and both were ripped and so tight they looked like leggings. I had 1 pair of shorts which were out of style and had marker on it. I had 5 shirts. I don't even want to go into detail of how terrible they were. Thankfully I was a very cool guy who was funny and made friends, but depression always finds a way in. NO field trips in school; I had to sit in class as I watched all of my peers go have fun. NO school dances (no suit or money). NO book fair; I pretended that I wasn't interested in the books… I starting cutting myself… My “emo” friend told me that I'd feel better after doing it. I did -I felt important. I felt like I had control over just how much damage I could do to myself. My mom said that my father wasn't sending money, she said that we were barely making rent, she made me feel bad and guilted me if I asked for clothes. It was humiliating. I remember coming home and wanting to pass out. My main goal before I did my homework or relaxed was to find out what combination of clothes I could wear the next day. I came home one day from school and went to my closet. I spent over an hour trying to find something to wear that wasn't dirty (she wouldn't let me wash clothes), or already worn too much. I fell asleep in the closet on the floor looking for clothes. I woke that morning, missed my bus (after running out to catch it), then had to walk back to my house, wake my mom to take me to school. BEATING. Then I had to wear the same clothes from the previous day. Robbing housing and selling drugs. I was making enough to buy a new shirt every other day. $6–$8 maximum. I thought long and hard… Surely my mom isn't barely making rent to the point she can't spare $6. I was buying clothes and shoes for my brothers too. The worst part is, she’d go out to eat. She would buy huge fish tanks and fill it with expensive fish. She came home with a $300+ motorcycle suit, 4–5 expensive purses, expensive shoes, phones, etc. Things were not adding up at all… I grew to resent her and would go hours without even speaking a word. In school I plummeted. My GPA now is only a 1.8 (I’m just now recovering). I used to have all A’s and won oscars for my writings. The following bullet point isn't for sensitive viewers… Contains animal cruelty. I'm sorry. Sadly, I had no outlet for my pain except cutting… and killing. Sadly I killed numerous, countless birds. When I was hurting after a long day, I'd lift my window, grab my bb. Gun, then shoot anything that breathes. If I hit it, I'd proceed to find the dropped bird, then "put it out of it's misery” -which I caused. I would wake 7am just to get the morning birds. It didn't help that my favorite show at the time was "Dexter". I felt that it was so real.. I felt very impactful and at peace. If my pets (fancy mice, hamster, snake, turtle) died (by natural causes), I would skin them, or preserve something of them. In fact I still have their remains in a tank. ,I am sorry. I have changed. My mom stopped hitting me after I snapped on her once out of stress. I yelled at her and I feared that I would hurt her. She realized that her physical abuse of me was over. I even ran away once after she was yelling and took my things (I paid for them). I ran away for days. I kept waking up at night; I swear I was on the verge of freezing (I slept outside). I am slowly getting my life back together, but my mom hasn't changed. I met my future Wife (My Nguyen) and we are going strong. She loves me, but her mother despises me, because I am black… I'm not kidding. You can read about it here: Terrion Henderson's answer to What is the meanest thing your mother in-law did to you? Depite the setbacks, my girlfriend accepts me and helps me financially as well. I still live with my mom and I make $50 a week as a personal trainer at a gym. My mom took the heater and fan out my room. She tries to get me to pay rent (I turned 17 in November). I buy everything I have and she still takes from me… She charges me for rides to work, so if I’m lucky ill have $30 or so a week. She even makes me give her money if I want to use the EBT card (food stamps). The card is meant for us to use. Months ago,my girlfriend, (who is more financially successfully than I) gave my mom $650 so she could fix a car for us. The part she bought cost $160.50. When we requested the money back, because she was taking too long, she gave us back $386. She took over $104 and still hasn't given it back. She stole from me, which is something I have never done to her. Just recently I went to call my dad to just check up on him. My phone isn't in service, so I used her FANCY BRAND NEW PHONE (She has over 3). It turns out that she has been harassing him for child support money, yet we’ve seen none of it. Here are the pictures I took of her chats (while she was not looking): I promise you guys, I can go on, and on, and on.. But to wrap it up, my darkest moment has been my whole life. I am just now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I meditate, I eat right, and I try to get my girlfriend the best I can. I just hope the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train. THANKYOU so much for reading my story. One thing great to come from this, is that I have transformed my poison into passion. I write lots of poems that touch on issues that others could relate to. This describes how I used to sleep and be in my room to escape my waking life. This one describes how stress and depression can "add up". Always look out for others. This just touches on injustice and cruelty. I HOPE I MADE THIS PERSONAL, because Quora is my family too.

Can I use rubbing compound to remove light scratches from a car, or will this damage my car?

It has been a long time, since I've used rubbing compound. I had a scatch and a 6″ blue magic marker line on the hood of my car, so I tried it. I applied it as directed and realized it was an abrasive, like Comet or Dutch cleanser. I wiped it off and used polishing compound. The paint had shifted color where I had used it. If I had it to do over, I would have used touch-up paint in a spray can and then used polishing compound.only. It always bothered me, that I didn't know, but this was years before the internet and easy answers to questions at your finger tips.

What's the best "gotcha" story of a car salesman getting caught being dishonest?

This was a "Gotcha Moment" that I earned and a very strong learning experience in my youthful days in the Auto sales industry. So we were selling 1 yr old rental returns in North Branch Mn at a combo Chevrolet Dodge Plymouth store in the late 80's. Small dealer, small community The rental returns this story was about were 14 in number Dodge Shadows and any color you wanted as long as they were white. Yep everyone was 1 model year old 36–42000 Miles Bright white and had blue interiors. So we advertised the whole lot at the same price of 5990.00 each plus tax and LIC fees. We usually didn't haggle all that much anyway but our GM made the rare decision to no haggle these specific cars. The thing was this they were listed cheaper than the larger metro dealers south of us by more than a 1000.00 dollars and the reason was this they were really beat to shit…. They ran fine but appearance wise WOW, chips in the hoods, scrapes and some dents along with stained interiors. They were kinda a mess and the reconditioning that they had was already done according to the general manager as in what you see is what you get. So the 1st customer I get calls from about an hour away asks if we are negotiable? Nope sorry all are at the same price only 10 left. Her name is Lorie and she is on her way to see us on Saturday this being Thursday. I sell a couple the other guys sell 1–2 each and come Saturday the beat up of the beat up are left. The 4 that hadnt been taken were chipped, scratched and had some ugly interiors more than the sold ones. Lorie shows up and we exchange handshakes and small talk while walking to the Fab 4. They are the only white ones in sight. Oh my she says where are the other 10 the ad says 14. We sold them I say… she says what other colors are available? Just white like the ad says I say! Well the hoods are chipped and she counts out 44 of them while I watch her roll. I'll go 5000 plus fees! Thank you I say but Sorry best price prenegotiated for you. No way she says and leaves.. So Monday rolls around and Lorie calls back and says paint the hood and I'm in! Sorry can't do it blah blah blah. Ok she says have someone touch up the hood and I'll pick it up tomorrow. Well I know the GM won't authorize it but I'll do the touch up myself how hard can it be and we agree over the phone. Delivery day is Tuesday today is Monday and no touch up paint in 11U Arctic white anywhere to be had…. Crap crap crap what to do as Tuesday rolls around?? Guess what does match? White Out! Yep the mistake fixer with the little foam applicator…for paperwork or typing mistakes. So I'm 1/2 way done with the hood on the far side of the building in the shade when Lorie found me after showing up 2 hrs early!!! She says? Wtf??? Like 3 times…..really?? fucking white out??? You cheap fucks!!! Of course she left again and I felt like a complete jack ass…lesson learned? No is No don't shortcut the process and do touch up off site!!! Oh and I've also heard that black permanent marker is a quick fix on black cars but cannot prove or verify that at this time….

What is the best way to get rid of a patch of rust on the exterior of a car?

I’m a big fan of eating it off with acid. I usually use The Works or some other cheap brand of toilet bowl cleaner. You’re looking for 5% hydrochloric acid. It’s strong enough to eat off rust and weak enough to leave good metal and paint intact. If it’s on a vertical surface I use a paper towel to cover it. I squirt it on and then wipe under it with a dry towel, the saturate a paper towel’s center and then stick it on the area. I come out in an hour or two and wash it with soap and water and do it again. Once the area is rust free, I wash it well with soapy water and rinse it and DRY it. Then I let it air dry even more. I go over it with either rust converter (available in the primer section) or I touch it up with a matching car paint marker. The marker is only for small nicks. If it’s a larger area, I try to spot it in, but usually wind up repainting the panel.
