What are some good automotive tips?

I found a great article by Readers Digest (http://www.rd.com/advice/saving-money/74-car-care-tips-to-keep-your-automobile-in-topnotch-condition/) with some really useful tips that you would not normally think of. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Don’t fill up if you see the tanker, If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs. 2. Lighten up your key chain, Does your car key share a chain with a dozen or more other keys? That’s a pretty heavy load hanging off the car key when it’s in the ignition. The weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure. To add years of service to your ignition switch, purchase a lightweight key chain that allows you to separate your ignition key from the others. Drive with only the ignition key in your ignition. If your ignition key “sticks” when you try to turn on the car, it’s a warning that your ignition switch is about to fail. Replace it before you get stranded. 3. Touch up nicks sooner rather than later , Touch-up paint won’t adhere well to rust. So be sure to keep some matching touch-up paint on hand so you can touch up any minor nicks, often found around door edges, before rust has a chance to form.

After how long, when applying touch up paint, will you be able to drive a car? Is half an hour after you've applied light touch up on some minor spots, too soon? How long a wait before drive?

It depends on how much paint has been applied. You should wait 24 hours. The humidity can also affect the paint. I'm far from a professional but rather be safe than sorry.

Will car insurance accidental damage claim for bumper be rejected in India if any minor bumper touchup was done some 4 months back?

Motor Claim Policies has basic condition that any loss/damage to the vehicle should be reported as soon as possible to the Insurer. 4 months old damages cannot be claimed now. Also as Motor Insurance is Indeminity Contract where Insurer pays you to bring back in preaccident condition claiming for pre-existing damages is not possible however any fresh damages which are timley reported would be approved. For your case Insurer should pay for Current damage and old paint touch up if needed to be painted would be borne by you. Also these things depends case to case basis so Surveyor will approve as per ratio of old vs. new damages.

What petty problems are better to live with than try to solve?

Thanks for A2A. Also, I am having a fangirl moment because Gopalkrishna sir has tagged me to answer this. I better make this the best answer on Quora ever. 😅 Alright, let's see. Here's my list. These may seem like issues but they're really not. And I've been guilty for doing all of these things, but try to no longer do so : Fixing/mothering people,. You'd be surprised how big of a job so many of us have taken this up as - we're going around correcting full-grown adults….just because! Unless you're a guru that's taken on the Herculean task of enlightening your disciples, you really must learn to accept people for who they are, and not who you want them to be. Diversity is precious, please let people be! Repairing scratches and minor dents on your car, if you drive in India,. I had my first scratch the first day I took out my new car for a drive (just because the auto driver didn't want to break at the red light). I got it touched up, and since then have had 10+ other scratches in the past 3 years. It's pointless to worry. Get a paint job once every few years, at best. Reproaching househelp. ,Whether it's vim on your plates, or a corner of dust still left, please stop wasting your and her time complaining about it every single day. This is why they quit work, nobody likes getting nagged. Bargaining with street vendors even though you know they're ripping you off., Look, if they had more money, they wouldn't be here doing this. At restaurants you're paying INR 1000 (or whatever is your currency) for one meal, off of which you could actually buy ration for several days! Mess, in general,. I am a clean freak (don't know if clinically it's OCD), but my husband is the exact opposite. But he's a lot happier and stress free than I am. And you know what? Sometimes it's okay to not be organized. It's okay to take it easy and not be a perfectionist about your surroundings or your life. Universe is constantly self correcting and there's really no such thing as good or bad, it's all relative. These are my current life lessons! I'll think of more and add to the list in the future. Love, light and awareness, V ❤️ (,My Spiritual Shenanigans,)

What was the most outrageous repair quote a mechanic has ever given you to fix your car?

I was about to go into a coffee shop with a friend when, immediately after I parked my car, I opened my door and a huge gust of wind caused it to fly out of my hand! It bashed into the car beside me (I left a note - I’m very honest!) and caused minor damage on this pretty old looking car. My brand new car sustained a small dent at the edge of my door, as well as a missing chip of paint. Right after our coffee, I went to my dealership which was practically next-door to the coffee place. I had no appointment but I drove into the garage with the hopes that somebody could do something. A man from the body shop came to look at my car immediately. He said that he would take it out of the garage so that he could see it better in natural daylight. 10 minutes later, he drove my car back into the garage where I was waiting. He told me that he had fixed my car! He touched up the drop of paint and he was able to bang out the very small dent from the inside of the door frame. It was very subtly noticeable, but only to me. No one else would have ever guessed that there was a dent there. Here’s where the outrageous part came in – I asked him what I owed him and he said “nothing”. I was in complete shock! Never in my life have I had an experience like this - and this was the garage at my dealership, no less! I was so impressed with this man’s kindness and generosity. Needless to say, I speak very highly about this garage and my dealership. It’s nice to know that there are some people out there who don’t feel the need to take you for a ride. Edit: It was suggested to me by a fellow Quoran that I mention this dealership so that I can give credit where credit is due - it is the Chevrolet garage on Sources Boulevard in the West Island of Montreal!

After you buy a brand new car is it physically impossible not to find bumps on the bumper, and scratches on it over time, caused by other people?

Before the new car is delivered to you the dealers do prepare the car for delivery and if there are any minor scratches or other defects they are all fixed by paint touch-ups and vacuum fixing of small dents etc. Many of these defects are caused in trans port of the cars to the dealers place. You can closely inspect the car before you take the delivery and you have right to not to accept the car if you are not satisfied. However, once you take the delivery of the car, you cannot go back with a complaint about any damages you notice after you took the delivery.

While you’re sitting parked in your car, a car next to you opens their door carelessly, hitting your car. What do you do?

I was driving my dad’s pick up and parked at a large store to pickup some supplies and make a quick visit to my grandmother. When I came out this woman was parked in a car next to my dad’s pickup. She wasn’t in a valid parking spot and was attempting to change a child’s diaper in the front seat. As she moved her rear would push on her drivers side car door and bang the car door into the side of my dad’s pickup. I saw this happen twice as I approached the pickup. I moved between her car and my dad’s pickup and check for ding and paint scratches. It looked like she had shoved the door into the pickup several times. I complained to her and she blew me off. I started to get in my dad’s pickup when she did it twice more. I started to get out again when I caught sight of a police car cruising the parking lot. I stepped out and motioned to him as he passed by. He circled the parked cars and pulled up behind us. He asked what the problem was and I showed him the woman still attempting to change the diaper and banging her car door into the side of the pickup. He held the door until she finished while looking at the damage to the pickup. He told her she wasn’t in a valid parking spot and that there was evident damage to my dad’s fairly new pickup. As he was about to write her a ticket she burst into tears and the baby started crying as well. This took about 10–15 minutes for her to compose herself and then explain that some of her family ran an auto body shop and could make the repairs for free. After several months of juggling my dad got his truck repaired and a satisfactory paint touch up for the car ding. I lost driving privileges for his pickup and had to find my own transportation. The pickup is now 48 years old and has just been restored by a grandson. It has had minor dings a spot light switched on and burned a hole in the seat (where it adopted the name “flame”) has been the most major event. It has only 170k miles on the odometer.

How would a person repair three very small but noticeable dents on the backside of their car without having to replace the entire piece?

Paintless dent repair companies are frequently used by new car dealerships to repair new vehicles that incur minor dings during transport. They utilize suction cups and other methods to pull dents. They also do minor paint touch up so well they you can't tell it ever happened. Try those folks

How much longer will my car last that is 13 years old and just turned 91,000 miles?

Many cars have gone well over 1 million miles. Just ask a New York cabbie. Maintnance matters, but original engineering is a big factor. The Mercedes Benz 300e of late 90s is an example of an over-engineered car. Lots of million-miler 300e cars out there. Lots of Volvos are million-milers. It depends on, (IMHO) decending order: original design criteria w.r.t. product cycles/life, oil changes, other fluids flush/replacement (cooling, brake, transmission, differential), the number of cold starts (for any given mileage, fewer is better), city vs highway driving (somewhat redundant to the cold starts issue), other maintenance (shocks/struts/bushings, etc), and your tolerance for normal cosmetic wear & tear and squeaks and rattles. I have a 2005 BMW 530i with almost twice that mileage. It’s virtually worthless as a trade in, but it’s rock solid, and it runs and handles handles great - ,everything, works, and almost zero squeaks and rattles. Other than normal maintenance, I’ve had a transmission overhaul ($1.2K at 120K mi), new shocks/struts ($0.9K at 140K mi), new suspension bushings ($0.8K, also at 140K mi.), and new front and rear window rubber seals ($0.7K at 165K mi), and those prices were all at the at the local BMW dealer (Classic BMW of Plano, Tx) that has a $120/hr shop rate for labor. I use JiffyLube to change the oil every 5–7 K miles, and it does not burn but about 1/2 a quart between oil changes. I use Chevron (with Techron) for fuel (burns clean). It’s spent half it’s life outdoors, both day and night, but the paint is holding up just fine (I keep it waxed). I did buy new front headlights to address the dulling/yellowing. And I have a detail guy touch up rock chips and minor dings about once every 2 years. Looks like new to the untrianed eye. Here’s a picture, from about 2 months ago. Perfectly respectable family car. It may out-live me, but I also have two 20-year-old BMW garage queen sports cars, that are quite well preserved. They absolutely will out live me. Maybe someone will teach my grandkids to drive a stick, in case there is any dead dinosaur residue yet to burn.

What are the tricks that used car dealers use to make a car seem like it's in better condition than it actually is?

Whether it qualifies as a “trick” depends on your viewpoint, but ,professional detailing ,can add many hundreds of dollars in perceived value. A car that seems as clean, shiny, and fresh-smelling as new is significantly more appealing to a possible buyer than one with even minor signs of recent occupancy. (Never mind that the two cars would likely be in roughly the same condition two or three weeks after purchase). Many volume dealers have full-time detailing staff so the investment is much less than a private detail job, and such crews can also go beyond standard detailing content to light reconditioning: polishing headlights to a like-new-gloss (oxidized headlights are a huge psychological indicator of “old car”), paintless dent removal and paint touch-ups, ozone treatment (for odors), headliner repair, and mag wheel brushing or painting. As a buyer it's worth remembering that before the shiny, new-appearing car reached the used car lot, it was somebody's everyday car. One of the best ways to squeeze value out of a used car purchase is to see through the rough spots on a private party sale to the underlying condition.
