She then said the whole side would need a respray. LOL what? I then took photos of all the scratches which she said was unnecessary. Oh, its necessary, I'm not paying for a spray when you could use a touch up paint pen from the auto shop for your 10 year old car.

car paint touch up spray Q&A Review

Is it possible to fix a deep car scratch?

You will be amazed at what a bit of touch up paint will do. Because it's black it will be easy, find some flat paint and brush it on. Nobody will ever see it. Want to be even lazier? Sharpie might work. Spray paint also works, but be very careful, the spray travels, it is extra work to cover everything.

What is the best automatic car wash for my car? Regular or touchless? Are the extras like undercarriage washes, wheel cleaning or spray-on wax worth it?

So I am a manager at an automatic wash, so my opinion will be slightly biased. I have a pretty deep understanding of the chemistry at both the automatic and touchless washes. Lots of people feel that the touchless washes are the way to go since the automatic ones will eventually leave swirls in your paint (which is only partly true but I’ll get to that in a moment). The only problem with the touchless washes is the chemistry. The way they clean cars is completely different. We combine Chemistry and what we call Mechanical Action (the physical brushes). Touchless washes only use Chemistry. Since they don’t have the benefit of Mechanical Action, they have to use ,significantly, harsher chemicals than we do. Over time, this will deteriorate your clear coat, stain the rims, and seemingly bleach out the hard plastic trim pieces on your car. The choice between the two also has something to do with the condition of your car when you bring it in. Is it covered in mud? Maybe go with a touchless over an automatic so it doesn't rub the grit into your paint (however, you’d be safe with a Mister automatic… One of the first chemicals to go on your car is a lubricant, and our first set of brushes are made out of what we call NeoGlide, which is basically just slippery foam. It helps push the dirt off without holding it in the cloth and rubbing it into your paint). Your traditional automatic won’t have these things, so you are going to run into issues if you continually bring your car in covered in mud. As far as the add-ons? I swear by them. And I’ll address them one by one (keep in mind that this only applies to Misters). The undercarriage wash is more of a rinse than anything else. We couldn't use a full blown pressure washer down there or we’d damage electronics, but it is useful for rinsing off road grime, salt, or mud out from under your car. Having cleaned the tunnel 100’s of times, I can tell you that that is the dirtiest section of the tunnel, just because it removes so much filth from the underside of cars that people don't even know is there. Wheel cleaning comes in all of our packages down to the basic, so I’ll address what we call Wheel Polish (only available in our Platinum, which is the top package). Basically, this is a sacrificial silicone-based polymer layer that is just meant to give your rims a slightly wet look, and it also keeps a layer between your rim and brake dust (which makes it significantly easier to clean. And since every car gets the same attention, it means that you should have immaculately clean wheels every time you come through without needing to touch up certain areas). And finally, my favorite, our wax, the area in which my company has set the standard for the industry. Recognize this? We started this. And yes, this makes a massive difference. One, it's going to shine longer, and two, it's going to give it another sacrificial layer to protect your paint and make it easier to clean next time. On sunny days, you can look down the line of freshly washed cars and see who got wax and who didn't. Its that big of a difference. Also, it makes things like bugs and road tar so much easier to clean off, since those things would be stuck to our wax and not your clear coat. I said I would get to the problem of swirls in your paint. Our washes mitigate this issue as much as we possibly can, but its part of the wear of the vehicle. Handwashing is worse for it than taking it to a Mister, since at home you probably don't have a cleaning lubricant and NeoGlide brushes to push off the grit before you clean. The issue is the vehicles that only get the wax-less washes every time. Even if you take 3 ply toilet paper and wipe your car in the same spot 1,000’s of times, you’ll start to see marks. The only way to effectively mitigate this completely is to either keep a coat of hand wax on it or to get our wax. Either way, you have to have something between your clear coat and the grit that it encounters every day. I’ll give an anecdote to illustrate: We have a regular customer named Mr. Jackson. He’s been coming 3 times a week for six years (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays). He is retired and loves to detail his truck every single time he comes in (the inside, I mean. He lets us take care of the outside). He has a black Ford F150 and gets the wash with the wax every single time he comes in. His paint is in immaculate condition. You’d be hard pressed to find any issues with it anywhere, even though he takes it to one of those “horrible automatic washes that scratch your paint” 3 days out of the week. That’s roughly in the neighborhood of 972 washes without ANY issues. I wish I had pictures of his truck to post, but I won't see him till Saturday. Anyways, I hope my answer has given you an insight into processes and chemicals behind a car wash. There’s a lot more to it than I think most people realize.

Does acetone hurt car paint?

Yes. But consider it industrial strength. I worked in a fiberglass shop years ago. It's not like your paint will dissolve instantly. Use a small amount, rub off the offending material, but wash off with water immediately. Spray on touch up wax as the paint will be raw.

What is the brutal truth about owning a Rolls Royce car?

I own a 1959 RR Silver Cloud II ,Home I guess the brutal truth is RR have always been a luxury chauffeured car. Until the 60s they were never designed for the owner driver. If you had to ask what they cost then you couldn’t afford it. RR are charming and everything is pretty much hand made. Designed for the owner passenger. No seat belts or airbags. Any maintenance tends to be expensive. Mechanics complain it’s over engineered but it never fails to turns heads. Reactions from children is always surprising. They know it’s special. It always starts. I've had a few things replaced because they just wore out after 50 years but the car tends to stay in good repair. I need to attend to the paint work and get the carburettor overhauled by ProCarb in Launceston, Tasmania. This guy is a living legend! I guess the most amazing thing I've heard is that I can get another piece of book matched timber panelling from RR if I call up and give them my Vin number SRA21. They go to the package of wood that was used to make my car and carve out another piece of veneer. I've heard of another story of 17yo Allan. He saw the Queen in her Rolls Royce in Sydney in the early 50s and was stunned by the amazing deep dark red colour of the cars. The colour is called Royal Claret and is for the sole use of the Queen. In that light bulb moment he promised himself he’d buy a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud and paint it that colour. Prior to that he’d seen the regal Rolls on black and white tv and always thought they were black. 20 years later he bought his long wheel base roller. It has a solid piece of glass housed in the front seat that goes up between the chauffeur and the backseat passengers. The RR Silver Cloud is designed to be chauffeur driven and has the dials in the middle not on the drivers side. He spoke to the Rolls specialists in Sydney who said it was not possible to paint his car Royal Claret. After a bit of convincing the RR specialist garage put in a call to RR in England who were able send out a quart of Royal Claret. The spray painters used two sheets of aluminium painting one with Royal Claret and the other with their guess and eventually were able to match it exactly. Apparently the garage had made up some story about the vice regal roller needing some touch up paint. Allan now has an award winning concourse roller. Oddly enough only white wine gets served in the back seat not Claret. The Silver Cloud III was the end of the classic era. Later models don’t quite have that charm or the curves. They were for the owner driver. Within the Rolls Royce Owners Group there is division between the pre and post war cars. The Wraiths and the Phantoms are just amazing cars and way out of my price range. As a child I remember my mother occasionally saying to me “Oh there goes a Rolls Royce!”. It was a big deal in Tasmania. So when I saw mine a RH drive version with white wall tyres advertised in a car magazine in Palm Springs, CA I bought it and shipped back to Australia.

How can I remove scratches from my car which I can feel by nail?

There are two types of scratch that you can feel by hand. The first one is a bit minor and only scratches out the final coat. For that, buy some buffing wheel and buff the scratched area and its surrounding. Level it and use colouring wax. Its available everywhere. Other colouring wax you can also use touch up spray paints. These conceal the scratch enough to be missed by wandering eyes from a foot or more. Second one is where the scratch is deep enough to penetrate the primer. Don't take risk. Re-paint the block. Thanks for tge A2A

What kind of paint should I use to paint my fretboard (neck) on my acoustic guitar? Is car paint ok?

There really is no such thing as "car paint" or "furniture paint". The paint really can't tell what it is covering. I would strongly recommend AGAINST painting your fretboard but if that is your wish and you don't have professional spray equipment then you can use any ACRYLIC LACQUER. It comes in a vast array of colors and is what most people generally think of as car paint. Be sure that the can does NOT say enamel or epoxy or (any type of)-urethane. I am pretty sure that DupliColor auto touch up paints are all lacquer but be sure to read the label. If you have a rosewood or ebony fretboard (dark red/brown or black) you will probably get very disappointing results since the wood is naturally oily and without careful preparation the finish will come off in a very short time. You will also have to be careful to remove the cured finish from the frets. The more I think of this the worse it sounds... don't paint your fretboard. Period.

What should you do about overspray when spraying touch up paint from an aerosol can onto your car?

Overspray should be a consideration BEFORE you start spraying. Any area that you DON’T want paint, you better cover up. Also keep in mind “Wind”, if you are painting in the garage or outside, the atomized spray will leave a mist on things around you if you ain’t careful. Also keep some alcohol/acetone and some cottonballs or cheesecloth to clean up if you get some overspray on metal and plastic. Keep in mind that acetone is brutal on plastic.

How bad is it for my car paint, if I applied spray touch up paint at 9pm and then by midnight, 3 hours later, it is pouring outside and the car isn't garaged, so it rained on my 3 hr old paint, will that destroy the paint, or no?

This question cannot be answered as there are other inputs required. What is the ambient temperature? What is the relative humidity? How much wind is blowing and for what percentage of the three hours did it blow and from what relative direction? What is the drying rate for the touch up paint? These other considerations must be addressed, in order to answer this question.

So I have a white Wagon R and I accidentally incurred some scratches on it could someone recommend a best home made way to fix it?

Difficult to give an exact answer without looking at a picture. If the scratches are superficial, i.e. not deep, you can use a Scratch Remover Pen to fill in the scratches. Clean and dry the area, then use the pen. Wax the area after the liquid has dried If the scratches are medium deep, get some fine Rubbing compound and rub along the scratch till the scratch almost vanishes. Rub only along the scratch, not across it. Use Scratch Remover Pen to fill in the area, then wax and buff the area If the scratches are really deep, you have to get touch-up spray paint of the shade of paint of your car. First use rubbing compound to remove the scratch as much as possible. Then spray multiple times very lightly to cover, allowing the paint to dry between passes. Use rubbing compound again to smoothen the new paint edges to the surrounding area. Finally wax and buff the area All the materials - Scratch Remover Pen, fine Rubbing Compound and touch-up paint are available at all car accessory shops.

What is the cheapest way to get an aerosol can of spray paint for auto touch up that matches your car's paint color?

Take your vehicle to one of the same manufacturer's dealers, and tell them what you want. They can match your paint better than anyone else in the world can, and they can sell you a little rattlecan or brushbottle of touchup paint. It's not very expensive, and it should outlast your car.
