The main star at Mazda’s booth at the ongoing 2024 Bangkok Motor Show (BMS) saw the return of the fan-favourite rotary engine to a production vehicle. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is the first rotary-powered Mazda model in more than a decade, giving the Wankel motor a new lease of life as well as extending the range of the Hiroshima company’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV). In a bid to accelerate its electrification efforts and catch up with rivals, Mazda is set to launch its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) model in 2027, according to CEO Masahiro Moro. Although many may recall the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version of the Mazda MX-30, it’s also available as a hybrid, leaving the Hiroshima-based carmaker without an EV-only model. Following the launch of the dedicated EV model, Mazda will be looking to boost production of EV-only models from 2028 onwards.
