Proton X70 - Is it expensive to maintain?

The Proton X70 is currently Proton’s most sophisticated model on sale right now.

We took a closer look at the maintenance costs of the Proton X70, comparing it against one of its closest rivals - the Honda CR-V.

Proton X70 costs RM 939.09 more to maintain than the Honda CR-V

Over a 5-year/100,000-km period, owners can expect to pay RM 4,897 to maintain the Proton X70, while owners of the Honda CR-V only need to fork out RM 3,958, RM 939.09 less. 

Wait, what?

Yes, the Proton X70 does cost more to upkeep, due to the 1.8-litre engine requiring 5 litres of engine oil, while the Honda CR-V only requires 4 litres.

Transmission fluid ain't cheap, but it lasts longer

Further adding to the overall maintenance cost of the X70 is its transmission fluid – owners need to fork out RM 500.96 to replace the fluid, as opposed to the RM 141.50 Honda CR-V owners need to pay for their CVT fluid.

With that said, owners of the X70 only need to replace the transmission fluid at every 60,000 km interval, while CR-V owners need to replace their CVT fluid at every 40,000 km interval.

But considering that the Proton X70 is some RM 40,000 cheaper than the Honda CR-V, the slightly higher maintenance cost can be easily overlooked.

19-inch tires won't come cheap, mind you

While the range-topping X70 Premium 2WD's 19-inch wheels may look the part, replacing these tires wont be cheap. 

Expect to pay anything between RM 585 to RM 670 for a piece of 225/55 R19 Continental UC6 SUV tire. 

As such, if you're replacing all 4 tires at one go, expect to pay between RM 2,340 to RM 2,680 for all 4 tires.

Compared to the Honda CR-V's 235/60R18 tires, it costs about RM500 to replace one tire, bringing the total to about RM 2,000 to replace all 4 tires.

These prices may not include installation, alighnment, and balancing fees, which could bump the final amount up.
