Geely Haoyue: price, how big is it? Do you want a Proton X90?

The Geely Haoyue is set to be the company's flagship 3-row SUV when it is launched in China, but could this serve as a flagship model for Proton as well?

The Geely Haoyue's dimensions compared against the Mazda CX-8 and Hyundai Santa Fe

Dimensions - Just how big is the Haoyue again?

Starting with dimensions, Geely cheekily mentioned that the Haoyue is a XXXL-sized (大大大空间) SUV. Not surprising, as it is 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,780 mm tall. The Haoyue's wheelbase is 2,815 mm.

In fact, the Haoyue is even larger in size than the Hyundai Santa Fe! The Haoyue may be shorter than the Mazda CX-8 (length-wise and wheelbase-wise), but its width and height beats the Mazda.

Make no mistake, the Haoyue is a big car

Compared to the Proton X70 (4,519 mm x 1,831 mm x 1,694 mm), the Haoyue is 316 mm longer, 69 mm wider, and 86 mm taller. The Haoyue’s wheelbase is 145 mm longer than the X70.

Go big or go home

Powertrains - Familiar options, including the 1.8L Gen 3 turbocharged unit

Dimensions aside, the Geely Haoyue is expected to feature two powertrains – the first is a carried over 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine from the smaller Binyue (Proton X50, anyone?). This engine does 177 PS and 255 Nm.

A big SUV that also looks good? Geely has quite possibly nailed it with the Haoyue

The second engine choice is a familiar one – a 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that is shared with the Proton X70. Power figures are identical as well (184 PS/300 Nm).

Design - Geely's design team is on a roll

Then there's the Haoyue's design - from the photos, Geely has incorporated its "Expanding Cosmos" front grille, flanked by a pair of sleek-looking headlights.

The Haoyue also gets SUV design elements, including a silver front skid plate, fender extension pieces, a roof rail, and a raised ride height.

Features - Extensive options for the Chinese market

Typical of recent Geely models, expect the Haoyue to be available with a long list of safety equipment - the image above mentions that the Haoyue can be had with a 360-degree view monitor, front and rear parking cameras, and Adaptive Cruise Control (as part of Geely's ADAS suite).

Pricing - Here's where it gets interesting

Geely has yet to reveal pricing of the upcoming Haoyue, but some publications have estimated that it could be priced between CNY 138,800 to CNY 198,800.

For comparison sake, the Geely Boyue is priced between CNY 88,000 to CNY 156,800, while the Jiaji is priced between CNY 98,800 to CNY 148,800.

Geely Xingyue on the left, Geely Jiaji on the right

In fact, the estimated pricing puts the Haoyue on par with the Xingyue, which is priced between CNY 135,800 to CNY 195,800.

In other words, the Haoyue will be priced around 60 percent higher than the Boyue (Proton X70). If it were to be introduced in Malaysia, expect it to be priced closer to around RM 170,000.

Geely has yet to officially launch the Haoyue in China, but given that the company has revealed preliminary details, we reckon it isn't too far off.

Will be launched in Malaysia?

The short answer is no, at least not in the near term. The next two Geely models to be introduced in Malaysia is the Binyue (Proton X50) and Jiaji (7-seater MPV positioned above the Proton Exora). While Proton has made great strides, it is doubtful if the Proton brand can sustain a product priced above RM 150,000.

Also, the market seven-seater SUVs is not very big. At that price, cheap reconditioned Toyota Alphards/Vellfire dominate.

In the meantime, check out our videos of these two upcoming Geely models.

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr

Review: BYD Dolphin in Malaysia - A solid choice for EV beginners, except for one thing

You might be aware that Malaysia prohibits the import of electric vehicles (EVs) priced below RM 100,000, and this is indeed accurate. The rationale behind this policy, driven by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), is actually sound when you consider their goal of attracting investments in the EV sector. In the world of technology, most of the valuable stuff is in the higher-end product range. Cheaper electric cars have minimal technological sophistication; they're kind of li
