The first locally-assembled (CKD) M-Performance model, the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive has just been launched in Malaysia. Priced at RM 402,355 (with SST exemption until 31-Dec, on-the-road prices without roadtax and insurance), it’ll bring the fight to the Mercedes C43 AMG.

It launches alongside the BMW 330e M Sport.

Powertrain

It’s got an ‘M’ in front, so power is there in spades: 387 PS and 500 Nm from it’s 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six. xDrive denotes that it’s an all-wheel drive model, and power is sent to the driven wheels via the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

We like big numbers because they can create fun times very quickly: 4.4 seconds is all it needs to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. Pin the accelerator and it’ll send you to an electronically-limited 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.7 litres/100 km.

Handling

Although its AWD, it is rear-wheel biased. Couple that with the M Sport differential and slidey times are guaranteed. Connecting you to the road are adaptive M sport suspension that can be electronically-adjusted.

German car pictured, wheel and brake caliper designs are same on the Malaysian-spec car.

Behind the meaty 19-inch Style 792 M wheels are the a set of M sport brakes, featuring four-pot fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating calipers behind clamping big brake discs. Runflat tyres are standard.

Meanwhile, it’s got variable sport steering that’s been modified that BMW says will give ‘noticeably more direct feedback’.

Exterior features

The M340i xDrive gets the M Aerodynamics Package, an M spoiler and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim elements along with BMW Laser Light. Additionally, the left and right inlets on the front bumper, kidney grille and its surround and side mirror covers are finished in Cerium Grey.

Behind the bi-coloured wheels are blue brake calipers and round the back the car gets trapezoidal dual-exhaust tailpipe finishers.

Four colours are available: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Portimao Blue and Sunset Orange (pictured here).

Interior features

The same sporty appeal carries over inside, as the interior also gets M-specific design touches. Standard fittings include sports front seats finished in Vernasca leather, an M leather steering wheel, illuminated front door sills and BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite.

There’s also M-specific pedals and floor mats to go with the Aluminium Tetragon interior trim finish (with Pearl Chrome highlights) to give you just that extra pizzazz over a regular 3-series. There’s also a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

Speaking of pizzazz, there’s 11 different arrangements for the ambient lighting. Other neat touches include automatic three-zone air-conditioning, 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system and contactless tailgate opening.

Other standard features include Head Up Display, electric glass roof and welcome lights.

Safety features

Other than the Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant systems, it’ll also come with healthy advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features:

  • Lane Change Warning (LCW)

  • Lane Departure Warning with steering assist (LDW)

  • Rear Cross Traffic Warning (RCTA)

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with braking intervention (AEB)

  • Rear collision warning (RCW)

  • Speed limit assist
