For starters, Proton will offer the X50 with two powertrain options.

The first is a 1.5-litre multi-port injection (MPI) turbocharged three-cylinder (not four-cylinder as reported earlier, sorry) petrol engine that does 150 PS and 226 Nm, while the second is a slightly more sophisticated 1.5-litre direct-injection (TGDI) turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that does 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 255 Nm from 1,500 rpm to 4,000 rpm.

The turbocharged MPI engine is a new development and is not available in China's Geely Binyue.

Both engines are mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) automatic transmission.

Unlike the Proton X70 that was initally imported (CBU) from China, the Proton X50 skips that phase and is locally-assembled (CKD) in Proton's Tanjung Malim plant.

Proton is offering six colours on the X50, namely Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Ocean Blue, Citric Orange, and Passion Red.

The X50 1.5T Standard can only be had with Snow White, Armour Silver, and Ocean Blue, while the 1.5T Executive adds Jet Grey and Citric Orange to that list.

Only the X50 1.5T Premium and 1.5 TGDI Flagship variants can be had with all colours. The latter also features a dual-tone finish.

When can customers book the Proton X50?
