Well this is it. Proton has officially teased the imminent arrival of the 2020 Proton X50 in their latest Merdeka video.
The teaser basically confirms what we already know about the Proton X50, including the LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, and quad mufflers. The quick shot of the new round Proton logo also confirms that the X50 will also receive red highlights on the front grille.
Furthermore, the side profile of the Proton X50 is practically identical to the China-market Geely Binyue, down to the 18-inch alloy wheels. The Proton X50 also gets a shade of blue.
To recap, the Proton X50 is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated Proton models to date, as it is set to challenge the popular Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3, but at a much lower price point.
Expect the Malaysian-market Proton X50 to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that does 177 PS and 255 Nm, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Considering that Proton has finally acknowledged the X50, we reckon that the model could be introduced as soon as October.
That said, the Proton X50 and upcoming Perodua D55L are not direct competitors, but will inevitably be priced close enough and are likely to end up chasing more or less the same group of buyers. Both are B-segment SUVs. The Perodua D55L is a B-lower segment SUV and is slightly larger than a Perodua Myvi, while the Proton X50 will be a more sophisticated, B-upper segment product.
