Front 3/4 view of the 2021 Nissan X-Trail by Kolesa.ru.

It looks like the all-new Nissan X-Trail is highly likely to soldier on with its predecessor's 2.5-litre QR25DE powerplant, albeit with improved horsepower, torque and with better fuel efficiency, based on a leaked internal corporate document.

It looks like the current 2.5-litre engine will carry on, albeit improved.

The technical documentation states the 2.5-litre unit will see an increase of 10 PS and 12 Nm of torque. However, figures may vary from market to market, depending on state of tune, local fuel quality and emissions control regulations.. Our current Malaysian spec 2.5-litre X-Trail produces 171 PS and 233 Nm of torque. With the revision on place, it should produce 181 PS and 245 Nm of torque. The Xtronic CVT transmission will be carried over as well.

The new 2.5-litre PR25DD engine.

But whether the powerplant choice is firm or not remains to be seen, as last year Nissan released a new 2.5-litre PR25DD naturally-aspirated direct-injection engine, with 188 PS and 244 Nm on tap. The new powerplant features e-VTC and EGR swirling exhaust system for improved efficiency.

The HR12DE e-Power hybrid engine. Note the compact battery design.

As reported before, a new e-Power hybrid powerplant in collaboration with Mitsubishi is in the works, and it won't be similar to the upcoming Nissan Kicks e-Power powerplant as larger SUVs like the X-Trail require a larger battery to produce more energy and power.
