Though the 5-seater Kia Sonet made its world debut in India last year, its larger 7-seater variant (a 5+2 to be more precise), the 2021 Kia Sonet 7 was unveiled to the world in Indonesia.
That makes sense since 7-seater MPVs and SUVs are still wildly popular in the archipelago. The Sonet 7 is fully imported (CBU) from India, just like the regular Sonet.

The Sonet 7 maintains the hip design of its 5-seater sibling and that also includes its dimensions. Kia has only added a couple of seats in the third row which are more suitable for kids.

According to data picked up by our Indonesian colleagues at AutoFun, even the wheelbase is maintained, measuring at 2,500 mm.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine Gamma II SmartStream (115 PS/144 Nm) similar to the 5-seater Sonet. This unit is paired to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT gearbox with 8 virtual gears.

Apart from the extra third-row seats, the Sonet 7 also comes with an overhead air-conditioning blower which provides cool air to the rear seat passengers.

The Sonet 7 also comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on the highest variant. The rest of the line-up only comes with a standard 8-inch unit seen in the regular Sonet.

Interestingly enough, the Sonet 7 also comes with a Qibla Direction feature which displays the qibla (or kiblat in BM) on the infotainment screen.

On the safety front, the Sonet 7 comes with up to 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, and a rear-view camera. However, ADAS is notably absent just like in the 5-seater version of the SUV.

The Kia Sonet 7 is available with five variants and starts from IDR 199.5 million. Since it is merely a 5-seater Sonet with a couple of extra seats in the back, is this a genius in packaging and design or just a marketing tactic to sell more Sonets in Indonesia?
