Merely two years after it was unveiled, MG Thailand decided to give its sole pick-up model a facelift. In a market where the pick-up truck is literally king, it probably makes sense for the MG Extender to be given a facelift in such a short timeframe to boost interest.
The MG Extender saw poor sales ever since it was introduced in 2019. Up until last year, MG sold around 5,800 units of the Extender – a large contrast to the six figures its major competitors have in the past two years.
Hence this major change. Compared to the pre-facelift Extender – which is based on the Maxus T60 that is sold here in Malaysia, the look is a major step-up in terms of intimidating rivals.
Though we have covered the facelifted Extender’s launch previously, prices weren’t announced yet. However, MG Thailand has just announced the prices for the revised pick-up at the 2021 Bangkok International Motor Show.
The powertrain under the hood of the Extender facelift remains the same – a 2.0-litre turbocharged common rail diesel engine with a maximum power output of 161 PS and 375 Nm. This engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission.
There are eight variants across three body styles available for the facelifted Extender and prices for the pick-up truck range from THB 559,000 to THB 1.039 million, a THB 10,000 bump from the pre-facelift model.
However, the prices still undercut the Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux which start from THB 605,000 and THB 707,000 respectively. Will the enhanced look convince Thai buyers to go for something out of the ordinary?
