Japan to get Civic Hatchback e:HEV Hybrid in July
Second market after Europe to get the hatchback design
Malaysia will stick to the sedan version instead
As part of Honda’s global ambitions to electrify their entire line-up, the brand-new 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV Hybrid is gradually finding its way across the globe.
The electrified Civic made its debut simultaneously as a sedan in Thailand and as a hatchback in Europe a month ago.
Next destination for the electrified Civic will be Japan, in which it will be sold exclusively in the hatchback form. It will go on sale in July and prices will be announced then.
Like its Thai and European counterpart, the Civic Hatchback e:HEV Hybrid for Japan gets a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine that is paired to two electric motors. While Honda has yet to release output figures of its new Civic Hatchback Hybrid for Japan, its European combined system output are 184 PS and 315 Nm.
Power is routed to the front wheels via an eCVT. Despite having CVT in the name, it’s not even a CVT in a conventional sense as all recent Honda i-MMD models don’t need regular gearboxes. Drive transferred directly from the electric traction motor (most of the time).
Standard equipment on the Japanese Civic Hatchback e:HEV Hybrid (that’s quite a mouthful) include Honda Sensing, LED active cornering lights, Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Drive mode switch (Normal, Sport, Econ, Individual), Honda Connect infotainment system, 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-speaker Bose sound system with Active Noise Control.
Colour options for Japan include Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl, Premium Crystal Red Metallic, and Premium Crystal Blue Metallic.
Closer to home, previous Honda Malaysia CEO Madoka Chujo said, “Honda Malaysia is planning to expand our hybrid line-up and and Civic on the list for future hybrid development. The details will be shared once it’s available.”
She made that comment back in January, a whole two months before the global debut of the Civic e:HEV Hybrid so she couldn’t share more details. Following the global debut of model, it’s obvious that the electrified Civic will be a follow-up model after the e:HEV RS versions of the City and City Hatchback.
For Malaysia, our electrified Civic will almost certainly be the sedan version, instead of Europe and Japan's hatchback. Expect our Malaysian Civic Hybrid to feature a similar powertrain as Thailand's Civic Hybrid.
The Civic Hybrid will most likely be launched in Malaysia only in the final quarter of 2022.
