As production for the Indonesian-assembled Hyundai Creta and Ioniq 5 begins, the Korean H brand is getting ready to introduce what might be its most important model to attract Indo buyers. Teasers for the 2022 Hyundai Stargazer have officially been released though it’s only the exterior for now.
Even though we only see glimpses of Hyundai’s answer to the Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Avanza/Veloz, and the next-gen Perodua Alza, it seems that the Koreans are decidedly going for a futuristic look, similar to its bigger brother, the Staria.
In front, the Stargazer sports a very distinctive horizontal daytime running light (DRL) bar just like the Staria. According to the press release, the horizontal DRL represents Indonesia’s location on the Equator and we can’t argue with that claim, of course.
Ditto the side profile but Hyundai has given the Stargazer a sleeker shape with the rear D-pillar sporting a very slim cutaway between the rear windshield and the third-row window. Just like its B-segment rivals, the Stargazer would utilize traditional doors instead of sliding ones.
Moving to the rear and the Stargazer continues the futuristic element with a distinctive H-shaped rear lamps reminding road users that this is a Honda Hyundai. The press release adds another reference to Indonesia here, stating that the symmetrical design represents the balance and harmony uniting Indonesia to the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
As mentioned earlier, interior shots haven’t been revealed officially online yet though if you wanted glimpses of it, there is a digital display at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport which teases the 7-seater’s interior which features third-row seats that fold flat, an SOS button, and a pair of individual captain seats in the middle.
No engine details are mentioned yet but it is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated unit that drives the front wheels to keep it up with its fellow rivals. Looking at the powertrains, perhaps it’s the Smartstream G1.5 MPi (115 PS/144 Nm) that is also used on the Creta and the Kia Carens.
The Stargazer would be an important model for Hyundai in Indonesia as the country is very much crazy for 7-seaters. Still, it would be introduced in other developing markets with Malaysia rumoured to be one of them.
