Subaru has unveiled more photos of its first-ever electric vehicle on its American and Japanese website and suffice to say, the 2022 Subaru Solterra could be the chunkiest electric SUV on sale.
The Solterra is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru and this will be the second Toyobaru twin after the Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ. Unlike the sports cars, this is more catered to the environmentalists but it still retains some of that familiar Subaru elements.
Although Subaru has yet to unveil the full design, we can see that the overall shape resembles that of the Toyota bZ4X that made its debut at 2021 Auto Shanghai. The front is still being hidden in the images but perhaps it might resemble the Subaru Evoltis Concept from 2020.
Built on the e-Subaru Global Platform, the Solterra along with the Toyota bZ4X will be the first in a series of electric vehicles jointly developed by both carmakers.
The Solterra promises to be the best of both worlds – a combination of Toyota’s famed electrification technology and Subaru’s steering and handling know-how might create an enthusiast-driven electric SUV.
Besides being developed for various kinds of EVs, Subaru also claims that the Solterra’s platform allowed for ample interior space for occupants as well as cargo space (slams roof). Speaking of the interior, it looks like the Soleterra will be using a conventional steering wheel and not a yoke that was shown in the bZ4X Concept.
The name Solterra itself is a combination of the Latin words for “Sun” and “Earth” and it’s quite fitting for the brand. On one hand, the Solterra represents a new future for Subaru while it retains an all-wheel-drive (AWD) set-up that the Star of Pleiades is famous for.
Subaru has yet to release what powers its first fully-electric vehicle but it will be launched in a few markets including the United States, Japan, Canada, Europe, and China by the middle of 2022. Will Malaysia be one of these markets in the future?
