Be quick, as the Toyota GT86 will be strictly limited – production for Europe is limited to just two years. After which, ever-tightening emission regulations will render sports cars like the GR86 not viable to be sold there. It’s the same reason why the Nissan Z will be skipping Europe.

Compared to the predecessor model, the new-generation Toyota GR86 gets a larger naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre 4-cylinder boxer engine. Thanks to the extra 400-cc in engine capacity, power is up 35 PS and 45 Nm, bringing the total output to 235 PS and 250 Nm.

As with any sports car worth its salt, the Toyota GR86 is rear-wheel drive. Power is routed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.
For those in the UK, standard equipment on the 2022 Toyota GR86 include adaptive LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, Ultrasuede and leather seats, 7-inch colour multi-info display, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Opt for the automatic variant and it adds a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic High Beam (AHB), and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).
Seven colours are offered on the UK-spec Toyota GR86, and that includes Pearl White, Ignition Red, Electric Blue, Sapphire Blue Pearl, Ice Silver, Magnetite Grey, and Crystal Black.
What about Malaysia?
According to a press release by UMW Toyota Motor, "Toyota and Gazoo Racing will be introducing several GR and GR-Sport models soon, and will be paired with the organizing of GR driving clinics, experiences and activities for the respective owners to equip them with the necessary experience and skills to be able to safely take full advantage of their vehicle’s potential."
Therefore, it’s safe to assume that the Toyota GR86 will be UMW Toyota Motor’s next GR model launch, which could take place some time next year.
The Toyota GR86’s twin model, the 2022 Subaru BRZ, is also earmarked for a Malaysian launch later this year. Prices for the BRZ start from RM 229,245 for the 6-speed manual variant, to RM 239,245 for the one with the 6-speed auto 'box. Traditionally the Toyota has always been pricier here, and following rough calculations based on last-gen prices, expect the GR86 to be circa RM 260k to RM 272k.
