Though the all-new front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2022 Toyota Avanza could likely be only offered in Malaysia as the more upmarket Veloz, some of our neighbours are offering both the Avanza and Veloz. Joining Indonesia and Vietnam is the Philippines as Toyota Motor Philippines has posted a teaser over the weekend.

The all-new Avanza was introduced in the Philippines last month (March 2022) with four variants offered priced from PHP 813,000 to PHP 1,039,000 (~RM 66k – RM 84k). Two engines are offered for the Filipino Avanza – the 1.3-litre 1NR-VE (98 PS/122 Nm) and the 1.5-litre 2NR-VE (106 PS/138 Nm).

The smaller unit takes up the bulk of variants offered for the Filipino Avanza with 3 variants and buyers have a choice of a 5-speed manual transmission or a D-CVT automatic transmission. The bigger 1.5-litre engine is only paired to the D-CVT.

With that being said, the PH Veloz could likely stand apart further from the Avanza. It could mirror the Indo-spec Veloz which is available with the 1.5-litre unit and paired to the D-CVT as well as offering better features.

The PH-spec Avanza doesn’t come with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite even on the top 1.5 G variant and according to some Filipino automotive media, TSS could be offered on the Veloz.

The G variant is also the only Avanza in the Philippines that comes with blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), and 6 airbags. The rest comes with only 2 airbags, remaining a budget family transport vehicle.

Still, the TSS on the Veloz that’s offered in Indonesia and Thailand is basic which includes:

  • Pre-collision System
  • Front Departure Alert
  • Lane Departure Assist
  • Automatic High Beam
  • Pedal Misoperation Control

Speaking of Indonesia, the Veloz could be imported from the archipelago much like the Avanza. As discovered by intrepid Indo automotive sleuth, Indra Fathan, a few units were spotted on a car transporter in the country. Besides, Filipino automotive publication, Visor has also spotted a Veloz at a Toyota dealer mere weeks after the Avanza’s launch.

Goodbye Avanza?

Despite the double Toyota introduction in the Philippines, we might not see the Avanza in Malaysia and just like Thailand, only the Veloz could be offered. However, the FWD 7-seater will not just be offered as a Toyota as it shares the same DNGA platform with the replacement to the ageing Perodua Alza.

Could the next-gen/replacement Alza feature a similar design to the Daihatsu Xenia?

Codenamed D27A, the next-gen Perodua FWD 7-seater might drop the Alza name completely. That said, for 13 years, it has completely outlived its original Japanese donor so perhaps retirement is due.
