Now it its 6th year of production, the current-generation XV70 Toyota Camry is a little long in the tooth. Moreover, the Camry’s fiercest rival, the Honda Accord, was given a new generation model in late-2022.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the development project is codenamed 380D and the upcoming D-segment sedan will be a Major Minor Change, or MMC in short. MMC in Toyota’s terms mean that the XV80 Camry will be an extensively updated model, not a full model change (FMC).
As such, the XV80 Camry will still be underpinned by the TNGA-K platform as the outgoing model, though dimensions have yet to be revealed.
Carryover platform aside, the XV80 Camry is set to be the first-ever Camry to receive a forced-induction engine in the form of the turbocharged 2.4-litre T24A-FTS unit from the Lexus NX. In the Lexus NX, this engine is good for 279 PS and 430 Nm.
Electrified powertrains are also expected to find their way into the XV80 Camry.
Like the outgoing XV70-generation Camry, the upcoming XV80-generation model is expected to make its global debut in North America – the Camry’s most important market. A March 2024 global debut is on the cards, with sales expected to start slightly afterwards. Other markets are expected to receive the XV80 Camry in the following months.
Closer to home, our XV70 Camry is imported (CBU) from Thailand and is priced from RM 219,800.
