Proton’s 2020 sales reached 109,716 cars, 8.8 percent up, still behind Perodua 01

Proton announced today that it ended 2020 with a total sales of 109,716 cars sold. Despite losing over two months’ worth of sales due to MCO, sales were up 8.8 percent from 2019.

However, Proton’s total sales tally is still behind Perodua's 220,154 cars. Proton says its market share also increased by 4.4 percent, reaching 21.1 percent.

“We are grateful to have achieved this level of performance against the backdrop of 2020. To describe it as challenging would be an understatement but we persevered. Our results were backed by many factors, trust from our customers, support from the government, commitment from vendors, resilience of our dealers and also the diligence of our staff”, said Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton.

The Proton Saga is still Proton’s top selling model, accounting for over 40 percent of the company’s total sales, followed by the Proton Persona, contributing 22 percent.

Higher range models like the Proton X70 and Proton X50 contributed about 25 percent of Proton’s total sales.

Proton 2020 total sales
Saga 46,527 units
Persona 23,917 units
X70 21,944 units
Iriz 7,636 units
Exora 5,849 units
X50 3,787 units
Others* 56 units
Total 109,716 units

*Note: Proton did not disclose what these other models are. Presumably, it meant models no longer offered for sale to consumers, but are part of outstanding deliveries to government fleet
