Following Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) axing the Mk5 Polo from its local line-up, the title of oldest model goes to its sedan twin, the Volkswagen Vento. Now, it appears that the time for the Vento is also up in Malaysia.

A quick check on the Volkswagen website shows that the Vento has been removed from the local line-up. The model was one of the most affordable Volkswagen cars in Malaysia with prices starting from RM 84,449 for the Comfortline variant.

It first arrived here as the Polo Sedan in 2012 before a facelift replaced it with the Vento nameplate in 2016.

Unlike the Polo, the answer to what will replace the Vento might be a bit too early to tell for now. In Latin American markets, the Vento is replaced by the Virtus which is a sedan Mk6 Polo. The Virtus is powered by a 1.0-litre TSI, a 1.5-litre TSI, or a 1.6-litre MSI, depending on the market.

Like the Golf, Tiguan, and the Mk6 Polo, the Virtus is built on Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform. The Virtus measures in at 4,482 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,651 mm. The latter puts it slightly longer than the Honda City which has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm.

So far there have been no right-hand drive markets that sell the Virtus. Perhaps a clue might lie in India as the initial batches of both the Mk5 Polo and Polo Sedan were imported from the sub-continent.

Just like the Mk6 Polo, VPCM has yet to confirm whether the Virtus will be launched in Malaysia or what will eventually replace the Vento. There’s a high possibility that the Vento replacement will be launched after the Mk8 Golf (which includes a locally-assembled GTI) sometime in 2021 or 2022.
