If you’ve been feeling like traffic jams have been a bit bad lately, it’s not just you, as they are now 23,822,322 vehicles that are active on the roads.

Another 12,540,664 of them are either inactive, or being used without a valid road tax. Together, these brings the total number of vehicles in Malaysia to 36,362,986 as of October this year, outnumbering the 32 million people in the country.

Meanwhile, the total number of vehicles consist of 84,745 taxis, 64,021 buses and 30,318 rental cars, while 736,410 other vehicles did not fit in either categories.

These figures were shared by Transport Minister Anthony Loke in a Dewan Rakyat proceeding on 6-December 2023.

In a related matter, Loke said that his ministry is carrying out several initiatives to encourage public transportation use, as well as widening the rail network in the Klang Valley in a few years.

He also mentioned that the ministry is actively engaging in strategic collaborations with local authorities and various stakeholders to promote and enhance the utilisation of micromobility vehicles.
