There are many ways to coax young'uns into buying cars, one of which - or so Toyota's Thailand operations think - is by dousing a Toyota Yaris Ativ (Vios for Malaysians) in pink and calling it the 'Play' variant, which is exactly what we have here today. 

Colour me fancy

Call it what you want, but it's hard to ignore, this. This Play variant is said to have been developed to 'meet the daily use of the new generation', and as such features a ton of funky visual updates.

On the outside, the Ice Pink Metallic colour is brand new, and so are the set of dual-tone (brushed alloy with Dark Mulberry inserts) 15-inch wheels. 

Other than that, the Play variant gets a gloss black upper front grille and bootlid spoiler.

More freshness inside

Exclusive to the Play variant are dual-tone, black and-white leather seats decorated with Dark Mulberry stitching. 

But the Mulberry-ness doesn't stop there - take a peek at the centre console surrounds, which are also finished in the dark purple shade.

Beyond that, the air-conditioning system now features a PM 2.5 filter, the same type of medical-grade filter used by hospitals and in haze-filtering masks, which should prove useful to keep occupants in the...pink of health.

Other than that, the Play variant benefits from the 'Play Connect Car Telematics' system, which is essentially our Toyota Vehicle Telematics System (VTS), just in a new skin. 

Enough to catch the City?

Beyond these visual changes, the Yaris Ativ remains mechanically unchanged - it's still powered by a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder mill making 98 PS and 109 Nm, paired to a CVT.

It's smaller than the 1.5-litre mill in the Malaysian-spec Vios because it has to comply with Thai's Eco Car regulations for lower taxes.

Last year, the GN-series Honda City was the best-selling B-segment sedan in the Land of Smiles. Whether or not this limited-run, 1,500-units-only Play variant can help turn these figures around for 2021 is something we'll have to wait and see.
