The 2020 Proton X70 CKD is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Proton claims the X70 CKD returns 7.6-litre/100 km, so we put it to the test.
All tyres were inflated according to the manufacturer's recommended tyre pressure of 230 kPa (cold tyres) for all four tyres. Then the Proton X70’s 60-litre fuel tank was brimmed.
Driving behaviour was as per a normal driver, accelerating and braking whenever necessary but speed was capped at 110 km/h. Air conditioning was set at 22 degrees in automatic mode. The car was in Normal Mode and only the driver is in the car throughout the test.
At the end of the test, we covered 67.7 km with a journey breakdown of roughly 60% city 40% highway driving. It required 7.2 litres of fuel to be brimmed once again.
This gives us a calculated fuel consumption figure of 10.6-litre/100 km. The trip computer displayed an average fuel economy of 8.7-litre/100 km.
We noticed that spending prolonged time in slow-moving and stop-go traffic, the fuel consumption deteriorates significantly which is typical of a turbocharged engine. If you intend to spend most of your driving in slow city traffic, expect the fuel consumption to rise significantly as evidenced here.
If you're gentle on the throttle and the majority of your route consists of highway driving, then you might be able to achieve closer to Proton's 7.6-litre/100 km claim.
